Now,alargenationalstudyfromBrandeisUniversitypublishedin(heAmerican
Jouma)ofGeriatricPsychiatryshowsthatthosewithlessschoolingcansignificantlymakeup
forpoorereducationbyfrequentlyengaginginmentalexercisessuchaswordgames,puzzles,
reading,andlectures.
“Thelifelongbenefitsofhighereducationformemoryinlaterlifearequite
impressive,butwedonotclearlyunderstandhowandwhytheseeffectslastsolong,”said
leadauthorMargieLachman,apsychologist.Shesuggestedthathighereducationmay
encouragelifelonginterestincognitiveefforts,whilethosewithlesseducationmaynot
engageasfrequentlyinmentalexercisesthathelpkeepthememoryagile(敏捷地).
Buteducationearlyinadulthooddoesnotappeartobetheonlyroutetomaintain
youriiiuinory.Thestudyfoundthatiiilullculualaclivilicsuiidurlakunregularlymadea
difference.uAmongindividualswithloweducation,thosewhoareengagedinreading,
writing,attendinglectures,doingwordgamesorpuzzlesonceaweekormorehadmemory
scoressimilarlopeoplewithmoreeducation,saidLachman.
Thestudy,calledMidlifeintheUnitedStates,assessed3,343menandwomenbetween
theagesof32and84withameanageof56years.Almost40percentoftheparticipantshad
atleasta4-yearcollegedegree.Theresearchersevaluatedhowtheparticipantsperformedin
twocognitiveareas,verbalmemoryandexecutivefunction—brainprocessesinvolvedin
planning,abstractthinkingandcognitiveflexibility.Participantsweregivenabatteryoftests,
includingtestsofverbalfluency,wordrecall,andbackwardcounting.
Asexpected,thosewithhighereducationsaidtheyengagedincognitiveactivities
moreoftenandalsodidbetteronthememorytests,butsomewithlowereducationalsodid
well,explainedLachman.
