computers.Butthisisquitedifferentfromsayingthatalloughttoknow

howtoprogramone.Leavethattopeoplewhohavechosen

programmingasacareer.Whileprogrammingcanbelotsoffun,and

whileoursocietyneedssomepeoplewhoareexpertsatit,thesameis

trueofautorepairandviolin-making.Thereisnodenyingthat

studentsshouldlearnsomethingabouthowcomputerswork,justaswe

expectthematleasttounderstandthattheinternal-combustion

engine(內(nèi)燃機)hassomethingtodowithburningfuel,expandinggases

andpistons(活塞)beingdriven.Forpeopleshouldhavesomebasicidea

ofhowthethingsthattheyusedowhattheydo.Further,students

mightbehelpedbyacoursethatconsidersthecomputer'simpacton

society.Butthatisnotwhatismeantbycomputerliteracy.For

computerliteracyisnotaformofliteracy(讀寫能力);itisatradeskillthat

shouldnotbetaughtasaliberalart.

Learninghowtouseacomputerisnotthatdifficult,anditgets

easierallthetimeasprogramsbecomemore“user-friendly”.Letus

assumethatinthefutureeveryoneisgoingtohavetoknowhowtouse

acomputertobeacompetentcitizen.Whatdoesthephraselearningto

useacomputermean?Itsoundslike"learningtodriveacar",thatis,it

soundsasifthereissomesetofdefiniteskillsthat,once

acquired,enableonetouseacomputer.

Infact,"learningtouseacomputer"ismuchmorelike"learningto

playagame",butlearningtherulesofonegamemaynothelpyouplaya

secondgame,whoserulesmaynotbethesame.Thereisnosucha

thingasteachingsomeonehowtouseacomputer.Onecanonlyteach

peopletousethisorthatprogramandgenerallythatiseasily

accomplished.
