Executive

summary

Theclimatecrisisisincreasinglysteeringdecision-makingatthehighestlevelsofgovernmentandbusiness,yieldingacascadingseriesofsustainabilitytargets,commitments,andmandates.ButdatafromLinkedIn’smorethanonebillionmembersrevealsthattheglobalworkforceisnotontracktorealizethese

ambitions.

Weneedtodoublethesizeofthegreentalentpoolby2050—atabareminimum—tokeeppacewithprojecteddemand.1Roughlyhalfofjobsinthe2050greeneconomywilllackqualifiedcandidatesifwedon’tfocusonstrategic,expansiveupskilling.

Thisreportilluminatesglobaltrendsattheintersectionofclimateactionandtheworkforce.Weshowhow

governmentpoliciesarealreadyshiftingthesupplyanddemandforgreenskills,andrecommendhigh-impactpoliciesforgrowingthegreentalentpool.Wespotlighttwogroupscriticaltothegoalofdoublinggreentalent:GenZ,whichdesperatelywantstobepartoftheclimatesolutionbutisstrugglingtobreakin,andwomen,whomakeupjustathirdofgreentalentworldwide.Wealsodelveintofourindustrieswheregreenskills

developmentisparticularlyimportanttoreachingclimatetargets:energyproduction&utilities,construction,manufacturing,andtechnology,information,&media.

triplerenewablescapacityanddoubleenergyefficiencyby2030.Withthisdeadlineandthe2035targetforfulfillingclimateplanslooming,governmentleadersarenowpreparingtomakeunprecedentedinvestmentsinnewinfrastructureandinnovationsthatwillreduceglobalwarming—andshapetheeconomyfordecadestocome.

Theworldofworkischangingrapidly,andweneedpeoplewiththeskillstocombattheclimatecrisis,rightnow.Already,wehavefound,thehiringrateforgreentalentis54.6%greaterthanthehiringrateoverall.Byhelpingworkersdevelopgreenskills,wewillpositionthemtoaccessopportunitiesduringthisuniquewindowandoverthelongterm.

Theutilitiesindustry—drivenbytherapidexpansioninrenewableenergy—leadsallindustriesingreentalentdemand,withnearlyaquarterofjob

postings(23.1%)requiringgreenskills.Greenskillsarelikelytobecome

increasinglyimportantastheindustryconfrontsthecomplexitiesofoverhaulingthepowergridandtransitioningtorenewables.

Construction,ahard-to-abatesectorresponsiblefor

37%ofglobalemissions

,ispoisedforasubstantialinfluxofclimate-relatedinvestmentandwillbecrucialtoreachclimatetargets.Constructionhasthesecond-highestdemandforgreentalent—oneinfivejobpostings(20.6%)requiregreenskills.

Manufacturingdeliversthetechnologiesandproductsthattransformother

industries,butisalargecontributorofemissions.13.2%ofjobpostingsrequiregreenskills.Manufacturerswillfaceadditionalpressuretoreachnetzeroas

companiesacrossindustriesseektodecarbonizetheirsupplychains.

Thesharpestgreentalentdemandspikebetween2023and2024wasinthetechnology,information,&mediaindustry—wheretheshareofjobsrequiringgreenskillssurged60%asAIgainsfurthertractionandcompaniesadd

datacentercapacity.

Workersdesperatelyneeded:

Thegrowinggreenskillsshortage

Governmentsandcompaniesareinvestingheavilyinreachingambitious

climatetargets.Butthesegoalswillbeunattainable,andresourcessquandered,ifwedon’thavepeoplewiththeskillstobuildandpowernewinfrastructure,

developanddeployinnovativetechnologiesandprocesses,andrethinkexistingbusinessmodels.Wearealreadyfallingbehind.

Thecurrentgreentalentsupplyanddemandtrajectorywillleaveuslacking

nearlyone-fifth(18.7%)ofthegreentalentwe’llneedby2030—themidway

pointbetweenthe2025deadlineforcountriestocommittoNDCs,asoutlinedintheParisAgreement,andthe2035targetforfulfillingthem.By2050,thisgapwillswellto101.5%—leavinguswithouthalfthegreentalentthatemployerswill

need.

Governmentshavethepowertoinfluencedemandforgreentalentandcreateastrongsupplyofskilledworkers.Whengovernmentsinvestin,

incentivize,andde-riskclimatesolutions—andwhentheypartnerwitheducationalinstitutionsandprivatesectorplayerstoupskilltheworkforce

—climateplanscanbecomeblueprintstodelivereconomicopportunityandaviablepathtonetzero.

Greendemandversusgreensupply

Asemployersstrivetohitsustainabilitytargets,theyaredrivingupdemandforgreentalentinmostcountries.In2023,7.3%ofjobpostingsonLinkedInwereforagreenjoborrequiredgreenskills.Thisyear,thatfigureroseto7.7%.

ThepercentageofjobpostingsrequiringgreenskillsishighestintheUK,anearlymoverinestablishingclimatetargets2;13%ofUKjobsnowrequireatleastonegreenskill.FollowingcloselybehindareIreland(12.4%),Saudi

Arabia(11.7%),Norway(11.6%),andSwitzerland(11.5%).

