Suddenly,astronggust(一陣)ofwindblew,andthekitestringbroke.Thekiteshook

wildlyandgotstuckinthebranchesofatalloaktree.Thereithung,itsleftwingbroken

anditscolorfulpapertorn.Tom’ssmilefadedinstantly.Hedashedtoreachit,butthetree

heightdefeatedhisefforts.Hesatontheground,tearstracingsilentpathsdownhischeeks,

andwhisperedindesperation,“It’sruined...Idon’twantitanymore.”

Hisfathercameovertohim,pattinghisbacksoftly.“Don’tbesosad,myboy,”he

saidgently,wipingthetearsaway.“Whatisbrokenisnotnecessarilylost.Wecanmendit

together,justaswemadeit.”Tomliftedhishead,eyesstillshiningwithtears.“Trust

me,”hisfathersmiled.“Withalittlepatience,itwillbebackinthesky.”

Onreturninghome,theysearchedthroughthedrawerforsupplies.Tomfoundsome

glueandapieceofbluepaperthatmatchedthekite’swings,whilehisfatherfetchedanew

rollofstrongkitestring.Withcare,Tomappliedgluetothebrokenwing,hissmallfingers

tremblingslightlyasheadjustedthetornpaper.Hisfatherreplacedtheolddamagedstring

withthenewone,andtoldTomakitewithamendedwingknewthewind’sstrength,soit

couldstandmorechallengeslater.“Kites”inlifewerethesame.Though“wind”sounded

terribleatfirst,“thebrokenkite”mightevenbecomestrongerifdealtwithcarefully.Tom

noddedslowly.Afterawhile,SkyDancerwasfullyrepaired.
