EmilywasborninAmherst,Massachuettsin1830.Emilylivedsecludedinthehouseshewasbornin,exceptfortheshorttimesheattendedschool,untilherdeathonMay15,1886.
Emilywasanenergeticandoutgoingwomanwhileattendingschool.Itwaslater,duringhermid-twenties,thatEmilybegantogrowreclusive.Sheattendedalmostexclusivelytohouseholdchoresandtowritingpoetry.Emilyhadafewfriendsandacquaintancesfromdaytoday.OneoftheseacquaintanceswasThomasWentworthHigginsonwhomshesentafewpiecesofherpoetryto.Herejectedherpoems,buthewaseventuallythefirsttopublishherworkafterherdeath.Emilyonlyhadasixorsevenofherpoemspublishedduringherlifetime—andthosewithoutherconsent.
