Principalinvestigator→Bakeryshopowner.”Ilaughedandreposted,asmycareerpathissimilar,justslightlydifferent:“Undergraduate→Ph.D.→Postdoc→PrincipalresearcherANDBakeryshopowner.”1TextreadingUNIT6ReadingReadingInthepast10years,Ihavealwaysheldtwojobs.Ibegandesigningandsellingcakesin2013,andopenedaboutiquecafé,CakeResearcher,in2018.Duringthistime,Ialsobecameamother,completedmyPh.D.,andworkedasapostdoc.InowserveastheheadofresearchandinsightsforaconsultancycompanyintheNetherlands,whilealsoowningCakeResearcher.2TextreadingUNIT6ReadingReadingTheterm“slashcareer”or“slasher”waspopularizedinabook,OnePerson/MultipleCareers:TheOriginalGuidetotheSlashCareer.Slasherspursuemultiplecareersinsteadofjustone–akintotheslashsymbol“/”–oftenworkingonotherprojectsduringtheirfreetimeandgeneratingmultiplesourcesofincome.Beingaslashercanbeexhaustingattimes,butIalwaysmaketimeforrelaxationandIampassionateaboutmywork.Indeed,awork-lifebalanceisnotjustaboutbalancingtime,butaboutbalancingpassionandfulfillmentinallaspectsoflife–intellectual,emotional,andspiritual.3TextreadingUNIT6ReadingReadingThedecisiontopursuemultiplecareershasbeenanongoingchallengeforme.DuringthefinalyearofmyPh.D.,Iwaseagertoleaveacademiaandopenedmycafé.Morerecently,Ihavestruggledwiththedecisionofwhethertotakeatenure-trackpositionataprestigiousuniversityorjointheindustryfornewchallenges.It’sdifficultandevenfrighteningtochooseonedirection,asIhaveaconstantfearofmissingoutonopportunitiesthattheotherpathmayprovide.Fortunately,Ihavehadfantasticmentorswhohaveguidedmethroughoutmycareerjourney.4TextreadingUNIT6ReadingReadingAftercompletingmyPh.D.,Ihaddinnerwithtwoprofessors.Wediscussedmyideaofleavingacademiaandbecomingafull-timebakeryowner.Bothprofessorssupportedmycakebusiness,buttheyalsoexpressedregretifIweretowastemyyearsofresearchexperiencerightaftermylongPh.D.journey.TheysuggestedItrytodoboth.Asbothprofessorswereslashersthemselves,theyunderstoodthatpursuingbothpathscouldbethebestwaytomaximizemypassions.5TextreadingUNIT6ReadingReadingTheiradvicesparkedanewperspectiveforme.Ididn’thavetogiveuponecareerfortheother.Thisrealizationledtotheopeningofmycaféin2018,whileIundertookmypostdoc.ThecaféonlyopenedonSaturdays.Aftera40-hourworkweek,IwouldstartbakingcakesonFridaynightandworkuntillate.Aftergettingsomerest,IwoulddecorateandslicethecakesstartingearlyonSaturday.Thebusinesswasahugesuccess,withpeoplelininguptobuymycakes.However,aftermorethanayearofworkinginthismanner,mypassionhaddiminished.Therepetitiveworkatmycafé

drainedme,leavingnoroomforcreativityandputtingemphasisonquantityratherthanquality.Myidealvisionwasofaslow-pacedandpeacefulenvironmentwhereIcouldwelcomeguests,listentotheirstories,andsharecakesandhappinesswiththem.Unfortunately,therealitywasfarfrommyvision,asIfoundmyselfoverwhelmedandunabletointeractwithguests.6TextreadingUNIT6ReadingReadingIntheend,IclosedCakeResearcher,givingmyselftheopportunitytofocusonmyhealthandreflectonmyexperience.Iwasinitiallyconcernedpeoplewouldforgetaboutthebakery,butIwasprovedwrong.Despitethecafébeingclosed,privaterequestsformycakescontinuedtopourin.Iacceptedsomeoftheserequests,andthistimeIdedicatedmyselftoeachcake–showcasingmycreativity,love,andrespect.Ifoundthattheclientswerewillingtopayapremiumformymoreintricatecreations.Myrevenuecontinuedtogrow,evenasIproducedfewercakes,andmybusinessevolvedintoapremiumbrand.Now,inadditiontomyresearchjob,Ireservetwonightsaweekformakingcakes.7TextreadingUNIT6ReadingReadingThereareafewprosandconsofpursuingmultiplecareers.Ononehand,itgeneratesextraincomeandreducestheriskofunemployment.Italsooffersaninterestinglifestory,makingyoustandoutinconversationswithnewcolleagues,businesspartners,orpotentialemployers.Moreover,itgivesahighsenseoffulfillmentasyoudevelopdiverseskillsandbecomeanexpertintimemanagement.Ontheotherhand,beingaslashercanleadtoanexcessiveworkload,whichcanharmyourrelationshipsandhealth.Tocounteractthesecons,slashersneedtobemindfuloftheircapacityandsaynotoexcessivework.It’simportanttoscheduletimeforfamilyandfriendsandtomaintainaregularexerciseroutine.Afterall,goodhealthisparamountforeverything.Mystoryismeanttoinspireyoutothinkaboutyourtruepassion.Andifyoucan’tchoosebetweentwojobs,considerdoingboth.8TextreadingUNIT6ReadingTextunderstandingWhat“slashcareer”didtheauthorpursue?Howdidshemanagehermultiplecareers,andwhatmotivatedhertodoso?Readthetextandcompletethediagram.UNIT61Job1
