26、tofsandandgravelretainedonthe75-pm(No.200)sieve(5.2.1).Thesepredominantlysiltysoilsarequitecommoninoccurrence.Theirtexturevariesfromsandyloamstosiltyandclayeyloams.Withtheproperamountofmoisturepresent,theymayperformwellasapavementcomponent.However,theyfrequentlyhaveanaffinityforwaterandwillswellandl

27、osemuchoftheirstabilityunlessproperlycompactedanddrained.Moreover,theyaresubjecttofrostheave.Thesesoilsdonotdrainreadilyandmayabsorbwaterbycapillaryactionwithresultinglossinstrength.Thesiltyloamsareoftendifficulttocompactproperly.Carefulfieldcontrolofmoisturecontentandpneumatictiredrollersarenormall
