RequirementsfromISO9001/IATF16949andcustomerserveasthebaselineforSamsung’sQMS.Samsung’sQMSimplementsthePlan-Do-Check-Action(PDCA)cycleintothesystemtoprovidesufficientresourcesfortheprocessandimprovetheoverallperformancecontinually.

QualityAudits

Therearethreetypesofauditprogram:third-partyaudit(byInternationalstandardcertificationbody),second-partyaudit(bycustomeraudit)andinternalaudit.

SamsunghasobtainedinternationalstandardQMScertificationssuchasISO9001/IATF16949andwemaintainthisthroughannualauditfromanaccreditedcertificationbody.Customerauditsareconductedatplannedintervalsandanycustomer’srequests.

InternalauditsareperformedonaregularbasistoensurecomplianceofQMSrequirementsbyusingchecklistwhichencompassesallkeyprocesses.Incaseanynonconformityisfound,relevantdepartmentquicklyinvestigatesandanalyzesthepotentialcause(s),takescorrectiveactionsandestablishespreventivemeasures.Thesemultipleapproachestoqualityauditsenableustoprevent,detect,andtakecontainmentactionsforimportantqualityissuesproperlyintimelymannerandimprovecustomersatisfactioncontinually.

OneoftheobjectivesofSamsung’sQMSistoestablishandmaintainadocumentedqualitysystemwhichisdefinedtoensurethattheproductsandprocessesconformtoitsspecificrequirementsandmeetISO9001/IATF16949requirements.

Allemployeesarecommittedtotheconceptof“NOSPECNOWORK”(wedon’tworkwithoutstandards)andperformallapplicablequalityimprovementactivitiescontinually.Samsung’squalitydocumentationsystemiscomprisedofadocumentstructurehierarchyasshowninthefigure2-3.

QualityManualisthemostsignificantdocumentthatdefinesSamsung’sQMS.Itrepresentsmajorcontentssuchasqualitypolicy,qualitygoals,andorganizationalrolesandresponsibilities.TheobjectiveoftheQualityManualistospecifytherequirementsforSamsung’sQMSinordertosatisfytheISO9001/IATF16949,statutoryandregulatoryrequirementsaswellascustomer’sneeds;andtoensurethatallemployeesinvolveintheimplementationofthequalitypolicy.

Increasingcomplexityofproductdesignandperformancedemandstranslateintokeychallengestoproductdevelopmentandcertification.Samsunghasbeenconstantlyimprovedtestcapabilityandcapacityindevelopmentphasetomeetthesechallenges.Samsungassuresproduct’squalityandreliabilityperformancewithstructuredqualificationandvalidation

processthroughouttheproductlifecycle.TheSamsung’sProductLifeCycle(PLC)isdefinedinfourphasesasshowninFigure3-1.

Productsaredevelopedtosatisfyitsrequirements.Performance,reliabilityandmass-producibilityforproductsareverifiedatthisstep.

Product’slaunchisdecidedafterproductvalidationandmanufacturabilityevaluationofmassproduction.Thisstagerangesfrommassproductiontoproductdiscontinuancethathavecompleteditslifecycle.

SoftwareQuality(ThispartonlydescribessoftwarequalitymanagementprocessesofMemorybusiness)

SoftwareQualityManagement

Recently,softwareisusedinvariousfields(mobile,PC/server,automobile,drone,etc.),andsoftwaredevelopmentwithfeaturesandperformancethatcustomerscansatisfywithinalimitedperiodoftimeisrequired.Whilesoftwarerequirementsaregettingmorecomplicated,smallerrorsinsoftwarecausefatalproblems,sotheimportanceofsoftwarequalityisgettingbigger.Therefore,Samsunghascontinuouslymadevariouseffortstoachievethebestsoftwarequalityindevelopmentandmaintenanceprocess.Inaddition,Samsungpursueshighproductcompletionbyapplyingdevelopmentprocessbasedoninternationalsoftwarequalitystandard

suchasISO/IEC25000(SQuaRE:SystemsandsoftwareQualityRequirementsandEvaluation)

SoftwareDevelopmentLifeCycle

SamsungfollowsthedevelopmentprocessasshowninFigure3-3todevelopandvalidatesoftwarethatsatisfiescustomerrequirements.Samsungassuressoftwarequalitythrougheffortstodefineandfollowprocedurestoimprovequalityateachdevelopmentstagethroughoutsoftwaredevelopmentlifecycle.

