AlthoughtherearefewrefugeesinLatinAmerica,thereareupto3millioninternallydisplacedpersonsintheregion,includingasmanyas480,000inPeruand6,000,000inColombia.Inbothcountries,acombinationofpoliticalandsocio-economicfactors,suchasexcessivelyunequalincomedistribution,drug-traffickingandheavyinvolvementofthearmyinthepoliticalscene,haveresultedinhighlevelsofviolenceandaclimatethatfostershumanrightsabuses.Whethermanifestedasanongoingconflictbetweenthearmedforcesandthearmedopposition(thecaseofPeru),oraconstantarmedstrugglebetweenrebelandparamilitarygroups(thecaseofColombia),violencehascausedthedisplacementofhundredsofthousandsofruralpeasantsandnativepeople.Theinternallydisplacedoftenleadaverystableexistence,andtheyarehighlygratefulforanyonewhopaysattentiontotheirplight(averybadsituationthatsomeoneisin).
