Unit13SleeplessinSeattle(西雅圖不眠之夜)I.UnderstandingtheMovie1.BackgroundInformation(1)自遠古時期就居住在北美地區(qū)的印地安人,靠著打獵和捕魚維生,在深山林野中過著自給自足的部落生活,他們就是這兒的原住民,只不過他們的歷史并沒有記錄在美國通史里。

2.SynopsisSleeplessinSeattleisalovestory--astoryabouttwopeoplewhoclearlyaremeantforeachother:theyaredestinedtomeetandfallinlove.Theyareseparatedbydistance.Thechancethattheywillevermeetisremote.Theexcitementandsuspenseinthemoviedependsonourknowingthatthisisso,andseeingtheevents,andmishaps,andmisunderstandings,thateventuallybringthemtogether.TheloversareAnnieReedandSamBaldwin.AnnieisajournalistontheBaltimoreSun.Atthestart,sheisalreadysafelyengagedtoWalter,averysuitablehusbanddespitebeingallergictoeverything.However,therearehintsforAnniethatsomethingismissing.ShebelievessheisinlovewithWalter,butshehasasensethatherengagementlacksmagic,mysteryanddestiny.Samisanarchitect.Hisformermarriagewashappy,andheisstillmourninghiswifewhodiedfromcancerayearago.Heandhiseight-year-oldsonJonahmovefromChicagotorainySeattleinanattempttoescapethememoriesandstartanewlife.Jonahknowshisfatherneedsawife,andheneedsamother.Jonahtakesthefu'stcrucialstepbetweenSamandAnnie.HelistenstoaradiotalkshowwhichisverypopularinAmerica.Inthisshow,listenersareinvitedtotelephoneapresenterwhoisapsychologistusually.Andthelistenerwhophonesintheshowwillreceiveimpartialandsympatheticresponseoradvicefromthepresenter.Heneedn'tgivehisrealname.Hecanbeidentifiedbyasuitablepseudonym,ornickname.ThenamebywhichSamisknown--SleeplessinSeattle--givesthenametothemovie.Jonahcajoleshisfathertotalktothepresenter,Dr.Marcia.Samreluctantlyatlustopensupandtalksabouthisloveforhisdeadwifeandthethingsthatmadeherspecial.TheimmediateconsequenceisthatSam,tohisembarrassment,getsletters(forwardedfromthebroadcastingcompany)fromwomenlookingforhusbandsfromalloverAmerica!Hehasindeedmetawoman,butsinceshehasalaughthatresemblesahyena'scall,thesondoesn'tlikeher.TheotherconsequenceisthatAnniebecomesconvincedthatSamisherdestinyandsheiswillingtoriskherengagementforhim.ShehasaccesstovarietyofdatabasesonhercomputersothatshecangettheinformationaboutSam(Thisisoneoftheearliestmoviesinwhichthepartplayedbyinformationtechnologyiscrucial).ShewritestohimandeventuallyfliestoSeattle.However,sheromsbackdisappointedlyaftersheseesSamhugawomanandhisson,Jonah.JonahreadsAnnie'sletterandbelievesthatsheistheonewhocanfillthevoidinhisfather'slife.ButSamisreluctanttoinvolvehimseffwithanunknownwoman3000milesaway.JonahconnivestobringaboutameetingofAnnieandhisfatheronSt.Valentine'sDayinNewYorkonthetopoftheEmpireStateBuilding.Thatisatraditionalmeetingplaceandtimeforlovers--thetimeandplacechosenbytheloversinaclassicmovieAnAffairtoRemember.JonahisconvincedthatSammustbetheretoo,atthatplaceandatthattime.ButSamrefusestoundertakesuchanabsurdquest.Jonahhimselfmakesthelongjourney,knowingthatatthattimeandplacehewillmeetthepersonwhoshallbehismother.ThelittleboyfliestoNewYorkalone.Asdarknessfalls,thedistraughtfatherhurriestothebuildingandfindshisboy.Meanwhile,WalterandAnniemeetinarestaurantoppositetheEmpireStateBuilding.WalterpresentsAnniewithabeautifulringthathasoncebeenhismothers.AnnietellsWalterwhatsheexperiencesandfeels.Atlastshebreaksofftheengagement.Ofcourse,AnniemeetsSamandJonahonthetopofthebuilding.Theperfectmagiclovemakesthemtogether.II.ExcerptsfromtheMovieExcerpt1(Dr.MarciaFeildstone'sphone-inprogramonNationalRadio——YouandYourEmotions.)DR.MARCIA:Welcomebackto"YouandYourEmotions".I'mDr.MarciaFeildstone,broadcastingliveacrossAmericafromthetopoftheSearsTowerinChicago.Tonight,we'retalkingabout"WishesandDreams".What'syourwishthisChristmasEve?ANNIE:What'syourwish?Mywishistommtheradiostation...DR.MARCIA:Seattle,goahead.JONAH:Hello,thisisJonah...DR.MARCIA:Nolastnames,Jonah.Yousoundyoungerthanourusualcallers.Howoldareyou?JONAH:I'meight.DR.MARCIA:Hey,howcomeyou'reupsolate?JONAH:It'snotthatlateinSeattle.DR.MARCIA:Oh,ofcourse.You'reabsolutelyright.What'syourChristmaswish,Jonah?JONAH:It'snotforme.It'sformydad.Ithinkheneedsanewwife.DR.MARCIA:Youdon'tliketheonehehasnow?JONAH:Hedoesn'thaveonenow.That'stheproblem.DR.MARCIA:Where'syourmom?JONAH:Shedied.DR.MARCIA:I'msosorrytohearthat.ANNIE:Well,Icanbelievethis.JONAH:I'vebeenprettysad,butIthinkmydad'sworse.DR.MARCIA:Haveyoutalkedtoyourdadaboutthis?JONAH:No.DR.MARCIA:Whynot?JONAH:It'slikeitmakeshimsadder.DR
