Hydrozinciteandhydrocerussitearetwoofthemostcommonzincandleadmineralsthatoftenoccurtogether.However,in1958,anewmineralwasdiscoveredinalead-zinc-silverdepositinMontana,whichwaslaternamedhydroxylbastn?site-(Ce).Thismineralisacomplexrareearthandaluminumhydroxycarbonatethatcontainscerium(Ce),lanthanum(La),neodymium(Nd),andpraseodymium(Pr).Thesimilaritiesbetweenhydrozincite,hydrocerussite,andhydroxylbastn?site-(Ce)serveasanimportantclueforthediscoveryofanothermineralknownashydroxylbastn?site-(Nd).Thismineralisarareearthandaluminumhydroxycarbonatethatcontainsneodymium.Thispaperwilldiscussthediscoveryandstudyofhydroxylbastn?site-(Nd).

Discovery

Hydroxylbastn?site-(Nd)wasdiscoveredintheLongnanRareEarthDepositinChinain1982.ThisdepositislocatedintheGansuProvince,whichisknownforitsrichanddiversemineralresources.Themineralwasfirstdescribedin1984byRenYoujieandLiLimin,whowereconductingastudyofrareearthmineralsinthearea.Theresearchersinitiallymistookhydroxylbastn?site-(Nd)forbastn?siteduetotheirsimilarcrystalstructure,butthedistinctdifferencesinchemicalcompositionandphysicalpropertiesultimatelyidentifieditasaseparatemineral.
