Noonekeepsanexactcount,butroughcalculationsbasedonthegovernment'ssurveysuggestthatperhaps1,600AmericanpublicandprivateschoolsareteachingChinese,upfrom300orsoadecadeago.Andthenumberisgrowingfast.
"It'sreallychangingthelanguageeducationlandscapeofthiscountry,"saidNancy.Otherindicatorspointtothesametrend."ThenumberofstudentstakingtheAdvancedPlacementtestinChinese,introducedin2007,hasgrownsofastthatitislikelytopassGermanthisyearasthethirdmosttestedAdvancedPlacementlanguage,afterSpanishandFrench,"saidTrevorPacker,vicepresidentoftheCollegeBoard.
