wonthe2004PulitzerPrizeforfiction,theAmericanBookCriticsAssociationAward,and2005IMPACDublininternationalprize,wontheNationalBookAwardfinalistsagain.1.3IntroductiontoEdwardJonesEdwardJonesisafamousAmericanblackwriter,hefinishesthismasterpiecehard,andhemakesAfro-Americanliteraturetoanewpeak.Asacreator,heshapesthecharactersinthenovelwithaheightofview,endowsthenovelepicspiritatthesametime,andalsoshowsthecomplexityofhumanbeings.2.Henry’sIdentityConstructionThispartisoneofthemainbodiesofthispaper.Thefirstpartshowsthereasonofidentityconstruction,andthenmainlydescribeshowtomakeidentityconstruction.2.1Henry’sIdentityLossThispartmainlytalksaboutthereasonswhyHenrymakesconstruction.Therearetwomainreasons:thesurvivalenvironmentfactorsandHenrypsychologicalfactors.2.1.1HenrySurvivalEnvironmentFactorsThenovelbeginswiththedeathoftheprotagonistHenry,andrunsthroughthewholetextinanon-linearway.Henrywasaslave,fromachildhelivedintheplantationwithhisparentswhichbelongstowhiteslaveLordWilliamRobins.Andheacceptedunconditionaloppressionfromthewhiteslaveowners.Identityconstructionisparticularlyimportantformarginalizedpeople.ChrisWeldonsaid:“forthosewhoaretreatedintheinhumanways,andareregardedasthe‘other’peopleregardlessofgenderorrace,therightstospeaking,andrespectsforothersareveryimportant.Theseoftencomefromtheirsensesofbelongingtoagrouporcommunity”(Weldon155).Manyfactorsaffecttheidentityconstruction,Henry’slivingenvironmentsfromchildhoodandself-consciousnessurgedhisidentityconstruction:WhenHenry’sfatherAugustgotfreedomandwentawayfromtheplantationattheageoftwenty-twoyearsold,hewasnolongeraslavebutbecameafreecarpenter.Threeyearslater,whenHenrywasnineyearsold,hisfatherpaidaransomforgettingthefreedomforhismotherRydermill.Hisparentslefttheplantation;itremainedamarkinHenry’sheart,Henrycriedtorefusetolethisparentsleave.Henryspentalongtimelivingaloneduringparentswereabsentfromhim.Henrybecametheonlyslaveinthefamily,andhissenseofbelongingwasshattered.Asparents’identitychangesgaveHenryobstructionabouttheneedsofmeetingthefamilyloveandbelongingness,alsocontributedtoHenry’sservility—slaveconsciousness.ThewhiteslaveownersRobbinsgaveprovisions,onlyHenry’sparentscancometovisitHenryonSunday.Inliming,theparentswouldappearonSunday,broughtsomedeliciousfoodtomeetthebasicphysiologicalneedsofHenry.Foralongtime,afewweekstheywouldsawHenry,whenhisparentsgotfreedom,theytoldHenrythathewouldsoonbefree.AsAugustpromised,“youdon'thavetowaituntilyougrewup;youwouldcomehomewithus”(Jones19).However,thepromiseofparentshadnotbeenfulfilled,theyoungHenrygraduallyfeltabandonedbytheirparentsgenerally;hecouldnotgettoomuchloveandcarefromtheirparents.Henrygraduallychangedhismind.Hestayedinwhiteplantationfrommorningtonight,alsohedidnotgettoomuchlovefromparents;hishearthadnosustenance,causingHenryidentitylost,hewasconfusedabouthisexistence.HeleftfromhisparentsandlivedinRobinson’splantation;thethinking,behaviorsandlanguagesofwhiteslaveownersgavelittleHenrythepotentialandprofoundandlastinginfluences.AsHenrywasborntobecleverandsensible,hegotthewhiteslaveownersappreciation.HenrymadeRobbins’sahostler;hecouldaccompanyRobbinsandstaywithhimdayandnight.HenrycameandwentinManchesterandsomeotherplacesalongwithRobbins.LarryRogeroncedividedearlyblackslavesintothreecategoriesduringcivilwar,theyare:fieldslaves,domesticslavesandcraftsmanslaves,thendomesticandcraftsmanslavesareclosetothelifeofmaster,itiseasytobeacceptedandevenassimilatedbythemaster’sthoughts:“familyslavesandcraftsmenslaveswouldacceptwhiteslaveownerscertainaspectsoftheculturalcustoms.”