"Madagascar"alsobenefitsfromnothavinganyheavymoraltoimpartorlifelessontoteach.Itsimplywantsyoutocrackasmile,andwiththeexpertvoicesofBenStiller,ChrisRock,DavidSchwimmerandJadaPinkettSmithithasnotroublemanagingthat.

Insomeways"Madagascar"isaspiritualdescendantofanotherkindofanimatedcartoon,clayanimationwizardNickPark's1990Oscar-winning"CreatureComforts,"whichhadzooanimalstalkingfeelinglyabouttheirlotinlife.Thisfilmalsobeginsinazoo,albeitonedistinctlyoutoftheordinary.

ThatwouldbeNewYork'sCentralParkestablishment,whichthefilmconceivesasakindofluxuryspathatcaterstoitsinhabitants'everywhim,fromheatlampsandblowdryerstogourmetmeals.Afteryearsofthiskindofpampering,it'snotsurprisingtheanimalshavelostwhateversurvivalskillstheyoncehad.