MaterialsandOutsourcingQualitySystem

Tobesuccessfulinsatisfyingbusinessexpectation,Samsungselectsanddevelopsreliablesuppliers/subcontractors(hereinafterreferredtoas”suppliers”).Eachsupplier’sperformanceiscontinuouslyassessedperiodically(typicallyonceayear)conductedin-depthauditintermsof

technology,quality,delivery,cost,andfinance.Suppliersarenotifiedoftheevaluationresultsandtheirimprovementactivitiesaredrivensystematically.

MaterialsQualityControl

Samsungensuresmaterialswithstablequalityandsupplycapabilitybyfollowingthecertificationprocedure.Theprocedureisdesignedtovalidateproductconformity,supplyriskassessmentandproductioncapabilitythroughsupplierself-checklistandmanufacturingsiteaudit.

Prevention:Samsungoperatesseveralpreventivemeasuresagainstanymaterial-relatedqualityissues.TheMaterialChangeControlBoard(MCCB)controlsandevaluatesanychangesinsuppliers.TheFailureModeandEffectAnalysis(FMEA)canbeusedasatooltodefinepotentialcausesofqualityissuesandtodesigneffectivecounterplansinadvance.Atthispoint,Samsungperformsauditsoneachsupplier’squalitymanagementsystemandmanufacturingprocesses,includingbutnotlimitedtoSupplyChainManagement(SCM)capacity,procurement,andstoragemanagement.

Detection:Todetectandtakecontrolofexcursions,Samsungusesdetectiontoolssuchasthematerialinspectionbasedonthestatisticalprocesscontrolandtheadvancedmetrology

system.Suppliersshouldcomplywiththeprocesscontrolactionsinanyexcursions,and,ifnecessary,Samsungoffersconsultingand/ortrainingprogramthatsupportstheirtechnologydevelopmentandutilization.

Reaction:Suppliersareresponsibleforperformingcorrectiveactionsfollowingmaterial-relatedissues.SamsungrunstheMaterialReviewBoard(MRB)toidentifytherootcausesofthedetectedissuesandimplementscorrectiveactionstopreventreoccurrenceofthesameissue.

OutsourcingQualityControl

Samsungfollowstheprocedureofsubcontractorqualificationwheneverpackage,equipment,processormaterialsarenewlyaddedand/orchanged.Thesubcontractors’conformitytomassproductionprocessisvalidatedbytechnicalreviewsandevaluations.

NonconformityProductHandling(Subcontractor’sduty):Thisprocedureisdesignedfortakingcorrectiveactionsforthelotswithbelow-standard-yieldduetothedevice’scharacteristicsissues.TestsareconductedatOnyangPlantafterthesubcontractor’ssemi-finishedproductsareassembled.Product’scharacteristicsthatmayaffectthereliabilityandqualityduetothedetecteddefectsareevaluated.

SubcontractorRating&Ranking(S.R.R)(ThissystemaimstoconductaperiodicandobjectiveevaluationofallactivitiesofsubcontractorsinrelationtothequalitytoensureanefficientandsystematiccontrolofSamsung’ssubcontractors,therebyimprovingthequalitylevelofsubcontractors.

ManufacturingQualitySystems

Samsung’scommitmenttoqualityenablesustosustainworld-classcompetitivenessinthesemiconductorindustry.Allemployeestaketheresponsibilitiestoimproveproductqualityandsharebestpracticesacrossfactories.Inaddition,fullyautomatedproductionfacilitiesandhighlyspecializedcontinuousmonitoringsystemallowustoensureconsistentproductqualityand

reliability.

