EUECONOMICOUTLOOK

Followingaperiodofprolongedstagnation,theEUeconomyreturnedtogrowthin2024.AsprojectedintheEuropeanCommission’s2024SpringForecast,theexpansioncontinuedatasubduedyetsteadypace,supportedbyeasinginflationarypressures.Despitethelingering

uncertainty,theconditionsforamoderateaccelerationofdomesticdemandin2025appearinplace.

Againstthisbackground,theEuropeanCommissionanticipatesrealGDPgrowthin2024at0.9%intheEU,a0.1percentagepointdownwardrevisionfromtheSpringForecast.

Furthermore,growthintheEUisexpectedtoaccelerateto1.5%in2025,asconsumptioncontinuestoimproveandinvestmentissettorebound.By2026,economicactivityis

predictedtoexpandfurtherby1.8%,supportedbycontinueddemandgrowth.

Meanwhile,thedisinflationarytrajectorythatstartedinlate2022continues.HeadlineinflationintheEUisexpectedtofallto2.6%in2024,easingfurtherto2.4%in2025,andreaching

thetwo-percentinflationtargetby2026.Inaddition,theunemploymentrateisprojectedtodecline,reaching5.9%intheEUin2025,downfrom6.1%in2024.

Global

In2024,globalcarsalesreached74.6millionunits,markinga2.5%increasecomparedto

2023.Althoughsupplychainchallengescontinuedtoease,regionaltrendsdifferedwidely,withsomemarketsexperiencingstronggrowthandothersfacingdeclines.

Europe'scarmarketgrewby3.9%in2024,withtotalsalesreaching16.1millionunits.

However,growthwithintheEUitselfwasmuchmoresubdued,withnewcarregistrationsrisingonly0.8%toaround10.6millionunits.ThemarketintheUnitedKingdom

demonstratedresilience,achievinga2.6%increaseinnewcarsales.Incontrast,EFTAcountriesexperiencedadeclineof4.6%.

Followingrobustgrowthin2023,bothRussiaandUkrainecontinuedtheirrecoveries,withRussiasurgingby46.4%andUkrainereboundingstronglywitha12.6%increase.

Concurrently,Türkiyeconsolidateditsupwardtrajectory,growingby1.3%.

Despiteincreasedeconomicandpoliticaluncertainty,carsalesinNorthAmericaremainedresilientin2024,withtheregionrecordinga3.8%growth.TheUnitedStates,thelargest

marketintheregion,recordeda3.1%increase,reachingatotalof12.7millionunits.A

notablesurgeinthelastquarterwasdrivenbythenewadministration'spledgetoremovefederalincentivesforelectricvehicles.

PassengercarsalesintheSouthAmericanregionsurpassed3millionunitsin2024,with

totalcarsalesincreasingby6.5%.Despiterisinginflationinthefinalmonthsoftheyear,

Brazil,theregion’slargestmarket,recordeda12.5%increase,reaching1.9millionunits.

However,salesinotherimportantmarkets,suchasArgentinaandChile,declinedlastyear.

InAsia,Japanesecarsalesdeclinedby7%in2024,impactedbythephasedreductionofgovernmentsubsidiesandthepersistenteffectsofaweakdomesticcurrency.Moreover,SouthKoreasawa5.1%declineaspoliticaluncertaintyandinflationconcernsweakeneddomesticdemand.

Withastrongrecoveryinthefinalquarterof2024,Chinesecarsalesreachednearly23

millionunits,markinga2.6%year-over-yearincrease,largelybenefitingfromgovernmenttaxincentives.Notably,Chinaaccountedforapproximately31%ofglobalcarsales.

In2024,Indianpassengercarsalesgrewby4.8%,reaching4.4millionunits.Themarketbenefitedfromaresurgenceindemand,substantialdiscounts,andanexceptionalfestiveseasonsalesboostlaterintheyear.

In2024,newcarregistrationsroseslightly,increasingby0.8%toaround10.6millionunits.Spaincontinuedtoshowresiliencewithasolid7.1%growthrate.Onthecontrary,declineswereobservedinFrance(-3.2%),Germany(-1%),andItaly(0.5%).

