extendingcarebeyondtraditionalmedicalservicestoencompassholisticsocialcare.Thisshiftisattributedtothegrowingrecognitionoftheprofoundconnectionbetweenthesocialdeterminantsofhealthandoverallwell-being.Asaresult,providersandpolicymakersareintegratingsocialcareintopublichealthsystemsto
addressthemultifacetedneedsofpatients.
Theglobalhealthcaresectoronceagainfacesayearof
unprecedentedtransformationandchallenges.Providers
worldwidecontinuetoconfrontthelingeringeffectsof
theCOVID-19pandemic,whichhasledtowidespread
laborshortagesandrisingcosts.Thesectorhasalsobeen
buoyedbythebroaderadoptionoftechnologysuchas
artificialintelligence(AI)thatcanaddresssomeofthose
issues.
Ashealthcarecostscontinuetoescalateglobally,
theaffordabilityofcareremainsacriticalconcern.
Governments,payers,andprovidersaretakingmeasurestocontrolcostswhilemaintainingthequalityand
accessibilityofhealthcare.Fromvalue-basedcaremodelstoinnovativepricingstructures,theseevolvingstrategiesaredesignedtohelpensurecost-effectivehealthcare
delivery.
Atthesametime,thehealthcareworkforceisundergoingasignificanttransformation,drivenbyevolvingpatient
demographics,technologicaladvancements,and
changingcaredeliverymodels.Providersworldwidefacedeepshortagesofclinicians,andaretakinginnovative
approachestoimprovepay,reduceburnout,andbuild
trustinthehealthcareworkplace.Asprovidersworktoattract,train,andretainaskilledandmoreadaptable
talentpool,theroleoftelehealth,remotemonitoring,andthegigeconomyareallreshapinghealthcareworkforcedynamics.
Theglobalhealthcaresectorstandsatacrossroads
in2024,poisedforprofoundchanges.Thefutureof
globalhealthcareislikelytobeshapedbyinnovation,sustainability,socialcareintegration,costmanagement,andworkforceadaptation.
Atthesametime,healthinequitiespersistthatcould
furtheraddtothechallengesandcoststhesectorfacesin
2024.Leftunaddressed,thecostofhealthinequitiescould
tripletoUS$1trillionby2040—oraboutUS$3,000ayear
foreachperson.1
TheintegrationofAIandmachinelearningtechnologies
canplayakeyroleinaddressingtheseinequities,if
providersworktoearnpatients’trustandensurethatthey
takestepstomitigatebiaswithinthetechnology.
In2024,AIisexpectedtoplayapivotalroleinstreamlining
administration,diagnosis,treatment,andpatientcare.
Frompredictiveanalyticstoautomatingelectronic
healthrecords,AIcanfurtherenhancetheprecisionand
efficiencyofhealthcaredelivery.
Withthegrowingglobalawarenessofenvironmentalissues
andresourceconstraints,sustainabilityhasemerged
asacriticalaspectofthehealthcaresector.Healthcare
organizationsareadoptingsustainablepracticestoreduce
theircarbonfootprintandensureresponsibleuseof
resources.Fromgreenhospitaldesignstosustainable
supplychainmanagement,thisreporthighlightsthe
impactofsustainabilityonhealthcareoperations,aswell
asitspotentialforcostsavings.
Theuseofremotetechnologiesandtelemedicineadopted
duringthepandemicarehelpingtodefinenotjustthe
deliveryofcare,butalsothenatureofit.Providersare

MorethanthreeyearsaftertheCOVID-19pandemic,manyhealthcaresystemsgloballyarestillstrugglingwithitslingeringeffects.Theneedtoreducecostsandimproveaccesstocare—whilestillconfrontingashortageofskilledworkersandclinicians—has
drivensomehealthcaresystemstoadoptemergingtechnologytofillthegaps.6
Technologyoffershealthcareorganizationsachancetopersonalizepatientinteractionsandtreatment,
takingpressuresoffcliniciansforroutinecare,and
enablingthemtofocusontheproceduresthatrequiretheirexpertiseandtraining.