(Roger177).AsaslaveatRobbins’shome,HenrylaterbecameafreemanbutstillwasRobbins’scraftsmanslave,soRobbins’sbadbehaviors,abusivelanguageswouldstayintheheartofHenry,whichhasgreatinfluenceonthegrowthofHenry.Thewhiteslaveownergavethisinfluence,itisfarmorethanwhattheparentsgaveHenry.ThoseinfluencescamefromparentsorthewhiteslaveownersbothleftamarkonthegrowthofHenry.ThosekindsoffamilyenvironmentsandlivingenvironmentswouldbringimportantchangestothegrowingHenry.TheenvironmentsthatcomefromtheoriginalfamilyeducationandtheinfluencesofthelivingenvironmentplayedaveryimportantroleonHenry’sgrowth.TheenvironmentoforiginalfamilyeducationrunsthroughHenry’slife.Familyeducationisthefoundationofalleducation,theinnatequalitiesletHenryhavesomedistinctivecharacteristics,butthekeytodevelopingistheinfluencescomefromthefamilyenvironment.Astheblackslaves,theseparatedfamilyenvironmentcouldnotmakeHenrygetmuchneeds,sotheoriginalecologicalfamilyenvironmentwouldbeashortboardduringHenrygrewup,whichaffectedallHenry’slife.Atthesametime,theenvironmentthatisthesocialenvironmentatthattime,thewhitedominatedAmericansociety,blackslaverystillexisted,theblacksconstantlywereoppressedbywhiteslaveowners,Henrywasinfluencedbytheenvironmentinthesocietyfromchildhood;itwasadirectrelationshiptoleadtoHenryidentityloss,eventuallyitledtoHenrytomakeidentityconstructionuntiltheidentitydissimilation.HenrygrewupintheWhiteSlavePlantation,hewasinfluencedbythelivingenvironment,itcannotdowithoutthepacesofsocialdevelopment,atthattimeintheUnitedStates,thewhiteslavegavetheblackslavesaverybadattitudeinplantation;Henryhadlivedtheoppressedenvironmentforalongtime,hewouldbeaffected,evenhewouldbechanged,andhecontinuedtomakethenewself-cognitionandidentityconstructionagain.2.1.2HenrypsychologicalfactorsAtthesametime,afterHenrylosthimselfundertheinfluencesofenvironments,hishearthasalsoundergonegreatchanges.ThelittleHenry,hisbodywasinthegrowingperiod,andthepsychologychangedalongwithages.Henry,whowasinhisearlychildhood,wasverysensitive,andhewouldfeelhisheartthroughtheoutsideworldgavehisattitude.Meanwhile,thecareswhichwerenotworthmentioningcamefromparentsandtheaccompaniesthedayandnightthatcomefromwhiteslaveownersmadeadistinctivecontrast,Henrywaslonelyintheearlystagesofgrowth,hewaswillingtoacceptmorewarmthinordertomeettheneedsinhisheart.NomatterwhogaveHenrycaresandcompanionshipwhathewantedtoget;hewouldnarrowthedistanceinhisheartandaccepteachother,sothathecontinuedtoimitate.Robbins,thewhiteslaveowner,wastheonlyonewhogavewarmthtoHenry;thetimelywarmthhelpedhimtochangethepsychology.JustasHenrydiscoveredthathisparentsdidnotlovehimasmuchashehadimagined,andsoonhewasfreetogohome,hefeltthathisparentshadabandonedhim,andhadaseriouspsychologicalchange.However,Robbinstreatedhimfriendly,hewouldfeelonlyherecouldseehope;hewouldtrytodohiswork,hewouldbemoreenthusiasticinordertogetsomerecognitionofthemaster,andthenthewhiteslaveownersgavehimgoodattitude.SoHenrydidn’tcareaboutwakingupveryearly,andhewouldworkbeforethesunhadnotyetraisedwithaheartfilledwithpassion,alsogavethemostconveniencestothewhiteslaveowners.So,Henrygraduallywasfarawayfromtheparents’feelings,andincreasedthefriendshipwithwhiteslaveowners,theformofflashbackofthisnovelalsojustsuggestedthattheemotionalreasonswhyHenrylaterbecameslavelord.Ideologywouldmakethebehaviorsandlanguageschange,theenvironmentalimpactmadeHenrycognitionwarpabouthisself-consciousness,whichledtotheconfusionoftheinnerperception,makingidentitylossduringgrowth.Inthenovel,alargenumberoflanguagesareusedtodescribeHenry’sinnermonologue