Withasenseofsmellthat’stensofthousandsoftimesmoresensitivethanhumans,dogscanbetrainedtofind
spottedlanternflyeggs.Researchshowedthatprofessionaldogscandothiswithaccurateinformation.But
professionaldogsareexpensive,andtherearen’tnearlyenoughofthemtocoverthegrowingdanger.Sothe
researchersadvisedthetensofthousandsofdogownersalreadydoingscentdetection(氣味探測)asahobbyto
findhiddenscentsforfuninhomes,parks,andtrainingclasses.Andover1,000dogownerstookpartinthestudy.
Theresults?Dogscorrectlyidentifiedthespottedlanternflyeggs82percentofthetimeinthecontrolledtests.
Inthereal-worldfields,accuracydroppedto61percent—stillbetterthanmanyhumansearches.“Anytimeyou
