.Introduction1.1ThebackgroundofthestudyCollegestudentsstudyandliveinschool,sothedormitorylearningatmosphere,asapartofthedormitoryculture,hasagreatinfluenceonthegrowthofeachcollegestudentsandtheformationoftheirworldoutlook,viewonlifeandvalues.Eachmemberofthedormitorycomesfromdifferentregionsanddifferentfamily.Therefore,theculturalbackgroundembodiedineachcollegestudentisdifferent,andtheculturaltraditionisalsodifferent.Besides,withdifferentpersonallivinghabits,hobbies,personalityandotheraspects,eachstudentwilllivetogetherincollectivelife.Sodifferentculturalbackgroundswillbeblendedinthedormitory.Thedormitorylearningatmospherealsoinfluencestheperformanceofcollegestudentsunconsciously.Likewise,moreattentionhasbeenpaidtothedormitoryculture.Onthepastfewyears,therearemanyscholarswhohavestudieddormitoryculture,likeZhangYancui(2007),QuRenjun(2007),whoalldidaresearchondormitoryculture.However,manyscholarspaidmoreattentiontothedormitoryculture,butfewscholarsstudiedthecorrelationbetweenthedormitorylearningatmosphereandtheperformanceofcollegestudents,especiallytheresearchontheabilityofcollegestudentstolearnEnglish.Therefore,itisnecessarytohaveafurtherresearch.ThisthesisaimstodoaresearchonthecorrelationbetweenthedormitorylearningatmosphereandtheEnglishperformanceofcollegestudents.1.2SignificanceofthestudyTheuniversityislikethesecondhometownofcollegestudents.Then,thedormitoryisconsideredtobethesecondhomeofcollegestudents,anditalsoformsaspecificdormitoryculture.Differentfromhighschoolandprimaryschool,collegestudentsbudgettheirowntime,andteachersusuallydonotassignhomework.Self-studyhasbecomethemostimportantmethodoflearningforcollegestudents.Dormitoryandcollegestudentsareinseparable.Inmanycases,adjustingtheatmospherecanchangeprocessesandoutcomes.Withthepopularizationoftheconcept“atmosphere”,itisappliedinmoredetailedconcept,suchasteamatmosphere,negotiationatmosphere,organizationalatmosphereandsoon.Itcanbeseenthattheatmosphereactuallyexistsinallplaceandalsoaffectspeople’spsychologyandbehavior.Therefore,thereisalsoanatmosphereincollegestudents’dormitory,whichhasagreatimpactonthepsychologyandbehaviorofcollegestudents.Discussingtheinfluenceofdormitorylearningatmosphereoncollegestudents’EnglishperformancehaspracticalandreferencevaluefortheschooltocreateagooddormitorylearningatmosphereItalsogivesomesuggestiontocollegestudentstoimprovetheirlearningabilityindormitory.LiteratureReview2.1ThedefinitionofdormitorycultureThedefinitionofdormitorycultureinEncyclopediaisthatitisformedinmutualadaptationandconflictwherestudentshavedifferentpersonalitiesbuttheyareintheequivalentculturallevels.Thecharacteristicsofdormitoryculturearecombinationandharmony.Theatmosphereisthecombinationofthepsychologicalfactorsthatcaninfluencethebehaviour.Theatmosphereisinvisible,butitobjectivelyexists.Itissomewhatsimilartotheelectricfield.Sometimestheinteractionbetweenonematterandanotherdoesnotmilitatesbydirectcontact.In1997,theformerStateEducationCommissionrequeststrengthentheeducationalfunctionofdormitoryincollege.OnMarch26,2004,theMinisterofEducationemphasizedtheimportanceofthedormitoryagain.Underthenationalcall,manymajoruniversitiesbegantopaymoreattentiontothedormitorymanagementanddormitoryeducation.Manyresearchershavealsostudiedanddiscusseddormitoryculturefromdifferentaspects.2.2OverviewofthepreviousstudiesAccordingtoTheCollectiveofWorkGroupMoods,Therelationshipofteammemberscouldcauseemotionalconflicts,whileemotionalconflictisnotalwaysthesourceofotherconflict.Butotherconflictscouldcauseemotionalconflicts,theresultingofcausingemotionalconflictshasnegativeimpactontheteamvitalityandtheachievementofteamgoals.Fromtheperspectiveofsystem,itanalyzedthecausalrelationshipbetweenemotionalconflictsintheteamandtheirchangesinbehavior.Italsodiscussestherelationshipsbetweentheinterpersonalrelationandthevitalityoftheteam.Fromtheperspectiveoforganizationalbehavior,mostoftheresearchfocusonthecurrentsituationofcollegestudents’dormitoryatmosphereandthevariableswhichaffectthedormitoryatmosphereofcollegestudents.Itturnsoutthatthedormitoryatmosphereofcollegestudentsisgenerallymoderate.Theatmosphereofcommunicationisbetterthanthelivingatmosphere,thelivingatmosphereisbetterthanthelearningatmosphere,andthelearningatmosphereisbetterthanthephysicalenvironment.Itshowsthatthedormitoryatmosphereofcollegestudentsisgenerallygood.Becausethedormitoryisaspecialspaceforcollegestudents,theatmosphereofcommunicationandthelivingatmospherearebetterthanthelearningatmosphereandthephysicalenvironment.(ZhangYancui,2008)Inaddition,thedifferencegenderandagehavesignificantimpactontheoveralldormitoryatmosphereofcollegestudents.Fromtheaspectofachievementmotivation,RenYiexploredthecorrelationbetweenthedormitoryatmosphereandtheachievementmotivationofcollegestudentsthroughthescaleofachievementmotivationandthescaleofcollegedormitoryatmosphere.Itfoundthattheeffectofthedormitoryatmosphereissignificant,whichindicatedthatthedormitoryatmospherehasagreatimpactonthemotivationachievement.Ingooddormitoryatmosphere,students’lifeisharmonious.Theyhelpeachotherandcompetewitheachother,sothattheircompetitiveconsciousnesscanbedevelopedpositively.Inaddition,thecorrelationbetweenthe“one-child”variableandthedormitoryatmosphereisremarkable(2013).Therefore,therearetheinteractionbetweenthepursuitofsuccessandthedormitoryatmosphere.Thegooddormitoryatmospherecanspurcollegestudentstowardssuccess.However,researchershavedifferentopinionsonwhetherthedormitorylearningatmosphereisinfluencedbythegenderofcollegestudentsornot.Someresearchersbelievethattherelationshipwithroommatescanaffectcollegestudents’studyresults.Theinterpersonalrelationshipinthedormitoryalsohasdifferentmanifestationsindifferentgendersofcollegestudents.Dormitorieswithharmoniousrelationshipstendtobemoreactiveinlearning.Somescholarsbelievethatthisphenomenonisnotdistinctiveinnormaluniversities.Inaddition,someresearcheshaveshownthatboysaremorelikelytobeaddictedtoonlinegamesthangirls.Whenapersoninthedormitoryisaddictedtothegame,otherstudentsareeasilycaughtinit,sincethemainformofonlinegamesismultiplayerroleplay.Collegestudentswhoareaddictedtoonlinegamesarepronetolearningburnout,andlackofconcentration.Inaddition,mostscholarsbelievethat,indifferentages,therearedifferentatmosphereincollegestudents’dormitory,butthespecificmanifestationsisnotthesame.ZhangYancuialsopointsoutthat,ineachgrade,therewasasignificantdifferenceinthedormitorylearningatmosphere.Itshowedthatthedormitorylearningatmospherehasadownwardtrendinthefreshmantojunioryear,andtheseniorsreboundedslightly(LiLi,ZhouXiaohua,2015).Therearealsoresearchthatshowedthedormitorylearningatmosphereisanimportantfactoraffectingthedegreeoflearningengagementofcollegestudents.Withthedevelopmentofinformationtechnology,Internetmediahasalsobeenusedwidelyinproduction,lifeandlearning,andhasplayedanactiverole.Thedormitoryhasalsobeengraduallywell-equippedandactsasanimportantlearningplacetocollegestudents.Collegestudentscannotonlyobtaininformationfrommultiplechannels,butalsoenrichtheirlives.ThemodernmediabecomemoreprominentinEnglishlearningofcollegestudents.TherationalapplicationofmediahasapositiveroleforimprovingEnglishlearningabilityofcollegestudents(ZhangYi,2018).Therefore,thedevelopmentoftheInternethasahugeimpactonthedormitorylearningatmosphere.Italsoaffectsstudents’learningperformance.Itcanbeseenfromtheaboveanalysisthatthediscussion,fromdifferentaspect,onthedormitoryatmosphereofcollegestudentsisstillcomprehensive.However,thereislittleresearchonthecorrelationbetweenthedormitorylearningatmosphereandtheperformanceofcollegestudents'learningperformance,especiallytheresearchontheEnglishlearningabilityofcollegestudents.Atpresent,thefactorsthataffectthedormitorylearningatmosphereofcollegestudents,andthecorrelationbetweendormitorylearningatmosphereandEnglishperformanceofcollegestudentsneedstobefurtherexploredandstudied.MethodologyInthisthesis,Englishperformancewillbecomparedfromdormitorylearningatmosphere.Themethodologyofcontrastandcasesstudywillbeadapted.Inthefollowingchapters,thisthesiswillbeanalyzedwhetherthedormitorylearninghascorrelationwithEnglishperformanceornotandwhatfactorsarethataffectthedormitorylearningatmosphereofcollegestudents.Atthesametime,usingquestionnairestoanalysisthecorrelationbetweendormitorylearningatmosphereandEnglishperformance.3.1ResearchsubjectThisstudyisconductedinonecollegeinHubeiprovince.Forthreeabovereasons,Iselectcollegestudentsfromfourthyearassubjects.Firstly,freshmenandsophomoresareinthestageofadaptationbecausetheyjustcometotheuniversity.Classmatesandroommatesjustgettoknoweachother,sothedormitorylearningatmosphereisquitedifferentanduncertainty.Therefore,theycannotbetakenastheresearchobject.Secondly,insteadofchoosingstudentsofthesamemajoronly,studentsofdifferentmajorsarealsoselected,becausetheresultsfrommultipleperspectivesaremoreaccuratethanthatfromaspecificperspective.Thirdly,anonymoustypeimprovethereliabilityandauthenticityofthedata(Refertoappendixforquestionnaire).Thestudentswhohavebeensurveyedwerevoluntary.Differentdepartmentweretakenasasample.180questionnairesweresentoutand134validquestionnaireswerereturned.But120participantsofthevalidquestionnaireswereselected.The120participantsareagedbeyond20yearsold.The60participantsarenon-Englishmajorsandthe60areEnglishmajors.Therearereasonstoselectnon-EnglishmajorstudentstocomparewithEnglishmajorstudents.First,theyhavenotonlyformedasetofself-methodtolearnEnglishclassingradefour.Thatistosay,theyhavetolearnEnglishbythemselveswithoutteachers’instructionintheirsparetime.ComparedtheirlearningstrategieswithEnglishmajorstudents’learningstrategies,schoolcancreateagooddormitorylearningatmospherefrommorecomprehensiveview,andcollegestudentscanalsoimprovetheirlearningabilityindormitory.Italsohelpsthefreshmandeveloptheirownlearningstrategiesinthefuture.Forthefurtherstudy,studentsweredividedintotwogroupsaccordingtotheirscoresontheEnglish.Thefirstwashigh-achieversgroupscoringgreaterorequalto70.Thenthesecondwaslow-achieversgroupscoringbelow70.3.2ResearchquestionsTheresearchquestionsofthisstudyareasfollows:WhetherdoesthedormitorylearningatmospherehavecorrelationwithEnglishperformanceornot?Whatarethefactorsthataffectthedormitorylearningatmosphereofcollegestudents?3.3InstrumentThestudyinstrumentsincludeonepart:1)QuestionnaireonthecorrelationbetweenthedormitorylearningatmosphereandEnglishperformance.Thequestionnaire(seeingAppendixOne)contains11itemsintotal,including10choicequestionsandanessayquestion.3.4DatacollectionInNovember2018,90fourth-yearEnglishmajorstudentsfromrandomclassesatHubeiUniversityofEducationwereaskedtoanswerthequestionnaire.Atthebeginningofthesurvey,thestudentsweregivenabriefintroductiontothistopic.Goodunderstandingwouldincreasetheaccuracyoftheirresponses.Afterthat,90fourth-yearnon-Englishmajorstudentswereaskedtoanswerthequestionnaire.ThenIcollectedthequestionnaire.180questionnairesweresentoutand134validquestionnaireswerereturned.But120validquestionnaireswereselected.Uptothat,thewholedatawerecollectedsuccessfully.4.ResultsandDiscussionAlargenumberofresearcheshavebeenanalyzeddormitoryculture.Inthischapter,dormitorylearningatmospherewillbestudiedindetailsthroughthefollowingmostimportantaspects:1.dataanalysis;2.thegeneralsituationofdormitorylearningatmosphere;3.Influentialfactors;4.theadvicetoimprovingdormitorylearningatmosphere.4.1DataanalysisThedataanalysisinthisstudyisinterpretiveandtosomeextentspeculative.Thedatawillbeanalyzedlikethis:Thefirststepofdataanalysisistosetupadatafile.Whenthequestionnaireandthestudentsachievementhavebeencollected,adatafileshouldbesetupbynumberingallthequestionnaire.Thesecondstepofdataanalysisistoinputthedataandcalculatethedata.Thethirdstepofdataanalysisistoselectappropriatestatistics.Accordingtothescores,statisticsdataisdividedintotwocategories.OneisstudentswithgoodEnglishperformance,anotheroneisstudentswithpoorEnglishperformance.Theinformationofparticipantscanbeknownbyansweringthefirstthreequestionsaboutgender,majorandEnglishscores.Then,theparticipantswereclassifiedintotwogroups.Questions4to9mainlyinvestigatethecooperativelearningbetweenstudentsandtheirroommates.Question10istounderstandthelearningattitudeoftheparticipants.Thelastshortanswercanlearnmoreaboutopinionsofparticipantsonthistopic.Herearethequestions4toquestion11.Question4iswhetherroommatesinterferewithyourstudyornot.Question5iswhetherroommatesattachimportancetolearning.Question6iswhetherroommatesputforwardlearningproblemsanddiscusswitheachother.Question7iswhetherroommateshelpeachotherornotwhensomeonehasdifficultiesinlearning.Question8iswhetherroommatessharelearningresourcewitheachotherornot.Question9iswhetherroommatestrynottodisturbyoulearning.Question10iswhetheryouindulgeyourselfornotwhenyourroommatesdonotlearn.Question11iswhetheryouthinkthedormitorylearningatmospherehascorrelationwithEnglishperformanceornot.StudentschooseA,BorCtoshowtheiropinion.Theanswersaredrawnasfollows(Table1):Table1:StudentswithgoodEnglishscoresStudentswithplainEnglishscoresOptionsABCABCQuestion4411653497Question56012891130Question668845738Question772534541Question8685712731Question9611186440Question104146220317Question11(shortanswer)103studentssaidthedormitoryhasgreatcorrelationwithEnglishscores.Accordingtotheresults,studentswithgoodEnglishscoreswillstudyandoftendiscussstudyproblemstogether.Theywillhelpeachotherinstudywhenothersfacedwithdifficultiesinstudy.Theysharelearninginformationandresourceswiththeirroommates,andmostoftheywillnotindulgethemselvesinstudy.Sotheirdormitorylearningatmosphereisgenerallygood.StudentswithplainEnglishscoresarelesslikelytohelpeachotherinstudywhenothersfacedwithdifficultiesinstudy.Theyhardlysharelearninginformationandresourceswiththeirroommates,andmostoftheywillindulgethemselvesinstudy.Sotheirdormitorylearningatmosphereisnotgood.TheresultshowsdormitorylearningatmosphereofcollegestudentshasagreatcorrelationwithEnglishperformance.4.2ThegeneralsituationofdormitorylearningatmosphereTable2Accordingtothetable2,85%ofthestudentswithbetterEnglishperformancethinkthatroommatesattachgreatimportancetostudyandoftendiscussstudyproblemstogether.Whenfacedwithdifficultiesinstudy,90%ofstudentschoosetohelpeachother.85%oftheparticipants’roommatessharelearninginformationandresources.Only5%ofstudentswillindulgethemselvesbecausetheirroommatesdonotstudy.Table3Incontrast,accordingtothetable3,76%ofstudentswithplainEnglishperformanceneverdiscusslearningproblemswithroommates.Whenstudentsencounterdifficultiesinlearning,82%ofstudentschoosenottohelpeachother.24%oftheparticipants’roommatessharelearninginformationandresources.Even40%ofstudentswillindulgethemselvesbecausetheirroommatesdon’tstudy.Generallyspeaking,thedormitorylearningatmosphereofcollegestudentsisnotgood.StudentswithbetterdormitorylearningatmospherecanbefoundtohavebetterEnglishperformance.Onthecontrary,studentswithlessactivedormitorylearningatmospherehaveplainEnglishperformance.Therefore,itcanbefoundthatthelearningatmosphereofcollegestudents’dormitoryhasagreatcorrelationwithEnglishperformance.4.3InfluentialfactorsAccordingtothesurveyresults,twofactorswhichaffectthedormitorylearningatmospherecanbeanalyzed.Thefirstoneiscooperation.Thecooperationmeansthatroommateshelpsuperviseandencourageeachother,andtheyalsoshareinformationresourceswitheachother,studytogether,anddrivesotherstostudy.Weoftenseesuchreportsthatmanystudentsinthesamedormitorygetpostgraduatedegreeatthesametime.Onthecontrary,therearesomeotherdormitorywhosemembersareaddictedcollectivelytotheInternet,sotheirperformanceisgenerallypoor.Therefore,thebetterlearningcooperation,thebetterdormitorylearningatmosphere.Thesecondispersonallearningattitude.Nowadays,mostcollegestudentslackofgoodstudyhabits,initiativeinlearningandpoorplanning.Mostofthestudentsmainlyarrangetheirstudyaccordingtotheschedule.Theyonlyattendclassesanddohomeworkassignedbytheteacher.Theyseldomreadprofessionalbooksafterclassandhavenoclearplanfortheirsparetime.However,whentheexamisapproaching,studentsaremoreactiveinstudyandwillconsciouslyarrangeforit.Thedormitorylearningatmosphereisalsogood.4.4TheadvicetoimprovingdormitorylearningatmosphereForthestudents,firstly,theyshouldmakestudyplansandsetclearlearninggoal.Secondly,theycanstudywithroommatesandsuperviseeachother.Forexample,practicingoralEnglishtogether,correctingeachother’smistakesafterwritingandsoon.Thirdly,theyshouldcontrolthemselvessothattheywouldnotbeaffectedbyotherpeople.Fortheteachers,firstly,theyshouldguideandhelpstudents.Theteachershoulddiscoverthestudentswhohaveproblemsinthecooperationandcommunication.Thentheycangivesomeproperguidanceandhelppromptly.Studentsshouldbegivenenoughtimeandspacetodeveloptheirstudyplansandsetgoals.Secondly,tocreateaharmoniousatmosphereofcooperation,teachersshouldtakevariousformstoencouragestudentstoparticipateactivelyincooperativelearning,especiallyencouragethosewithlearningdifficultiestojoin.Teacherscanorganizegroupactivitiestoimprovethelearningatmosphere.Finally,theindependentlearningabilityofstudentscannotbeignored.Fortheschools,firstlytheycanorganizelearningactivities,forexampletheschoolreadingdayandsoon.Secondly,theycanorganizeanexchangemeetingtoletteacherscommunicateanddiscusswitheachother.Thentheycanmakecorrespondingadjustmentofteachingcontentsandplans.Finally,schoolsshouldstrengthentheeducationalfacilities.Forexample,studentscanenjoyelectronicresourcesinthedormitorythroughthepopularizationofwirelessnetworksandsoon.5.Conclusion5.1SummaryThedormitorylearningatmospherecan’tbeignored,whichaffectsstudentswhoarefromdifferentculturesanddifferentbackgrounds.Thelearningmethodofstudentsisinfluencedbydormitory,sotheirEnglishperformanceisquitedifferent.Whenstudentsstudy,otherswillprobablybeinfluenced,especiallyinthedormitorywhichhasagreatinfluenceonthegrowthofcollegestudentsandtheformationoftheirworldoutlook,viewsonlifeandvalue.Inacomparativestudy,itisobviousthatthereisastrikingdifferencebetweengooddormitorylearningatmosphereandpoordormitorylearningatmosphereintheEnglishperformance.Thefactorswhichaffectdormitorylearningatmospherearemainlyclassifiedintotwoaspects:cooperationandpersonallearningattitude.Thisthesisjustanalyzesthegeneralsituationofdormitorylearningatmosphere;factorsthataffectthedormitorylearningatmosphere;thecorrelationbetweendormitorylearningatmosphereandEnglishperformance.Basedonthepreviousstudy,inordertoimprovedormitorylearningatmosphere,itisbetterforstudentstohavegoodself-controlinlearningandcooperatewithroommates.What’smore,thebetterdormitorylearningatmosphereissignificantforcollegestudentstostudywell,notonlyinEnglishbutalsoineachsubject.Thispaperhaspracticalandreferencevaluefortheschooltocreateagooddormitorylearningatmosphereandgivescollegestudentssomeadvicetoimprovetheirlearningabilityindormitory.5.2limitationsInthisstudy,theevidenceindicatesthatthedormitorylearningatmospheredidaffectsuccessinlearningEnglish.Butthissurveyisnotcomprehensive.Aboveall,thesamplingismadeinonlyoneschool,sotheresearchconclusionislimited.Sincethisstudywasconductedwithalimitednumberofuniversitystudents,otherstudiesneedtobestudiedwithbiggersamples.Thesamestudycanbeconductedwithdifferentmajorsinthefurthersothatthefindingcanpresentamorecomprehensiveresults.Thesameresearchcanbealsoconductedonmiddleschoolandprimaryschoolstudents,whicharestillweaklinks.Sotheresearchneedstobetestifiedfurtherbymultiplecasestudies.Bibliography[1]Amanda,J.G.,M.,&A.D.Melanie.TheBurnoutPhenomenon:AComparativeStudyofStudentAttitudestowardsCollaborativeLearningandSustainability