.Throughthepsychologicalgap,theideaofheart,aswellastheactionsofHenry,itcouldbefoundthatHenry’spsychologicalchangesduringgrowing.Henry’sself-perceptiongraduallychanged,Henryhadcertainawarenessabouthisthinkingbyfeelingsurroundingenvironmentandspeakingwiththepeoplearoundhim.ThepsychologicalchangesofHenryresultedthathebegantoassesshisidea,expectationandbehavior;thenmadeconstantlyself-regulation.ThereasonswhyHenrymadeconstantlyself-cognitionandpsychologicalchangesarethatHenrylivedinthewhiteplantation,itgavehimmanypersonalexperiencesandmemories,sothathedevelopedhisthinkingandimagination.Thelifeintheplantationgavehimagreatinfluence,thewhiteslaveowner’sattitudetowardshimandthewayshisparentstreatedhimweredifferentfromeachother.ItwasthedifferencesthatmadeHenry’spsychologicalchangemoreserious,andthesatisfactionhasagreatdeviation.Therefore,Henry’spsychologicalchangespromptedhimtorecognizetheidentityagain,andthenmadetheidentityconstruction.Thereweremanyfactorsleadingtotheconstructionofidentity,thisarticlemainlytalkedabouttheobjectiveenvironmentandsubjectivepsychologicalchanges,andthetwomainfactorsshowedthemainreasonsfortheconstructionofHenryidentity.Inaddition,theidentityconstructionwasalsoaffectedbythesocialenvironmentandtheneedsofpeople.2.2HenryMakesIdentityConstructionPeoplecannotlivelongwithemptysoul.AfterHenrylosttheidentity,heconstantlylookedfornewhope,andhestayedtogetherwiththewhiteslaveownersalongtime,deeplyaffectedbyhim;slowly,Henrymadeidentityconstruction.Tobias,aBritishscholar,thoughtthatthedeepreasonswhyHenrywenttothemainroadofslaverywerethatthealienationofemotionfromparentswhenhewasyoungandtheinfluenceofthewhiteslaveownerRobbins.(Tobias75).AnAmericancriticcalledStephenMarshallpointedout:“l(fā)onelyandneglectedinthecircumstances,peopletendtobreedtherights”(Marshall170).Intheprocessofidentityconstruction,Henrymadetwochanges:fromblackpersontofreeman,fromfreemantoblackslaveholder.Identityisnotstatic,anditisbuiltbythedayaftertomorrow,becauseidentityisalwaysinaprocessofchange”(Hall227).Henrywasborncleverandsensible;hehasgottenslaveLordRobbins’sappreciationandlove.HenryslowlyrealizedthatonlyRobbinscouldbringhimhope,andhecontinuedtoshowhimself;hewasnotafraidofhardwork,wantedtogiveagoodimpressiontoRobbins.SothatHenry’sparentscametovisithimlater,heavoidedmeetingthem;hewouldtellhisparentstheweatherwastoocold.Afteravoidinghisparentsmanytimes,hewouldtelldirectly:“Ijustforgot.”(Jones22).RobbinsgraduallyfoundthatHenrywasacleverandsensibleboy,sohegavespecialcares,regardedHenryashisownpropertyjustlikehisownchild.WhenHenrywasdeliberatelyabsentfrommanyfamilygatherings,hisfatherangrilypushedhimontheground,thenthewhiteslaveownerRobbinswouldmakeasternwarningtoHenry’sfather,hewarnedAugustnottodosomewrongthings,especiallyforHenrybecauseHenrywashisproperty.RobbinshadayoungandpleasingHenry,regardedhimasavaluablepropertymorethananyotherslave.WhenHenrygothisfreedomfromthewhiteRobbinsthroughhisownefforts,Robbinslefthimhisplantationandlivedwithhiminthesameplace.Robbinsputhiminaseparateshantyshacks,differedotherslavers.Asafreemanhecouldjustcomeandgowithfreemencertificate.AmericanpsychologistAbrahamMaslowin1943inthe“human”incentivetheoriesproposedinthispaper,humandesiresandneedscanbedividedintofivecategories:physiologicalneeds,safetyneeds,loveandbelonging,respectandself-realization,arrangedrespectivelyfromlowertohigherlevel.Aftertheneedsofself-realization,peoplealsoneedSelf-Transcendencedemands.