flockbelievedtobe1milewideand320miles(about515kilometers)longwasseen

nearCincinnati.

Sadly,theabundanceofpassengerpigeonsmayhavebeentheirundoing.Wherethe

birdswereabundant,peoplebelievedtherewasanever-lastingsupplyandkilledthem

bythethousands.Commercialhuntersattractedthemtosmallclearingswithgrain,

waiteduntilpigeonshadsettledtofeed,thenthrewlargenetsoverthem,taking

hundredsatatime.Thebirdswereshippedtolargecitiesandsoldinrestaurants.

Bytheclosingdecadesofthe19thcentury,thehardwoodforestswherepassenger

pigeonsnestedhadbeendamagedbyAmericansJneedforwood,whichscattered(驅(qū)

散)theflocksandforcedthebirdstogofarthernorth,wherecoldtemperaturesand

springstormscontributedtotheirdecline.Soonthegreatflocksweregone,never

tobeseenagain.

In1897,thestateofMichiganpassedalawprohibitingthekillingofpassenger

pigeons,butbythen,nosizableflockshadbeenseeninthestatefor10years.The

lastconfirmedwildpigeonintheUnitedStateswasshotbyaboyinPikeCounty,Ohio,

in1900.Foratime,afewbirdssurvivedunderhumancare.Thelastofthem,known

affectionatelyasMartha,diedattheCincinnatiZoologicalGardeninSeptember1,

1914.