Portugal,wherethelargestutility

announced

a$27billioninvestmentinnearlydoublingitsrenewableenergycapacitylastyear,postedthemostrobust

greentalentdemandgrowthbetween2023and2024.Theirshareofjobsrequiringgreenskillssurged71.3%,withothernotablespikesintheUK(46%),CostaRica(40%),Singapore(27.1%),andLuxembourg(27%).

Whyaresomegreenskillssuddenlyredhot?

Globally,weseethegreatestdemandandsupplygrowthforskillsinareasthathavebeenthefocusofrecentgovernmentclimatepolicies.These

includesupplychaindecarbonization,sustainableconstruction,renewableenergy,andecosystemmanagement.

PoliciesliketheEU’s

CarbonBorderAdjustmentMechanism(CBAM)

,whichattachesafeetoemissionsgeneratedduringtheproductionofimported

products,arepromptingcompaniestoexaminetheclimateimpactoftheir

entiresupplychains.Inconjunctionwiththisimperative,thisyear’sfastest-

growingskillswithintheglobalrenewablessector.ThesharpestspikewasforthesolarsystemdesignskillinBrazil,which9xasmanyworkersaddedtotheir

profilesin2024asin2023.Brazil’sboomingsolarenergysectorovertookwindasthecountry’ssecond-largestelectricitysourcein2023,thesameyearthe

workerswithgreenskillsaremorelikelytobehiredandgreenskillshaveprovenmoreresilientduringeconomicdownturns.Workerswhodeveloptheseskills

positionthemselvesforrolesinthegreentransformationunderway—future-proofingtheircareersasgreenskillsmovefrom“goodtohave”to“musthave,”muchlikedigitalskills.

Weneedeveryoneforthistransition,andeveryonedeservesaccesstothe

economicopportunityitbrings.Butcertainpopulations,includingGenZand

women,demandspecialfocusinourquesttodoublegreentalentby2050.GenZ,whichwillmakeup

,withstiffcompetitionamongjobseekersandhiringdeclinesinmanyeconomies,greenhiringisbuckingthetrend,presentinganopportunityforworkersacrossallgenerationsandgeographies.Greentalentisfarmorelikelytosecureajob,gettinghiredataglobalrate54.6%

abovetheeconomy-widehiringrate.

IntheUS,wheredemandforgreentalentgrew9.8%between2023and

2024(whilesupplyincreasedby3.1%),thehiringrateforgreentalentis80.3%greaterthanthehiringratefortalentoverall.

InIreland,wheredemandforgreentalentgrew22.1%between2023and2024(whilesupplyincreasedby6.3%),thehiringrateforgreentalentis79.8%greaterthanfortalentoverall.

IntheUK,wheredemandforgreentalentgrewastaggering46%between2023and2024(whilesupplyincreasedby5.3%),thehiringrateforgreentalentis72%greaterthanthehiringratefortalentoverall.

Remarkably,ourdataalsoshowsthatevenwhenjobpostingsdonotexplicitlylistgreenskills,employersfindtheseskillsappealing—andaremorelikelyto

hirecandidateswhohavethem.InFinlandandtheNetherlands,where

between2023and2024theshareofjobpostingsrequiringatleastonegreenskilldropped43.8%and20.1%,respectively,greentalentismorethantwiceaslikelyasothertalenttobehired.Similarly,inBelgium,wheretheshareofjob

postingsrequiringgreenskillsfell18.6%inthepastyear,workerswithgreenskillsarestill90.3%morelikelytobehired.

GenZwantsgreenjobsbutcan’tbreakin

GenZisperhapsthemostpromisingtargetforglobaleffortstodoublegreentalent,buttoday,only1in20GenZworkershavegreenskills.Thisgeneration(bornbetween1997and2012)isenteringtheworkforcemorequicklythananyothergenerationandtendstoviewtheclimatetransitionasbothanexistentialthreatandapromisingsourceofeconomicopportunity.

GenZwillmakeupone-thirdoftheworkforceby2030,akeystagingpostforachievingnetzero.Butatthecurrentrateofprogress,onlyonein10GenZworkerswillhavegreenskillsbythen.

Thisisnotduetolackofinterest.MorethanhalfofGenZers(61%)wanttoworkinagreenjobinthenext5years,andmorethanthree-quarters(78%)believetheycouldpickupgreenskillsifofferedthetraining.3Buttheyarestrugglingtofindawayin.

offeredtraining,they’dbeabletolearnthenewskillsneededtoperformagreenjob.ButemployershavebeenslowtogiveGenZthegreenskillstheywant,withjust30%ofGenZworkerssayingtheircurrentemployeroffersgreenskills

training.Greenupskillingisalsodifficulttocomebyfromothersources.Fewer

thanhalfofGenZworkers(41%)haveaccesstogreenskillstrainingprograms.IntheUS,thisfiguredropsto25%.