FactoryOverview(ThispartcoversallDeviceSolutionbusinessincludingmemory,S.LSIandFoundry)

SamsungSemiconductorhasfourmanufacturingsitesinKoreaaswellassitesintheUnitedStatesofAmericaandChina.Amongthem,theGiheung/Hwaseong/Onyang/CheonanandPyeongtaekcampusesarethemainsemiconductorfabricationsites.

Samsungiscommittedtominimizingtheenvironmentalimpactsofouroperationsandproductsthroughouttheirlifecycle.SamsungElectronics'investmentinenvironmentalimpactreductionhasbeenalong-standingcommitment.OurGlobalEnvironment,HealthandSafety(EHS)CenterandGlobalCustomerService(CS)Center,underthedirectleadershipoftheCEO,activelymanageEHSissuesandtheenvironmentalimpactsofproducts,respectively.Moreover,weoperateourGlobalEnvironment,HealthandSafety(G-EHS)systemtomanagetheEHSstatusandperformancesofallworksites.OurglobalmanufacturingfacilitiesarecertifiedbytheISO14001(environmentalmanagementsystem),ISO45001(occupationalhealth&safetymanagementsystem),andISO50001(energymanagementsystem).Wealsotakeaproactiveapproachtoenvironmentalandsocialimpactissueswithourinternalandexternalstakeholders.

ProcessChangeManagement

Therearemanychangesinproductsandtheproductionprocessesforavarietyofreasonsincludingenhancingperformanceofproducts,addingmanufacturingcapacity,andchangingsuppliers.Changesinproductandprocessareinevitableandnecessaryforimprovements,and,withoutproperevaluationandverification,itmayleadtounexpectedfailures.

TheProcessChangeControlBoard(PCCB)isatoolforcontrollingprocesschangesinSamsungfactoriesincludingmaterialsandfacilities.ThePCCBrequiresclearimplementationand

verificationplanstopreventtheriskandverifythebenefitsfollowingthechanges.PCCB’s

objectivesaretoa)ensureaneffectivemanagementofprocesschanges,b)leadprocessimprovementandproductenhancementsandc)maximizetheaccumulatedtechnologies.

Onceachangerequesthasbeenmade,thePCCBreviewandcreateanapplicationplanswithlimitedschedulethatcanminimizetheimpactonmanufacturingprocess.AfterImplementationofsuchchange,theresultsareverified.ThePCCBtracksanyin-lineparametersthatmayaffecttheproduct’sperformanceandfinishedproductsparameterssuchasyieldandreliability.FinalapprovalisgrantedonlywhenallmembersofthePCCBreachamutualagreement.

Astechnologyofsemiconductoradvances,thesizeoftheproductdecreaseswhilethecomplexityincreases.

Samsung’smonitoringsystemhasbeencontinuouslyevolvedtodetectabnormalities,maintainquality,andreducevariabilityofkeyparameters.

Process&ProductionMonitoring

Samsung’smonitoringprogramdetectsanyunpredictableandsubtlevariations.Itallowsengineerstoidentifyproblemsearlyandpreventexcursions.

InterlockSystem:Throughoutthemanufacturingprocess,criticalparametersaremonitoredandtrackedbyinterlocksystems.Thecriticalparametersmayincludemachineinput(EquipmentControl)/output(FaultDetectionControl)andprocessinput(Recipe)/output(CD,thickness,etc.).Inwaferfabricationprocess,athree-stageprotectionsystemisoperatedasshowninFigure5-3.

StatisticalProcessControl(SPC)andAdvancedProcessControl(APC):SPCsystemallowstodetectabnormalitiesinprocessandtotakecorrectiveactionsbeforethequalityfailures.

SamsunghashighlyadvancedSPCprogramwhichissuitableforsemiconductormanufacturingtechnologies.Itincludessmall-changedetectionwhichiscalledEWMA(ExponentiallyWeightedMovingAverage).AlsoAPCsystemperformsreal-time,and

controlsequipment’sinputsautomaticallybyrun-to-runvariation.

ContinualImprovement

Manufacturingengineerscontinuallyfocusonvariationreductionandprocessimprovement.Webelievethateliminatingsourcesofvariationmayleadtoproductenhancements.