AIandotherformsofemergingtechnologyhave
thepotentialtostreamlinebothadministrativeandcareprocessesforhealthcareproviders.Between2019and2022,investorspouredUS$31.5billioninequityfundingintohealthcareAI,andtheindustry
hasconsistentlybeenaleaderinAImergersand
acquisitions.7Thepandemicdroveanincreasedfocus
ontelemedicineandonlineportalsforacuteand
wellnesscare.Forthesectorandpatientstocontinue
benefittingfromtechnology,however,providersshould
sustaininvestmentsintechnology—muchashospital
systemsandoperatorsinvestedinequipmentand
officesinthepast.8
Sofar,thisishappeningslowly.Globalfundingfor
digitalhealthdeclinedby3%inthesecondquarterof
2023,toUS$3billion—thelowestinsixyears.9Venture
capitalfunding,whichisoftenconsideredabarometer
oftechnologyinvestmentintheindustry,fellabout
30%in2022,toUS$27.5billionfromUS$39.3billion.
However,theinvestmentlevelsstilloutpacedpre-
pandemiclevels,andoverallfundinglevelscontinueto
accelerate,excludingtheboomin2021(Figure1).

Partofthereasonfortheslowingpaceofinvestmentmaybethatmanyprovidersmayhesitatetobeearly
adoptersofnewtechnology,especiallyforclinical
applications.Tightmarginsfromdecliningpublic
funding,fallingoutpatientrevenue,longerinpatient
stays,andlowerdemandforcarepost-pandemic
hascrimpedsomeprovidermarginsandreduced
technologyinvestments.ThemedianKaufmanHall
Year-To-DateOperatingMarginIndex,whichreflects
actualmarginsfor900UShospitals,was–0.2%
throughNovember2022.10Asdemandfortelemedicineandothertechsolutionswane,manywonderifthe
technologicaladvancesofthepastfewyearswillbepermanent.11
Yetthepotentialforfinancialbenefits,improved
caredelivery,andmoreefficientusesofresourcesis
fosteringnewfoundenthusiasmforAI.IntheUS,for
example,wideradoptioncouldgeneratesavingsof
asmuchasUS$360billionannually—roughly10%of
thecountry’shealthcarespending—inthenextfive
years.Forhospitals,thesavingswouldcomelargely
fromimprovementstoclinicaloperations,quality,andsafety;forphysicians,fromcontinuityofcare;andforpayers,fromimprovedclaimsandproviderrelationshipmanagement.12
Streamliningadministrativetasks
AI’slargestandmostimmediateimpactmaybeitsroleinstreamliningadministrativeprocessesandreducingexpenses.HospitalCEOsfacethreecorebusiness
challenges:marginpressure;recruitmentandretentionofstaff;andstaffburnout.AIhasthepotentialtoeasedocumentationburdens,handlepre-opworkflows,
andsimplifyinsuranceclaims,forexample.SomeUShospitalsareemployingAItoreviewpatientrecords
andmedicalpoliciesandaddressinsuranceclaims
denials,potentiallysavingprovidersmillionsofdollars.Morethan60%ofdeniedclaimsarerecoverable,yetbecauseoferrorsandlimitedhospitalresources,
only0.2%ofin-networkclaimsareappealed,leaving
millionsofdollarsayearwrittenoffasuncollectible.13AIcanalsominimizeerrorsandimprovecategorizationofincomingclaims,reducingbacklogsandpotential
paymentconcerns.14
Relievingcliniciansofthoseadministrativetaskscan
freeuptimeforthemtospendwithpatients.15Insome
cases,doctorsintheUSspendmorethantwo-thirds
oftheirtimeonadministrativework.WithAI-managed
electronichealthrecords(EHRs)andin-basket
management,providerscanreduceadministrative
demandsonphysicians,aleadingcauseofburnout.16
Atthesametime,AIhasthepotentialtoimprove
accesstocarethatisdesignedforpatients’specific