Despitetheoverallgrowth,acomparisonwithpre-pandemicvolumeshighlightshowfar

registrationshavedropped,withregistrationscurrentlystandingat18.4%lessthanthepre-pandemicvolumeof13millionunitsregisteredin2019.

Asregardssalesbypowersource,battery-electriccarsremainedthethirdmostpopular

choiceforbuyersin2024.Theirmarketsharestoodat13.6%forthefullyear,again

surpassingdiesel,whichdeclinedto11.9%.Petrolcarsretainedtheirleadat33.3%,whilehybrid-electriccarsstrengthenedtheirsecondposition,commandinga30.9%marketshare.

PRODUCTION

Global

In2024,globalcarmanufacturingtotalled75.5millionunits,aslight0.5%declinefromthe

previousyear.Amongthemainregions,Europe,NorthAmerica,andJapanexperiencedthemostconsiderabledownturns.

Europeancarproductiondeclinedby4.6%in2024to14.4millionunits,reflectingasupply-demandrealignmentafterabacklog-drivensurgein2023.EU’scarproductionfellby6.2%,asindustryconfidenceremainednotablyweakerthaninotherEuropeanmanufacturing

sectors.However,carproductioninRussiacontinueditsrecovery,showinganearly45%growthin2024.

InNorthAmerica,productiondecreasedby3.2%,resultingin11.4millioncarsproducedlastyear.TheUnitedStatesshowedasimilartrend,withaslightlymorepronounceddeclineof3.5%,resultinginalmost7.4millioncarsbuilt.

In2024,SouthAmericancarproductionroseby1.7%comparedto2023,drivenbyBrazil,whichsawa6.3%increase,producingaround1.9millioncars.ThisgrowthcontrastswithsignificantdeclinesinArgentina(-19%)andColombia(-41%).

CarproductioninAsiacontinueditsupwardtrajectoryin2024,growingby1.5%tonearly46millioncars.ThisgrowthwasprimarilydrivenbyChina,whichsawarobust5.2%increase,

furthersolidifyingitspositionastheworld’slargestcarproducerwitha35.4%marketshare-1.9percentagepointshigherthan2023.Indiaalsocontributedtothepositivetrend,witha

4.7%riseinitscarproduction.Ontheotherhand,productioninJapanandSouthKoreadeclinedby8.6%and1.2%,respectively.

In2024,carproductionintheMiddleEastandAfricaregionincreasedbyamodest0.4%.TheweakperformancewasprimarilydrivenbyIran,whichaccountsforoverhalfofthe

region'sproduction,experiencinga5.6%declineduetosluggishdomesticdemandandenergydisruptionslaterintheyear.Conversely,carproductioninMoroccocontinuedtoexpand,increasingby12%in2024andreaching0.5millionunits.

In2024,EUcarproductiondeclinedby6.2%,reaching11.4millionunits.Thecurrentdropisaresultofsupplyanddemandrealignment,followingaphaseofcatch-updrivenbysales

backlogsandinventoryreplenishment.

ThemostsignificantdeclinesinWesternEuropewereobservedinItaly,whichsawa43.4%dropinproduction,followedbyBelgium(-31.2%),France(-12.4%),andSweden(-5.1%).

Germany,theEU'slargestproducer,experiencedamodest0.4%declineincarproduction.Conversely,Spainsawa0.7%increase,furtherconsolidatingitspositionasthesecond

largestcarmanufacturerintheregion.

Meanwhile,CentralandEasternEuropecontinuetoplayasignificantrole,withCzechia

recordinga3.5%increaseinproduction.Bycontrast,significantdeclineswererecordedinSlovakia(-7.6%)andRomania(-6.5%).

In2024,theEUwitnessedanotablecontractioninboththeimportvalueandvolumeofcars,withvaluesdecliningby8.8%andvolumesby5.2%.Thisdownturnstemmedfroma

decelerationinproductionanddeterioratingconsumerconfidence,factorsthatalso

contributedtoa7.3%decreaseinexportvalueanda6.6%reductioninexportvolume.

Despitetheseheadwinds,theEUmaintainedatradesurplusexceeding€81billion,althoughthisrepresenteda5.9%declinecomparedto2023.

In2024,ChinamaintaineditspositionastheprimarysourceofnewEUcarimportsintermsofvalue.Despiteexperiencinga12.2%decline,Chinastillclaimeda17.2%marketshare.