FABEquivalency-"CopyIntelligently”:TheSamsungEquivalenceTestcheckstheequivalencyatalllevelsofphysicalinputsandoutputs.Itisderivedfrom"Copy

Intelligently"activities.TheSamsungEquivalenceTestenablesconsistencyofproduct’sperformancebetweendifferentmanufacturingsites,lines,and(or)equipment.

Samsung’sequivalencymethodologiesareappliedtofacility,materials,processinput/outputcriteria,andproductperformancecriteria.Bothcentraltendencyandvariationsoftheparametersarestatisticallymatched.Itispossibletocontroldeviationofprocessandpre-checkthestabilityofprocessforanychangesinSamsungfactories.

StatisticalPostProcessing:Statisticalcomparisonsofwafertestdatatofinalproduct’squalityallownotonlytooptimizetestconditionbutalsotopredictproductperformance.

Withadvancedstatisticalmethods,wafersand(or)dieswithpotentialriskscanbeeffectivelyscreened.

FMEA(FailureModeandEffectsAnalysis):TheFailureModeandEffectAnalysis(FMEA)isamethodologyforidentifyingpotentialfailuremodes,determiningtheirrisksanddefiningpreventiveactionsintheproductdesignandthemanufacturingprocess.BasedonFMEA,manufacturingprocessandcontrolfactorsaredividedintosmallunits,andallpossiblefailuremodesareclearlydefinedandlistedbyeachitem.Theeffectontheproductperformanceandtherootcauseofeachfailurearealsoidentified.Then,correctiveandpreventiveactionsareimplemented.

Controlofmonitoring/measurementequipment

Samsungcontinuouslyendeavorstoguaranteereliablemonitoringandmeasurementresultsbyminimizingvariationcausedbymeasurementequipment.

TheMeasurementSystemAnalysis(MSA)isperformedtoquantifytheuncertaintyofthemeasurementsystem(componentelementsincludingthemeasurementenvironmentandsampleaswellasmechanicaldevices)statisticallyanalyzingmeasuringmethodsandpeople.Thisisforstabilityandintegrityofmeasurementsofprocessparametersintermsofproductcharacteristicsfromboththeshortandlong-termperspectives.

ControlofNonconformingProduct

Samsungidentifiesandcontrolsnonconformingproducts,whichdonotconformtothespecificationandcriteria.Allnonconformingproductsareidentifiedandsegregatedfromnormal

TheAbnormalLotsProcessingSystem(ALPS)andQualityManagement(QM)systemareusedtomanagethenonconformingproducts.

ProductIdentificationandTraceability

Productisidentifiedandtrackedfromrawmaterialsthroughallmanufacturingprocesstoshipmenttocustomers.Theuniqueidentifierisassignedtoeachmaterial,equipmentandproductandmanagedbytheCodeInformationSystem(CIS)accordingtotheoperationofmastercode.Processinformation(productcode,lotnumber,manufacturinghistory,etc.)issystematicallymanagedbyidentificationprocess,Sothatnonconformingproductsareimmediatelyisolatedandscrapped.

Productscanbetrackedwhenanyabnormalityisdiscoveredoruponcustomer’sspecific

requests.Samsung’straceabilityenablesustoidentifythesourceofanynonconformities,anddetermineproductswhichmightbeaffected.

CustomerSupport

Samsunghasacomprehensivesetofcustomerqualitysupportsystemthatencompassestechnicalsupport,qualityissueresolution,returnmanagementsandqualitycooperation.

6.1.CustomerQualitySupportNetwork

Samsunghasestablishedaworldwidenetworkinordertoprovidespeedycustomersupportforinquiriesandqualityissuescoveringbothconsumer(B2C)productsandbusiness(B2B)products.Inthecaseofthebusinessproducts,wehaveassignedqualityexperts(failureanalysisengineer,qualityengineer)inSamsung’slocalsiteforin-depthcustomersupportofqualityissues.Inthecaseoftheconsumerproducts,specializedconsultation/servicecentersworkfortroubleshootingofqualityissuesthatareraisedfromcustomers.

ForB2Bproducts,theworldwideregionalheadquartersarespecifiedat

/semiconductor/support/global-network/.
