EarlyChristianChurchindicatesthepresenceofatleasttwosaintsnamedValentine.Some

scholars,however,saythattherewereasmanyassevensaintscreditedwiththenameofSaint

ValentineorValentinus,allofwhomlivedinthe3rdCenturyandapparentlydiedonthesameday.

GivenherearesomeofthemostpopularofalllegendsofSaintValentine:

SaintValentineofRome-1

Accordingtooneverypopularlegend,ValentinewasapriestinRomewholivedduringthe

reignofEmperorClaudiusILUnderhisregime,ClaudiusissaidtohaveengagedRomeinto

severalbloodybattles.Tostrengthenhisarmy,theEmperorcontinuouslyneededtorecruitsoldiers.

However,Claudiusfoundthatnotmanysoldierswerekeentojointhearmybecauseofattachment

withtheirwivesandfamilies.Inordertoseverthebondofattachment,Claudiuscancelledall

marriagesandengagementsinRome.Valentine-一aromanticatheartpriest,defiedthiscallous

decreeofClaudiusbysecretlyarrangingmarriagesofyoungmenandwomen.WhenValentine's

defiancewasdiscoveredbytheEmperor,hewasbrutallybeatenupandputtodeathonFebruary

14,about270AD.

Forhismartyrdomanddedicationforthecause,ValentinewasnamedaSaintafterhisdeath.

ByMiddleAges,SaintValentinebecamepopularasthepatronsaintofloveandloversinEngland

andFrancetotheextentthatPopeGelasiusdeclaredFebruary14asValentine'sDayon498AD

andputanendtopagancelebrations.Thus,SaintValentine'smartyrdomdaybecameanoccasion

tocelebratelove.

SaintValentineofRome-II

AnotherfamouslegendonSaintValentinestatesValentinewasanearlyChristianinRome

whowasverypopularamongstchildren.ButduringthetimewhenValentinelived,Romanregime

wasnotinfavourofChristianityanditevenpersecutedChristianstomakeRomefreeofthe

followersofChristianity.Inspiteofthisstrictlaw,Valentinecontinuedtopracticehisfaithand

refusedtoworshipRomanGods.ThisenragedEmperorClaudiusIIandheputValentineinto

prison.

Valentineissaidtohavespentayearinrigorousimprisonmentduringwhichhewasmisseda

lotbychildren.Theybegantotosslovingnotesandflowersbetweenthebarsofhiscellwindow.

Toanextent,thislegendmayexplainthetraditionofexchangingnotesandflowersonValentine's

Day.

SomescholarsbelievethatduringhisstayinprisonValentinemadefriendswithjailer'sblind

daughterwhoattimesbroughttohimnotesandflowersfromchildren.Whenever,possible

Valentinealsorepliedtothenotes.Daysbeforehisexecution,Valentineprayedforthejailer's

daughterandsheregainedhersight.Beforehisdeath,Valentineisalsosaidtohavewrittena

farewellnoteforthejailer'sdaughterandsignedit"FromYourValentine^^.Thisexpressionis

populareventilldate.

SomescholarsbelievethatValentinewaskilledbecausehetriedtohelpChristiansescape

fromtheRomanprisonastheywerebeingtorturedandbeaten.Yetanothersetofscholarssay

EmperorClaudiusIIwasimpressedbyValentine'skindnessandgoodbehavior.Heevenstated

thatValentinecouldbefreedifheagreedtoworshipRomanGods.Valentinenotjustrefusedit,he

eventriedtoconvertEmperortoChristianity.ThismadeClaudiusveryangryandheorderedhis

execution.ValentinewasbeheadedonFebruary14.
