waswhenthelayingofatelegraphcablefromEuropetoAmericawas
proposed.Theengineershadtoknowthedepthprofileoftherouteto
estimatethelengthofcablethathadtobemanufactured.
ItwastoMauryoftheUSNavythattheAtlanticTelegraphCompany
turned,in1853,forinformationonthismatter.Inthe1840s,Mauryhad
beenresponsibleforencouragingvoyagesduringwhichsoundingswere
takentoinvestigatethedepthsoftheNorthAtlanticandPacificOceans.
Later,someofhisfindingsarousedmuchpopularinterestinhisbookThe
PhysicalGeographyoftheSea.
Thecablewaslaid,butnotuntil1866wastheconnectionmade
permanentandreliable.Attheearlyattempts,thecablefailedandwhenit
wastakenoutforrepairsitwasfoundtobecoveredinlivinggrowths,a
factwhichdefiedcontemporaryscientificopinionthattherewasnolifein
thedeeperpartsofthesea.
Withinafewyearsoceanographywasunderway.In1872Thomsonleda
scientificexpedition,whichlastedfouryearsandbroughthome
