MyfriendandIhavearrivedinKatherine,atowninAustralia’sNorthernTerritory.We’reheretolearnaboutthelifeandcustomsoftheAborigines,whoarenativetoAustralia.TheAboriginalpopulationmightbesmall,butitsinfluenceisstillvisible.Forexample,“Bondi”in“BondiBeach”isanAboriginalwordmeaning“waterbreakingoverrocks”.

Tosurviveinthisvastlandontheocean,theAborigineshadtobeinclosecontactwithnature.Thisshowsintheirmusic,too,whichcelebratesthenaturalworldandthespiritualworldaroundthem.Mostoftheirmusicalinstrumentsarereallyjuststicksfoundontheground,amongwhichthereisanamazinginstrumentcalledthedidgeridoo.

It’salmosttimeformetosaygoodbyetoAustralia.I’veenjoyedmytimehereverymuch.Afterbeinghereforawhile,mybiggestimpressionisthecomplicatedmixofpeoplesandculturesthatmakeupthenation.Althoughthemainculturalinfluencesince1788hasbeenWesternculture,minoritycultureshavealsoplayedapartinshapingtheuniqueAustralianculture,withmanyofthenewculturalinfluencescontributedbyimmigrants.ItissaidthatnownearlyhalfofallAustraliancitizenswereeitherbornoverseasorhaveparentswhowerebornoverseas.

Personallyspeaking,whatIlikemostaboutAustraliaisthepeoplethemselves.Theyhaveastraightforwardandfree-and-easyattitudetowardslife,andtheirfriendlinessandwarmthmademefeelathomewhereverIwent.

AfterexperiencingAustralia,IhavetosaythatIagreewiththetourismslogan:“There’snothinglikeAustralia.”