(Maslow370—396).Hehasbeenafreeman.Henry’spursuitwasfarmorethanthis,influencedbythewhiteslaveowners'ideology.Whenhelosttheidentity,Henrywantedtoseekmoreinnersatisfaction.RobbinswouldhelpHenryaccumulatewealth.InfluencedbyRobbinsdayinanddayout,HenryfoundthatonlytobecomeamanlikeRobbins,hecouldpursuehisself-esteemandidentity.UndertheinfluenceofRobbins,Henrygraduallyfadedfromhisblacktraditionandbegantoassimilatewiththewhitemainstreamsociety.Henrywouldcontinuetobuildhisidentitywithahigherdesireandneed.AndafterHenrybecametheblackfreeman,Robbinsstilldotedontohimall,gaveHenrythebootsandshoesfromtimetotime,byprovidinglifenecessitiesandpreferentialtreatmentstosatisfyHenry’sneedsforphysiology,safety,belongingnessandlove.Inasense,hewantedHenrytorespecthimanddeepenHenry’sservilityanddesalinatedHenry'blackslavishness.RobbinsbegantopayattentiontoandreliedonHenry,hegraduallycultivatedakindoflovetoHenrywhenHenryreceivedtheotherwhitescornsandinsults;Robbinswouldstandupforhim,Henrygraduallyshowedfear,loveandloyaltytoRobbins.WhereverRobbinswent,hewouldmentionthenameofHenry.ForHenry,Robbinswasworthrespectingandservingforhimatall.Slowly,Henrybecamefamousinthecircle,peoplepraisedhim“Godwouldhopethatleatherbootswornonthefeet.”(Jones121).ThefamousHenry’sprideanddesiregraduallyoverwhelmed,hebegantosavemoney,andRobbinstaughthimthevalueofthemoney.Robbinshadthedesiretocreatehisownkingdom,andHenryaccompaniedhimmanytimes.BythetimeHenryhadaccumulatedacertainamountofmoney,hehadbuiltahouseofhisownaroundtheplantationofRobbins’,andRobbinsgavehimalotofhelpsandadviceforhim.Henrystillhadahigherseeking;hewantedtolivethelifethatwasjustlikeRobbins’,althoughhewasablackman.Robbinsrepeatedlydemonstratedwealthandshowedtherights,andconstantlystrengthenedthevalueofHenryasaslaveownerandstrengthenedconsciousnesstostimulateHenry’sdesireforwealthandpoweroftherightsoftheworld.UnderhisexperienceandtheinfluenceofRobbins,
Henryalwaysthoughtthathewouldneverbealone,andifapersonbelongedtohim,itwouldbeakindofhappiness.Finally,undertheguidanceofRobbins,heboughtthefirstblackslavefromRobbins,whogrewupwithhimasayoungman,andHenrybecameaslaveowner.AfteralongtimeHenryhesitatedtotellhisabsolutelyignorantparentsaboutit,hisparentsreflectedsurprise,negation,opposition,butHenrystillinsistedonhisownbehaviors.Augusthithimwithastick;Henrygrabbedthecrutch,brokenonhisknee,said“thisisthefeelingsasamaster”(Jones148).angrilyinresponsetoangryfather.Henrygothisownhouse,thefirstslavesofhisinRobbinsblessing;HenryusedhismoneytobuyapieceoflandfromRobbins,laterexpandedplantationarea.FormthistimeHenrybegantobecometheblackslaveownersofthetruemeaning,intheprocessofidentitybuilding,Henrywasclosedtotheslaveowner.Untilhediedattheageofthirty-one,astheblackslaveHenryhadthirty-threeslaves,evenmorethan50acresofland;theresultswereveryhighforHenry’sposition,itwashigherthanalotofpeopleinManchesterCounty,theblackandwhite.Inthisregard,MarshallbelievedthatthefundamentalreasonwhyHenrychangedslavesintoslavelordwasthathisinnerdesireforpower,“(Henry)regardedhisownexperienceasadisguisetocoveruphisattemptstoruletheothers”(Marshall161).Henryhadgonethroughalongprocessofidentityconstruction.Inthisprocess,thetwochangesofidentitymeantthathehasmadethedifferentidentityconstructiontwotimes.Fromblackslavestoblackfreepeople,Henry’sidentityconstructionshowedthathedidnotmeetthecruelsituationwhattheblackslaveswereoppressed;inordertoseekthefreedomhemadeidentityconstruction;andhejustfollowedthefootstepsofhisparents,thisidentityconstructionwasreasonable.Atthesametime,italsoreflectedtheslaveryoftheUnitedStates,thewhitepeoplegaveconstantoppressiontotheblackpeople;iftheblackworkedhard,theycouldexchangeforfreedom,butalsotheblackpeoplealsohadfuture.However,afterHenrybecameafreeman,hedidnotsatisfythecurrentsituation,hemadethesecondidentityconstructionbutitwasnotsoreasonable,theblackHenrywasinfluencedbythewhiteslaveowners,hethoughtthatifhebecamethesamerolewithwhitecharacter,hecouldbeamemberofthewhitesociety,hethoughtthatheimitatedthewhitebehaviorsandthoughts,
