Dr.WildandDr.Aplinwerefollowinguptheworkpublishedin1934byHenrySmithWilliams,anAmerican

naturalist.Henoticedthatwhenheputvariouscoloredballsofyam(紗)outinhisgarden,almostalwaysoneand

onlyonebecamepopularthatseasonforincorporationintolocalbirds5nests.Butwhichparticularhue(顏色)was

favoredvariedfromseasontoseason.Thissuggestedthatthecolorchosenbyoneoftheearlybirdswasspottedand

copiedbyothers.

Williams'sworkwas,however,forgottenuntilDr.WildandDr.Aplincameacrossitwhilefollowingupona

differentstudy.Thisgroupnotedthat,duringanygivenbreedingseason,thebluetitmicetheywereinvestigating

tendedtoincorporatethesameplantsintotheirnestsregardlessofhowabundantthoseherbsactuallywere.This,too,

suggestedfashion-following-anditlikewiseledDr.WildandDr.Aplintospeculatethatbirdswerestudyingthe

nestsofothersandcopyingthem.Theythereforesetouttore-runWilliams'sexperiment.

Accordingtothestudy,of68titmicenestsbuiltthatseasonintheexperimentalareas,26includedwoolfroma

dispenser(分酉己器).Ofthese,18wereconstructedafterbothcolorshadbecomeavailablefromalldispensers.Even

so,10ofthat18includedonlythecolorofwoolfirstchosenbyanestbuilder.Bycontrast,alleightwool-bearing

remainsunclear.DrWildandDr.Aplinsuspectthetrendsettersareolderbirds,andthatevolutionfavorsyounger
