Lawrencehadmanyaffairswithwomeninhislife,ContextincludingalongstandingrelationshipwithJessieChambers(onwhomthecharacterofMiriamisbased),anengagementtoLouieBurrows,andaneventualelopementtoGermanywithFriedaWeekley.
SonsandLovers
waswrittenin1913,andcontainsmanyautobiographicaldetails.ManyofLawrence’snovelswereverycontroversialbecauseoftheirfranktreatmentofsex,andboth
TheRainbow
and
LadyChatterley’sLover
werebannedduringhislifetime.Thiscontroversialtreatmentofsexisevidentaswellin

19ThePlotIntheworkSShestruggleswithpovertyandisdeterminedtokeepPaulfromthecoalmine.ButwhenhewasinlovewithMiriam,afarmer’sdaughter,conflictingemerged.Mrs.Morelwasafraidthatshemightlosehimsoshedidherbesttocomebetweenthem.Paulwastornbetweenthetwowomen.Finally,thetwolovershadtodivorcefromeachother.PaulstartedhavinganaffairwithClara,amarriedwomanwholivesseparatedfromherhusband.Butthisattachmentgraduallyfizzledout(失敗).Tooclearly,bothfailureswerecausedbythepossessivemother.
