Thetheoldmanandtheseaisabriefbutmeaningfulstory.Afterfishingnothingduringthepast84days,theoldfishermanSanDiegofinallycapturedasalmon,whichweightisover1500pounds.Afteratoughstruggle,exactly,threedays’standoff,theoldmaneventuallykilledthebigfishthatcametosurfacebecauseofbeingexhausted.However,onthewaytoharbor,theoldmanwasattackedbymanysharkswhotrackedafterthesmellofthedeadsalmon,whathestillholdwasonlytheboneofthebigfishwhenhearrivedatport.
Itissaidthattheauthor,ErnestHemingwaywhoisagreatAmericanwriterwrotethenovelinonlyeightweeks,basingononeofhisfriend’strueexperience.Hecreatedthefigureoftheoldmanwhichwaslatercalledbypeople“toughman”andshowedhislifeattitudeandspiritualworld.Themostwell-knownsentenceofthisnovelandalsothetopicofitisthat:“manisnotmadefordefeat.Amancanbedestroyedbutnotdefeated.”Thesewordsbecomebeliefofmanyreaders.
Inmyopinion,thewholestoryisaboutabattlebetweenanoldmanandthesea,bothofwhichareconsideredtoha一vesymbolicmeaningsaccordingtocritics.Theoldmanoncewassoenergeticandstrongbutcouldn’tgetharvestfromthesea.Heusedhisoldbodyandstrongmindtofightagainstnatureandchallengehisfate.Hedidwinabit—hegotthelargefish,buthelosttotallybecausehecarriedbackonlytheskeletonofthefishwithhishandsbleeding.Ontheotherhand,hehaddoneallhecouldtofightagainstallunluckythingsanddidn’tlosehisface.Hebeha一vedlikearealman,atoughman.
