1Scope
Thisdocumentspecifiestestmethodsfortheevaluationoftheexpansionpropertiesformoisturecuring,self-curingactivatableorwaterdryingfoamsdispensedfromsinglepressurizedfoamcontainers.
Thisdocumentdoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisdocumenttoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatoryrequirementspriortouse.
Thefollowingtestmethodsaredescribed:

4Testmethods
4.1Method1-Dimensionalstability
4.1.1Principle
Thefoamisdispensedinthegapbetweentwoparticleboards.Whenfoamisfullycured,thedimensionalstabilityofthefoamisdeterminedbymeasurementofthedistancebetweenthepanelsoverseveraldaysandweeks.
NOTETypicallyOCFstendtoshrinkwithinthefirstfewdaysaftercuringduetogasreleasefromtheclosedcells.Thevanishingpropellantleavesanunder-pressureinthecellsresultinginashrinkingofcellsize,thereforethewholefoamshrinks.Thiseffectisusuallycompensatedoverseveraldaysbytheslowerpermeationofair.
Shrinkingfoamcanaffectthesealingofjointsbyseparationfromthesurfacesordeformationofthejoints.ThedegreeofshrinkagedependsnotonlyontheOCFformulation,butalsoontheenvironmentalconditionse.g.humidityand/ortemperature.

Foreachmeasurement:
TwoP3orP5particleboards(compliantwithEN312)withdimensionsof200mm×100mm×10mm(length×width×thickness).
2spacers,notwaterabsorbing,notadherent[e.g.polyethylene(PE),polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE),onwhichpolyurethane(PU)doesnotadhere),thickness20mm,length90mm.

4.1.3Sampling
Conditioning
Bringthetestcontainertothetesttemperatureforatleast24h.
Theparticleboardsshallbestoredattestconditions[(23±2)℃and(50±5)%RH]foratleast1week.
Testpieces
Onesetupconsistsoftwoplatesandtwospacers(seeFigure2).Marksareputontheparticleboards(seeFigure1).Atthesemarksthewidthwillbemeasured(fourreadingpointsperjoint).
4.1.4Testprocedure
General
Itisnecessarytocarryoutatleastthreemeasurementstoobtainastatisticallyrelevantmeanvalue.
Whenpre-moisteningisrequired,theparticleboardsarewettedabundantly(see

Measurement
Thestandardfixationperiod(timebetweenfoamingandremovingclamps)formoisturecuringfoamis24h.Forotherfoamsthejigdwelltimeisasrecommendedbythemanufacturers.Incasenofixationtimeisindicated,astandardperiodof24hshallbeused.
Afterthefixationperiodtheexcessfoamiscutaway.Beforethefixationisremovedfromthestack,thewidthofeachjointismeasuredbetweentheparticleboards(inside)atthefourcorners,usingtheVerniercaliper.TheinitialvalueservesasaveragedreferencevalueAoforthefuturemeasurements.InanidealmannerAoisidenticaltothewidthofthespacersandtheirdimensioncanbetakenoverwithoutfurthermeasurement.
Theclampsandspacersareremovedandthesamplesareputintotherequiredclimateforfurtherstorage(seeFigure4).Furthermeasurementsaretakenafter1day,2days,3days,7daysand14days.Ifthevaluesmeasuredafter14daysstillpointtosignificantchangesindimensions,furthermeasurementsafter3weeksand/or4weeksmaybenecessary.Usuallytherelevantvaluesarereceivedwithinthefirstfewdays.
NOTEBeforethemeasurementsaretaken,thestacksareremovedfromtheclimatechamberand
acclimatisedfortwohoursatnormalclimate(ifstoredatdifferentconditions).
Storageconditions
Thetestpiecesarestoreduprightallthetime.
Storageconditionsshallreflectactualenduseconditions.TheconditionsinTable1andTable2belowareprovidedonlyasaguidelineforextremeresults(shrinkage/expansion):

4.2Method2-Curingpressure
4.2.1Principle
Thefrothisdispensedintothegapbetweentwoparallelplates,whichareconnectedtoapressuremeasuringdevice.Thepressurebuildupismeasuredduringthewholecuringprocessuntilthemaximumlevelisreached.
NOTEThehardeningofpolyurethanebasedfoamsleadstovolumetricgrowthandpressurebuild-upofthedispensedfroth.Thispressureisintendedtoensureadhesiontothesubstrates;however,cancausejointdeformation.Thepressurecanbeabsorbedbythetemporaryinstallationofclampsorspacers.Incaseswherethisisnotpossibleusingalowcuringpressurefoammaybehelpful.
4.2.2Equipment
P3orP5particleboards(compliantwithEN312)withdimensionsof200mm×100mm×10mm(length×width×thickness)withsidessealedwithanimperviouswaterproofcoatingorsealantmaterial(e.g.epoxideorpolyesterbasedproductorsiliconesealant).
Spacers,notwaterabsorbing,notadherent,(e.g.polyethylene(PE),polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE),..onwhichpolyurethane(PU)doesnotadhere),thickness20mm.
Conditioningchambercapableofbeingcontrolledat(23±2)℃and(50±5)%RH.
Tensiletestingmachine,withacapacityupto2kNfittedwithsuitablemetallicpressuresensorplatestomeasuretheforceexertedbythefoamduringthetest(seeFigure5).
4.2.3Sampling
Conditioning
Testconditions:(23±2)℃and(50±5)%RH.Anydeviationfromtheseconditionsshallbenotedinthetestreport.
Bringthetestcontainertothetesttemperatureforatleast24h.

4.2.4Testprocedure
Assembling
a)Formoistening,theparticleboardplatesareimmersedinwaterfor20s,takenoutandstoredverticallyfor2minonawaterabsorbingtissue.
b)Buildahorizontaljointandputitbetweenthetestingmachineplates.Thespacersshallnotmoveduringtheprocessandshallbefixed(seeFigure5).
c)Adjustthepositionofthepressuresensorsplatessothattheytouchtheparticleboardplatesandapplyforceof10Nandzerothetensiletestingmachine.

4.3Method3-Postexpansion
4.3.1Principle
Thefoamisdispensedintoalinearjointuptoadefinedlevel.Thefoamexpandsduringthecuringphasetoitsfinalvolume.Thepostexpansionisthevolumeincreaseexpressedasapercentageofthedispensedfroth.
NOTETheevaporationofpropellantsand,incaseofpolyurethanes,thegenerationofCOz,expandsthedispensedfrothtoalargervolume.Thisexpansioncancausewasteoffoamandotherunwantedeffects,whicharehardtoanticipate.Bycalculatingthepostexpansionfactor,theconsumercanestimatethenecessaryfllingdegreeofthedispensedfrothtoavoidoverexpansion.
4.3.2Equipment