GenZers,likeothergenerations,areinsufficientlyawareoftheenormousrangeofroles,acrossindustries,thatcanimpactclimatechange.Fewerthan1in5

GenZershaveafullunderstandingofthedifferentcareerpathsforbreakingintogreenjobs—andwhatagreenjobcanbe.

Womenunderrepresentedasgreengendergappersists

Thereisapersistentgendergapinthegreenworkforce.Currently,10%ofwomenhaveatleastonegreenskill,comparedto17%ofmen.

Theglobalgreengendergaphasbeensteadilywidening,byanaverageof0.17percentagepointsperyear.Thisishappeningevenaswomenare

gaininggreenskillsmorequicklythanmen.Since2023,theshareofgreentalenthasrisen12%amongwomenand8.3%amongmen.Thegrowthinwomenenteringthegreenworkforceisstill3timestooslowtoclosethewideninggreentalentgendergap.

WhenLaurelYarosfoundherselfonthejobmarketafterherB2Bsoftwaresalesteamwascutduringa

reductioninforce,sheseizedthemomenttopivotintothegreeneconomy.“TherewasalotofdoomandgloomthatIwasreadingabout—wildfires,coastalshorelinesbeingdestroyed—andIwantedtobe

doingsomethingtohelp,”saysYaros,27.Shesearchedandnetworkedextensivelyformonths.Butwithoutskillsorexperienceinsustainability,shefound,“Itwasnoteasy.”

Eventuallysheenrolledin

OnePointFiveAcademy(orOPFAcademy)

,an8weekcohort-basedprogramwhereshegainedskillsindecarbonizationstrategy,lifecycleanalysis(assessingtheenvironmentalimpactofaproductorserviceovertime),andsustainabilityreporting.Sheheardaboutthelatesttrendsinclimateinnovation,financing,andstandardsfromguestspeakersincludingaclimatetechCEO,a

decarbonization-orientedinvestor,acarbonaccountingexpert,andtheexecutivedirectorofaclimatenonprofit.Andshecementedhernewknowledgethroughhands-onprojectssimulatingthetasksshemightdoonthejob—likeusingmockdatatobuildagreenhousegasaccountingmodel.

BypairinghernewgreenskillswithherexistingskillsinB2Bsoftwaresales,Yarostransitionedintothegreeneconomywhilecontinuingtoascendthecareerladder.Shenowsellsfleetandrouteoptimizationsolutionsdesignedtoimprovetheefficiencyofoperatingheavy-dutyvehicles,likesanitationtrucksandsnowplows.

softwareengineeringbootcampsthathaveproliferatedoverthepastdecade.Withinayearandahalfofits2023launch,ithasupskilled700peoplein45countries.Yeoh’sgoal:trainingandactivating100,000sustainabilityprofessionalsby2030.

Thesuccessofthegreentransitionrestsonthesuccessfultransformationoftheenergyindustry,whichisresponsibleforapproximately

75%ofglobal

greenhousegasemissions

.Governmentsaroundtheworldareprioritizingthesector,

earmarkingroughly$2trillionforrenewableenergy

since2020.

Theenergylandscapeisshifting,withfurtherdisruptionahead.Theworld

added50%morerenewablecapacityin2023thanin2022,with

EnergyAgencypredictsthat

Renewableenergycompaniesarealreadyreportingashortageofhighly

qualifiedtalent.Fossilfuelworkersareseeingtheirjobschange,ascompaniesexperimentwithrenewablesourcesandlookforwaystocutemissions.And

utilitiesareinurgentneedofworkerscapableofhelpingthemrevampaginginfrastructure,limitthe

risingcostsofweather-relateddamage

,switchto

anddecarbonizetheirownoperations.

Renewablesareontherise

Ineverycountrywestudied,moreworkersarejoiningtherenewableenergyindustrythanleavingit,astrongsignofemploymentgrowth.Likewise,

renewableenergyemploysagrowingshareofmanycountries’workforces,whilefossilfuelsemployadecliningshare.

InGermany,theshareoftheworkforceinrenewableenergygrew8.2%overthepastyear,whiletheshareinfossilfuelsdropped2.8%.InSweden,theshareoftheworkforceinrenewablesgrew11%whiletheshareinfossilfuelsdropped0.5%.IntheUK,theshareoftheworkforceinrenewablesgrew8.3%whiletheshareinfossilfuelsfell0.12%.

Insomecountries,theshareoftheworkforceinfossilfuelshasnotdeclinedbuthasgrownmoreslowlythantheshareinrenewables.InIndia,forexample,theshareoftheworkforceinrenewablesgrew5.5%whiletheshareinfossilfuelsgrew3.6%.InBrazil,theshareoftheworkforceinrenewablesgrew5.4%whiletheshareinfossilfuelsgrew2.1%.

IntheUS,hiringintherenewableenergysectorhasbeenoutpacingfossilfuelhiringasfarbackasJune2020.Hiringinrenewablesisnow120%higherthaninfossilfuels.Comparingspecificrenewableenergysources,weseethatthisincreaseisdrivenbysolar,wherehiringis97%higherthaninfossilfuels,

followedbybiomass(79%higher)andwind(42%higher).