needs.Finland,whichbeganamajoroverhaulofits
healthcaresystemin2023,isbuildingadigitized
systemthatpledgestodeliverservicesthatareboth
personalizedandcosteffectivebyemphasizing
preventivecarethatmaykeep80%ofthepopulation
healthyby2030.Thatcanallowforadditionalsupport
forthe20%ofpatientswhoneeddiseasetreatment
orother,moreextensivecare.17Aspartofthiseffort,
Finlandanticipatesthat80%ofitscitizenswillbeusing
digitalidentificationbytheendofthedecade,andeach
citizenwillhaveaccesstodigitalmedicalrecordsand
e-healthservices.18
Improvingthequalityofcare
Inadditiontostreamliningservices,AIcanhelp
predictpatientoutcomesbasedontheirunique
healthprofiles,recommendtreatmentoptionstoboth
patientsandproviders,andalertclinicianstoconcerns
suchascontraindicatedmedicineorallergies.19
Meanwhile,generativeAIcanleveragethevarious
datasetsthatcontributetomedicaldiagnosesand
treatments,includingEHRs,sensors,andwearable
devices.Thistechnologycanplayavitalroleinearly
detectionofillnesses,interpretingradiologyresults,
andidentifyingpatientswiththemosturgentneedsfor
treatment.20
Healthcareprovidersarepartneringwithtech
companiestodevelopAItoolsthatcanbetterpredict
clinicaloutcomes,enhanceradiologicalimaging,and
optimizesleepmonitoring.NYUTron,alargelanguage
model,predictsmultipleclinicaloutcomessuchas
30-dayreadmissionrates,in-hospitalmortalityrate,
comorbidityindex,andlengthofstay.Themodel

reportedanaccuracyof79%inpredictingpatients’lengthofstay,a12%improvementoverconventionalmethods.21
Meanwhile,SubtleMedicalhasdevelopedtools
forgeneratingbetterradiologicalimagedataand
streamliningradiologyworkflow.Thecompany’s
proprietarydeeplearningalgorithmsenableupto
60%fasterPETandMRIscantimes,enhancingimagingefficiencyandimprovingthepatientexperience.22
AndZeppHealthhasdevelopeditsZeppAurasleep
andrelaxationplatformthatconnectswithitssmart
wearables.Thetoolofferspersonalizedsleepcoaching,sleepqualityanalysis,andAI-generatedsleepmusic
compositionsbasedontheuser’sheartratetohelpimprovesleeppatterns.23
Anotherchallengeforhealthsystemsismanaging
growingvolumesofdata.Theglobalhealthcaresectorgenerates19terabytesofclinicaldataannually.24AIcanhelpitusethisinformationmoreeffectively.Byusingcentralizedclinicaldata,providerscancreateamore
comprehensivepictureofthepatient,whileproducingmoreconsistentresultsandreducingthecostofcare.Themarketforinteroperableclinicaldataisexpectedtoalmostdouble,toUS$6.2billionby2026from
US$3.4billionin2022.25
Inthenearterm,AIcanmoreeffectivelyinterpretandrespondtoqueries,improvingpatientengagement
frominitialconsultationstopost-dischargefollow
ups.Inaddition,AI’sreal-timetranslationcapabilitiescanimproveaccessibilityandcontributetohealth
equityinareaslikesocialservices.Forexample,afterRussia’sinvasionofUkraine,DeloitteCzechRepublicdevelopedacloud-basedvirtualcontactcentercalledIRENA(ImmediateRefugeeNeedAssistance),builtonAmazonConnect,thatusedAI-enabledconversationswithavirtualagentinanylanguagepatientschose.26AsrefugeesfledacrossEuropeintheearlydaysoftheconflict,IRENAhandled10,000callsdaily,withasmanyas80%managedautomatically.
Expandingaccesstoservices
It’snotjustproviderswhocanbenefitfromAI
expandeduseincaredelivery.AImaybroadenaccess
tocareatalowercostthroughretailenvironments.
