Agroupofresearchersanalyzeddatafrom9,971childrenparticipatinginalong-termstudy.Thesekidswere

enteringkindergartenintheUnitedStatesfrom2010to2011,andduringkindergarten,theirparentsreportedthe

frequencywithwhichtheirchildrenperformedhousework.Then,inthethirdgrade,thesechildrenweregivenan

investigationabouttheirinterestorabilityinstudies,socialrelationships,andlifesatisfaction,andtheycompleted

directschool-relatedassessmentsforreading,math,andscience.

Theresultsshowedthatthefrequencyofhouseworkinkindergartenwaspositivelyassociatedwithachild’s

ideaofsocial,academic,andlifesatisfactionabilitiesinthethirdgrade,independentofsex,familyincome,and

parenteducation.

Anotherstudylookedatchildren’shouseworkbehaviorandfoundthefollowing:Mostchildreninthestudy

spentsurprisinglylittletimehelpingaroundthehouseanddidfewertasksthantheyreportedininterviews.The

researchersfoundthatofferingthechildanallowanceinexchangefordoinghouseworkwasnotaneffective

encouragementandthatchildreninfamilieswithaccesstopaidhomehelptendedtobelesshelpfulthanchildrenin

familieswithout.Theauthorssuggestedthatwhilemostchildrenareawarethattheirworkingparentsneedhelp,in

somefamilies,changeableandunclearexpectationsfromparentsnegativelyaffectchildren’sparticipationin

householdwork.

bythetimetheyaresix,givethemrealhousework:Feedthedog,sweepthefloor,and,again,pickuptheclothes

andputthemaway.Eachday,thereshouldbeafewthingsteenagersdoaroundthehousethatbenefiteveryone.

Somewhatsurprisingly,outofthefourthinkingmeasuresmentionedabove,onlyonewasrelatedtodecreased

deathrisk:spokenfluency.Specifically,Ghisettaandhisteamfound“analmostnine-yearpredicteddifferencein

survivaltimebetweenthestudyparticipantswithhighorlowvaluesonspokenfluency.”

Thestudysupportsearlierresearchonthistopic.In2016,forexample,researchersfoundanassociation

betweenreadingandlivinglonger.Theyreportedthatparticipantswhoreadbookshada23-month“survival

advantage”comparedtonon-readers.

Buthowmuchreadingwasnecessaryforsuchanassociationtobeobserved?Theresearcherssaidjust30

minutesadaywassufficient.Buttheystressedthatthestrongestassociationinthisstudywasfoundforparticipants

whoprimarilyreadbooksasopposedtonewspapersandmagazines.

Whymightreadingfictionbringadvantagesnotseenwithreadingfactualmaterial?Onepossibilityisthatthe

laborrequiredtocreateafictionalworldinone’shead,alongwiththeeffortrequiredtokeeptrackofwhosaid