thedistancebetweenthemwouldbecloser;andatlast,hewouldblendinthewhitedominatedsociety.However,itturnedoutthatafterHenrybecameaslaveowner,hisformerwhitemaster,Robbins,stillregardedhimasablackslaveinhisheart,andstilllookeddownuponhim.ThisshowedthatthenineteenthCenturyAmericansociety,slaveryandracismgavetheblackpeopleoppressionformanyyears,sothatpeopledidn'tbreakawayfromthisingrainedphenomenon.Henryeventuallybecametheslaveowner,itcamefromtheneedsinhisheart,healsowantedtobethewhiteslaveowners,hecouldcontrolothersandleadtheslaves,andhewantedtogethappinessbycontrollingothers.Jones,theauthorusedthestoryofplantationslaverywhichpeoplehadbeenfamiliarwithit,hefoundthatpeoplehadnotunderstoodthereality;heshowedthecomplexityofslaveryinAmericanhistorywiththewayofnarrating.TheauthornotonlymadeasimpledescriptionabouttwochangesofHenry’sidentity,thestoryofHenrywasjustapoint,theauthoralsocombinedthedifferentcharactersandthepeoplearoundHenrytogether,heportrayedtheinhumanslavery,andinthissocialenvironment,thecomplexhumannaturedisplayedbydifferentpeople.3.Henry’sIdentityAlienationThispartistheothermainbodyinthispaper.AfterHenrymakesidentityconstruction,whatresultshehas.thisparttalksabouttheresults,thatisidentityalienation;includingthoughtandbehavioralienation.3.1Henry’sThoughtAlienationTheprocessofHenry’stransitionfromslavetoslaveownerrevealedthatblackpeoplefoundtheirownidentityinthewhitedominatedsociety.Afteridentityconstruction,therewouldbealotofchanges.FortheidentityconstructionofHenry,hischangeswerethatinhisblackslaveconsciousnessinhisheartandtheservilityfromtheeyesofthewhitepeople.IntheprocessofHenrygrowingup,hewasinfluencedbytheenvironmentandhispsychologicalchanges;hestaggeredintothewhiteworldstepbystep.Whenhebecameablackslave,thereweretoomanyblackpeopleinthenature,whoweredifferentfromthewhite.DuringHenry’sidentityconstructiontoalienation,theinfluencesofthewhitemanhadchangedhimfundamentally.AccordingtoLarryRoger’sinterpretation,Negrobelongstodifferentcategoriesslaves,theyarenotthesameaboutthefeeling,whodidnotexperiencetheevolutionoffieldanddirectlywasafamilyofslaveswasnoteasytohatemaster,insteadproducingaspecialfeelingmoreeasily.(Roger31).RobbinsprotectedHenrywell,sohispsychologywouldbemoreintense,andRobbins’sapprovalwouldmakeHenryproud.RobbinsinducedHenrytobemasterstepbystepafterHenrygotfree,onceyouhadthem,andifyouhadone,youwouldnotbealoneintheworld.(Jones92).RobbinstriedtoconvinceHenrytobuyslaveswiththeassumedwords.WhenHenryboughtthefirstblackslaveMosey,Henrytreatedhimasabrother,whentheyworkedhardaday,theywouldbeinfrontofthehousewheretheybuilttoholdtogether,theyplayedrolltorolllikefamilymorethanasaplaymate.Thatistosay,althoughHenrybecamethetrueslaveowner,hewasnobarrierorthedistancebetweenslaves;hisinnerwasstillblack,atleasttothesamecolorblack,hehadnothavetoomuchmalice,yethewasaslaveowner,andhedidnothavetoomuchideaaboutthis.HisalienationcamefromthewhiteslaveLordRobbins;whenhesawHenrytreatedhisslavesfriendlyandharmonious,hewasnotsatisfied;hewouldthinkthatHenrywouldnotprotecthisownproperty;inhisopinion,theslavewasakindofproperty,andthepropertyatanytimewouldhaveavalue-addedpossibility.JustashelovedHenryvery