Patientscanmonitortheiroverallhealthandexercise
patternswithsmartphonesandwatches,increasing
thefocusonprevention.KrogerHealthwith12%
marketshareintheUS,operates220clinics,and
companiessuchasWalmart,Amazon,BestBuy,and
DollarGeneralhaveretailhealthcarefootprints
orhavetestedthewaters.Retailersalreadyhave
customerdata,theyknowhowtousetocreateahigh-
volumelow-costenvironment,andcanprovidemany
basicservicesforlessthanotherproviders.27
However,retailclinicsintheUSareconcentratedin
urbanandsuburbanareas,andretailershavebeen
reluctanttoopenclinicsinruralregionsbecauseof
lesscustomertraffic.Asaresult,aretailermayprovide
patientswithtechnologicalinnovation,butthose
benefitsmaybelimitedtocertaingeographies.28
AIcouldfurtherblurthelinesbetweenhumansand
technologythroughaugmentedreality,smartdevices,
andwearables.Moreover,investmentinsecuredata
environments(SDEs)andothermeasuresmayreduce
patientconcernsaboutdatasecurity.Inthefuture,AI
hasthepotentialtoassistinthreekeyareasofhealth
care:
?Intelligentdiagnosis:AI-enabledsolutionscouldsupportcliniciansinmakingprecisediagnosesusinginputsfromin-vitrodiagnostics,imaging,EHRs,
patientconversations,biometrics,images,sensors,wearables,andgenomics.
?Personalizedandadaptivecareplans:AIcould
interpretbiomarkerdatafromsmartdevicesand
wearablestogeneratetreatmentplanssuchassleepanalysis,dietarysuggestions,andevenAI-generatedmusicforstressmanagement.Moreover,ifapatientfaceschallengesinadheringtoaregimen,generativeAI-enableddigitalavatarscouldempathetically
interactwithpatientstounderstandtheirbarriersandofferpotentialsolutionsoralternatives.

?Populationhealthmanagement:AIcouldanalyzelargedatasetsandrecognizepatternscrucialto
spottinghealthtrendswithinapopulation.For
example,byreviewinggenomic,socioeconomic,
andEHRdata,AIcouldidentifyriskfactorsand
predictorsofdiseases,suchascervicalcancer.AI-enabledmarketingandcommunicationscouldthengeneratetailoredaudiovisualortextualinvitationsforscreeningservices.Responses,visits,andresultscouldthenbestoredandusedtobuildmorerobustmodels.29
Theessentialelementsoftrust
DespitethetransformativepotentialofAIinhealth
care,adoptionwilllikelydependonthetrustand
acceptanceofproviders,practitioners,andconsumers.
Healthcareandtechnologyprovidersshouldprioritize
responsibleandsafeuseofthistechnology.Toearn
patients’trust,thetechnologyshouldbefreeofbias,
inaccuracies,anddatabreaches(Figure2).30

Currently,AIismoreeffectiveathandling
administrativetasksthanindealingwithpredictive
diagnosesorcaredelivery.WhengenerativeAI
encountersgapsinitsknowledge,ittendstofillthemwithplausible-soundinginformationthatmaybe
inaccurate.TheseresultsareoftenreferredtoasanAIhallucinationorconfabulation.31
ImprovingtheknowledgebaseofgenerativeAI
requiresfindingqualityhealthcaredataandtherightfoundationmodels—bothofwhichmayrequirelargeinvestmentstoharnessthepower.Theseinvestmentscanbeessentialinbuildingpublictrust.32
TheCoalitionforHealthAI,whichincludesacademic
healthsystems,organizations,andexpertpractitionersofAIanddatascience,hasoutlinedcharacteristicsoftrustworthyAIthatinclude:
?Safety:AIsystemsshouldnotputhumanlife,health,property,ortheenvironmentatrisk.Inhealthcare,thisisfundamentallyanextensionoftheHippocraticOathto“donoharm.”AImodelscanbecomeunsafeforavarietyofreasons,includinginadequate
oversightforfairness,accountability,orbias.
