Interestinwindpowerwasrebornduringtheenergycrisesofthe1970s.
ResearchbytheU.S.DepartmentofEnergy(DOE)inthe1970sfocusedon
largeturbinedesigns.Whilethese2-and3-MWmachinesprovedmostly
unsuccessfulatthetime,theydidprovidebasicresearchonbladedesignand
engineeringprinciples.Intheearly1990s,improvementsintechnology
resultinginincreasedturbinereliabilityandlowercostsofproduction
providedanotherboostforwinddevelopment.
Inotherpartsoftheworld,particularlyinEurope,windhashadmore
consistent,long-termsupport.Asaresult,Europeancountriesarecurrently
capableofmeetingmoreoftheirelectricitydemandsthroughwindpower.
Denmark,forexample,alreadymeetsabout20percentofitselectricity
demandfromwindpower.Windgenerationalsoaccountsforaboutsix
percentofthenationalpowerneedsinSpain,andfivepercentinGermany.
Seriouscommitmentstoreducingglobalwarmingemissions,local
development,andthedeterminationtoavoidfuelimportshavebeenthe
primarydriversofwindpowerdevelopmentinEurope.
TheWindResource
Thewindresourcehowfastitblows,howoften,andwhenplaysasignificant
roleinitspowergenerationcost.Thepoweroutputfromawindturbinerises
