Foreword—On-BoardDiagnostic(OBD)regulationsrequirepassengercars,andlightandmediumdutytrucks,toreportstandardizedfaultcodesformalfunctionsdetectedbytheOBDsystem.Thisdocumentdefinesthestandardizedsetoffaultcodes.

SAEJ2012wasoriginallydevelopedtomeetU.S.OBDrequirementsfor1996andlatermodelyearvehicles.ISO15031-6wasbasedonSAEJ1962andwasintendedtomeetEuropeanOBDrequirementsfor2000andlatermodelyearvehicles.ThisdocumentistechnicallyequivalenttoISO15031-6,withnewandrevisedfaultcodesincluded.

SAETechnicalStandardsBoardRulesprovidethat:“ThisreportispublishedbySAEtoadvancethestateoftechnicalandengineeringsciences.Theuseofthisreportisentirelyvoluntary,anditsapplicabilityandsuitabilityforanyparticularuse,includinganypatentinfringementarisingtherefrom,isthesoleresponsibilityoftheuser.”

Codeshavebeenspecifiedtoindicateasuspectedtroubleorproblemareaandareintendedtobeusedasadirectivetotheproperserviceprocedure.Tominimizeserviceconfusion,faultcodesshouldnotbeusedtoindicatetheabsenceofproblemsorthestatusofpartsofthesystem(e.g.,powertrainsystemO.K.,orMILactivated),butshouldbeconfinedtoindicateareasinneedofserviceattention.

Somerangeshavebeenexpandedbeyond100numbersbyusingthehexadecimalbase16numbersystem.

ISO/SAEControlledCodes(CoreDTCs)—ISO/SAEcontrolleddiagnostictroublecodesarethosecodeswhereindustryuniformityhasbeenachieved.Thesecodeswerefelttobecommonenoughacrossmostmanufacturers'applicationsthatacommonnumberandfaultmessagecouldbeassigned.Allunspecifiednumbersineachgroupinghavebeenreservedforfuturegrowth.Althoughserviceproceduresmaydifferwidelyamongstmanufacturers,thefaultbeingindicatediscommonenoughtobeassignedaparticularfaultcode.CodesinthisareaarenottobeusedbymanufacturersuntiltheyhavebeenapprovedbyISO/SAE.

ManufacturerControlledCodes(Non-UniformDTCs)—Areaswithineachalphadesignatorhavebeenmadeavailableformanufacturer-controlledDTCs.Thesearefaultcodesthatwillnotgenerallybeusedbyamajorityofthemanufacturersduetobasicsystemdifferences,implementationdifferences,ordiagnosticstrategydifferences.Eachvehiclemanufacturerorsupplierwhodesignsandspecifiesdiagnosticalgorithms,software,anddiagnostictroublecodesarestronglyencouragedtoremainconsistentacrosstheirproductlinewhenassigningcodesinthemanufacturercontrolledarea.Forpowertraincodes,thesamegroupingsshouldbeusedasintheISO/SAEcontrolledarea,i.e.,100'sand200'sforfuelandairmetering,300'sforignitionsystemormisfire,etc.

Codegroupingsfornon-powertraincodeswillbespecifiedatalaterdate.

WhileeachmanufacturerhastheabilitytodefinethecontrolledDTCstomeettheirspecificcontrolleralgorithms,allDTCwordsshallmeetSAEJ1930.

DiagnosticTroubleCodeDescriptions—Eachspecifiedfaultcodehasbeenassignedadescriptiontoindicatethecircuit,componentorsystemareathatwasdeterminedtobeatfault.Thedescriptionsareorganizedsuchthatdifferentdescriptionsrelatedtoaparticularsensororsystemaregroupedtogether.Incaseswheretherearevariousfaultdescriptionsfordifferenttypesoffaults,thegroupalsohasa“generic”descriptionasthefirstcode/messageofthegroup.Amanufacturerhasachoicewhenimplementingdiagnostics,basedonthespecificstrategyandcomplexityofthediagnostic.

Wheremorespecificfaultdescriptionsforacircuit,component,orsystemexist,themanufacturershouldchoosethecodemostapplicabletotheirdiagnosablefault.Thedescriptionsareintendedtobesomewhatgeneraltoallowmanufacturerstousethemasoftenaspossibleyetstillnotconflictwiththeirspecificrepairprocedures.Theterms“l(fā)ow”and“high”whenusedinadescription,especiallythoserelatedtoinputsignals,refertothevoltage,frequency,etc.atthepinofthecontroller.Thespecificlevelof“l(fā)ow”and“high”shallbespecifiedbyeachmanufacturertobestmeettheirneeds.

Discussion—ThefollowingTableA1isaguidelineusedtohelpindeterminingDTCdescriptions.AppendixBshowsapplicationsforrecommendedindustrycommontroublecodesforthepowertraincontrolsystem.Theseincludesystemsthatmightbeintegratedintoanelectroniccontrolmodulethatwouldbeusedforcontrollingenginefunctions,suchasfuel,spark,idlespeed,andvehiclespeed(cruisecontrol)aswellasthosefortransmissioncontrol.Thefactthatacodeisrecommendedasacommonindustrycodedoesnotimplythatitisarequiredcode(legislated),anemissionrelatedcode,northatitindicatesafaultthatwillcausethemalfunctionindicatortobeilluminated.