?Accountabilityandtransparency:AIshouldbe
auditable;individualsshouldhaveaccesstotheir
datathatisenteredintothesystemandthesourceoftheinformationshouldbetraceable.
?Explainableandinterpretable:Physiciansshouldunderstandhowtheunderlyingprogramscompileinformation,andthesystemsshouldproduce
outputswiththecontextinwhichtheinformationisrequested.Inotherwords,healthcareAIcan’tbeopaque,thatis,withoutinsightintohowitsresultsareproduced.
?Fairandequitable:AIshouldnotincreasea
specificgroup’sriskforexperiencingbiasoradverseoutcomes.33
Regulatorychallenges
TheregulatoryclimatearoundAIingeneralischanging
rapidly.Governmentsworldwideareworkingto
establisheffectiveregulation.TheEUisleadingthe
charge.TheEuropeanCommissionestablisheda
regulatoryframeworkforAIin2021,andfinalrules
couldbeimplementedasearlyas2024.34
TheUKgovernmentinMarch2023published
guidelinesforregulatinggenerativeAIthatinclude
datareporting,lifecycleaccountability,and
industrycollaborationwiththegoalofencouraging
adaptivenessandautonomy.35
InBrazil,however,consensusamonglegalexperts,
academics,industryleaders,andregulatorshas
beenmoredifficult,andthecountryhasyettoadopt
acoherentframeworkforregulatingthediverse
applicationsofgenerativeAI.InNovember2022,a
groupoflegal,academicandindustryexpertsworking
withthecountry’sNationalDataProtectionAuthority
publishedguidelinesthatfocusedontherightsofthe
citizens,riskcategorization,andgovernancemeasures,
butthedocumentisbeingdebatedatvariouslevelsof
theBraziliangovernment.36
TheUS,meanwhile,hasnotadoptedcomprehensive
nationalregulatorylegislation,resultingina
fragmentedframeworkofstaterules.Tobring
greaterclarity,theBidenadministrationissued
anexecutiveorderaimedatgoverningtherisks
associatedwithAI.37,38
Thedisparityinapproachestoregulatingand
monitoringAIcouldposeadditionalchallengesto
healthcareproviders.

DeployingAIresponsiblyinhealthcare
AIhasthepotentialtotransformhealthcareby
optimizingbothadministrativefunctionsandcare
delivery.Itwillhavefinancialandnon-financialbenefitsfortheglobalhealthsystem,suchasimprovedcare
quality,enhancedpatientexperience,andgreater
cliniciansatisfaction.Privateprovidersmaygainthe
greatestbenefitsfromoptimizationincare,claims,andproviderrelationshipmanagement.
CompaniesthatinvestinAIearlyandidentify
opportunitiesforapplyingitacrossthevaluechainarelikelytogainacompetitiveadvantageanddelivermorepersonalizedcaretopatientsinthecomingyear.
However,companiesmusttakestepstoensureAIis
deployedresponsiblyandthatitsuseandprocesses
aretransparentandauditable.Organizationsthatdon’tbuildthisintotheirAIstrategyriskalienatingpatientsandotherstakeholders.ForthosewhobuildtrustinAI,thetechnologycancontinuetounlocknewinnovationsforyearstocome.
ForAItobeeffectiveinhealthcare,bothmedical
professionalsandpatientsshouldhaveconfidenceintheresults,understandhowthoseresultsare
achieved,andhaveconfidencethattheirconfidentialinformationwillbeprotected.
Considerationsforproviderstobuild
trustintotheirAIstrategy
Providersthatwanttofostertrustaroundtheiruseof
AIshould:
?AdoptstronggovernancepracticesaroundAItohelpensuretheorganizationcaninnovatewithconfidencewhilereducingtherisksthatcomewithcomplex
technology.
?Prioritizepatientdataprivacyandprotectionfrom
cyberthreatsbyaddressingexternal,physical,
anddigitalrisks.Oncetherisksareassessed,
organizationsmustdetermineiftheserisksoutweighthepotentialbenefits.
?EstablishresponsibilityandaccountabilityforAIin