ImportsfromtheUnitedKingdom,Japan,andTürkiyecloselytrailedbehind,contributing

togetherwithChinatonearly60%ofthevalueofnewEUcarimportsfromoutsidethebloc.TradeflowsfromTürkiyeandJapantotheEUsawsignificantgrowth,risingby13.8%and6.4%,respectively.Incontrast,newcarsfromtheUnitedKingdomexperiencedanotable

double-digitdecline,whileSouthKorearecordedthesteepestdropat22%.

EUimportvolumesshowedamixedoutlookamongitstopfivetradingpartners.Türkiyeledwithastrong3.7%growth,followedbyJapan(+3.7%)andChina(+0.5%).However,

Moroccoexperiencedasharpdeclineof14.8%,whileSouthKoreasawanevenmorepronounceddropof18.3%.

In2024,theexportvalueofEU-madecarstotheUnitedStatesfellby4.6%.Thesteepest

declinewasinChina,witha25.5%drop,likelyduetorisingcompetitionfromdomestic

vehiclemanufacturers.ExportstoSwitzerlandandTürkiyealsodroppedby9.9%and7.6%,respectively.Ontheotherhand,exportstotheUnitedKingdomgrewby2%,indicating

sustaineddemandforEU-madecars.

Despitethemixedpicture,theUnitedStatesandtheUnitedKingdomcollectivelyaccountfornearlyhalfoftheEU'snewcarexportsinvalue,underscoringtheirimportanceaskey

marketsfortheEUautoindustry.

Intermsofexportvolumes,therehasbeenabroaddeclineacrosstheEU’stopdestinations.ShipmentstoChinadroppedby24.2%,followedbySwitzerland(-11.9%),theUnitedStates(-6.2%),andTürkiye(-5%).TheUnitedKingdomexperiencedalesspronounceddeclineof2.2%,yetthesemarketsremaincriticalfortheEU’sautomotivesector.

In2024,NorthAmericaledwitha1.7%increaseinsalescomparedto2023,reaching4millionunitsandrepresentinga30%marketshare.Incontrast,Europesawagrowthof5.7%,totalling2.5millionunitsandcapturingan18%marketshare.GreaterChina

experiencedadeclineof5.9%,withsalesdroppingtonearly3millionunits,yetmaintainingasubstantial22%marketshare.

Thetrucksegmentfollowed,withGreaterChinaholdingastablemarketat1millionunits,aslightincreaseof0.9%,commandinga34%marketshare.NorthAmericaandEuropesawdeclinesintrucksales,decreasingby1.9%and7%,respectively.SouthAsiaexperiencedanotabledropof7.8%,whileSouthAmericasawan8.1%increase.

Inthebussegment,GreaterChinaledwitha29%increaseinsalesto120,997units,

capturinga31%marketshare.SouthAsiasawa14.5%riseto96,949units,whileEuropeexperienceda7.3%growthto60,625.NorthAmericafaceda4%declineto55,322units.

Bycontrast,newEUtruckregistrationsdeclined6.3%in2024,totalling327,896units.Amongthefourmajormarkets,Germany(-6.9%),France(-2.9%),andItaly(-0.7%)

experienceddeclines,whileSpainrecordedanotable12%increase.

NewEUbussalesrose9.2%in2024comparedto2023,totalling35,579units.Italyrecordedanoteworthydouble-digitgrowthof26.7%,Spainsawa10.3%increase,andFrancegrew

In2024,globalvanproductiondeclinedby4.6%.Europeanoutputdeclinedby5.3%,largelyduetoa5.9%decreaseintheEUanda9.4%fallinTürkiye.NorthAmerica,however,sawa3.9%increase,ledbya4.2%gainintheUnitedStates.SouthAmericaexperienceda2%

rise,boostedbyBrazil’sstrong15.1%growth.InAsia,productionfellby9.3%,withChina

(6.8%),Japan(-5.4%),Thailand(-23.1%),andIndia(-1.5%)allcontributingtothedownturn.Furthermore,theMiddleEastandAfricaregionrecordedan18.4%decrease,primarilyduetoa14.7%declineinSouthAfrica’sproductionforthistypeofvehicle.
