1March-30April15NoAdditionalMaterialsareREADTHESEINSTRUCTIONSEachcandidate’sSpeakingTestmustconsistofthefollowingthreePartOneofthetestwillbetworoleys.Theroleysituationsaresetoutonpages13-18ofthisbookletandmustbefollowedcarefullybytheExaminer.YoumustensurethatyouyyourroleasprescribedbyCIEinorderthatcandidatesaregiventheopportunitytoattemptalltasks.Youmustnotcreateextratasks.Candidatesshouldstudythesituationforfifteenminutesandthenbepreparedtoacttherolesassignedtothemandrespondtothepartsyedbyyou.PartTwoofthetestwillstartwithapresentationbythecandidateonatopicofhis/herchoice.Youmustallowthecandidatetospeakfor1-2minutesonhis/herpreparedtopicandthenfollowthisupwithspecificspontaneousquestionsrelatedtothetopic.Thissectionofthetestshouldlastaboutfiveminutesintotal.PartThreeofthetestwillbeaconversationofamoregeneralnatureandshouldlastaboutfiveBothroleysandconversationsshouldbemarkedbytheCentreaccordingtotheinstructionsandasamplerecordedforexternalmoderation. Eachcandidateroleycardcontainstworolewhichtheroleycardsappearinthisbooklet.ys.ThelistbelowgivesdetailsofthepagesCARDAPageBPageCARDAPageBPageCARDAPageBPageCARDAPageBPageCARDAPageBPageCARDAPageBPageCARDAPageBPageCARDAPageBPageCARDAPageBPageADMINISTRATIVEThespeakingteststakeceinthetwo-threemonthsbeforethemainexaminationperiod,iebetween1Marchand30AprilfortheJuneexamination.EachCentredecidesonaconvenientperiodwithinthesedatesforitsspeakingtests.ItisimportantthatdatesgivenforthecompletionofthespeakingtestsandthedespatchofrecordingsandmarksheetstoCIE(seeparagraph6)areadheredtoinordertoallowsufficienttimeformoderation.Intheinterestsofstandardisationtherewillbeonlyoneteacher/examinerperCentre.EachCentreselectsitsownteacher/examiner.ThisisnormallyateacherfromwithintheLanguagesDepartment,butcouldbesomeonelocalfromoutsidetheCentre.CIEisnotresponsibleforanyfeesagreed.WhereaCentrewishestouseadditionalteacher/examinersbecauseithasalargenumberofcandidates,permissiontodosomustbesoughtfromtheIGCSELanguagesOfficerwellbeforethestartofeachoralexaminationperiod.Ifpermissionisgiventousemorethanoneteacher/examiner,internalmoderationmusttakeceattheCentretoensurethatallitsSpeakingtestsaremarkedtothesamestandard.Thesampleshouldincludetheworkofeachteacher/examinerandanOralExaminationSummaryMarkSheetshouldbesubmittedforeachteacher/examiner,withcandidatenamesandnumbersclearlyentered.3testmaterialsaredespatchedapproximaytwo-threeweeksbeforetheassessmentperiod.TheseshouldbeopenedfourworkingdaysbeforetheCentre’sassessmentstartsandstudiedcarefullybytheteacher/examinerbeforeconductinghis/herfirsttests.Teacher/examinerswhohavepreparedtheirownrolesfullyandareconfidentinwhattheyarengarebetterabletohelpcandidateswhoexperienceanydifficulty.Oncethematerialshavebeenopened,thetestsmustbecompletedassoonasisrealisticallypossible.Afterthetestshavebeencompleted,thematerialsremainandmustbekeptinasecurecebytheCentreuntiltheendoftheexaminationperiod.Eachteacher/examinerwillberequiredtorecordasampleofcandidatesfromeachCentreatwhichheorsheexamines.Theteacher/examinerisaskedtoselectandrecordsixcandidates,coveringaswidearangeofabilityaspossible.Thecandidatesselectedshouldbespreadasevenlyaspossibleacrosstherangeofmarks(2good,2middling,2weak):ifthereisalargerangeofmarks(eg40-90),teacher/examinersshouldbeespeciallycarefultosendtestsspreadacrosstherange,notjustthetop2,middle2andbottom2.Thiswillenablethemoderatortocheckaccuraythestandardofassessment.Therecordingshouldbecarriedoutinaccordancewiththeinstructionsheaded“RecordingofCandidates”(seeparagraph8).TherecordingmustbesenttoCIEtogetherwiththemoderatorcopyofthecompletedMS1andacopyofthecompletedOralExaminationSummaryMarkSheet(seeparagraphs5and6).TwotypesofmarksheetareOnemarksheet(theOralExaminationSummaryMarkSheet(providedinthesyllabus))isintendedasaworking ,onwhichthemarksforeachsectionofthetestaretobeenteredindetailasspecifiedintheMarkingInstructions.BeverycarefultocheckallThetotalmarksshouldthenbetransferredtotheInternalAssessmentMarkSheetDespatchandreturnofmarksheetsandrecordedMarksheetsandrecordingsaretobereturnedtoCIEonceallthespeakingtestshavebeencompleted.ThedeadlineforreceiptbyCIEoftheseitemsis15MayfortheJuneexamination.Donotwaituntiltheendoftheassessmentperiodbeforedespatching TheBoardcopyofthecompletedInternalAssessmentMarkSheet(MS1)mustbereturnedtoCIEintheseparateenvelopeprovided.(ii)TheModeratorcopyofthecompletedInternalAssessmentMarkSheet(MS1),acopyofthecompletedOralExaminationSummaryMarkSheetandtherecordedsamplemustbesent,toarriveatCIEbynolaterthan15MayfortheJuneexamination.CopiesofbothtypesofmarksheetaretoberetainedbytheCentreincaseofpostallossesordelays.ArrangementsfortheExaminationconditionsmustprevailintheareawheretheexaminationtakesce,includingthespacesetasideforacandidatetopreparetheroleysituations.Adequatesupervisionmustbeprovidedtoensurethateachcandidatecanstudyaloneandinsilenceandthatcandidatesleavingtheinterviewroomdonotcommunicatewiththosewaitingtoenter.Candidatesarenotallowedtobringanynotesforuseduringtheirpreparationtime.Noraretheyallowedtomakenotes.RequestsforspecialconsiderationforcandidateswithspecificproblemsmustbemadeonSpecialConsiderationforms.Candidatesmustbeexaminedsingly.Noother shouldbepresentduringtheexaminationwiththeexceptionofanotherteacher/examiner,oranOfficerfromCIE.Asteacher/examineryoushouldbepositionedsothatyouwillbefacingthecandidateswhentheyentertheroom,withatablebetweenyouandthecandidates.Pleasedonotallowcandidatestositinapositionwheretheycanseewhatyouarewritingonthemarksheetsasthiscanbedistracting.Inordertoputcandidatesattheirease,swhentheyentertheroom,andindicatewheretheyshouldsit.Agoodteacher/examinerwillusuallysendacandidateoutoftheinterviewsmiling,nomatterhowgoodorbadtheperformancehasbeen.Avoid,however,theuseofexpressionssuchas“verygood”,whichacandidatemayinterpretasacommentonPleasedonotsmokeinthepresenceofcandidates.Smokersshouldarrangeforbreaksinthetimetableasnecessary,andtosmokeelsewherethanintheinterviewroom. mendations:donotwalkaboutordistractcandidatesinanyway(egbydoodlingorfiddlingwithpapers,etc);alwaysappearinterested,eveninmundanematters;nevershowunduesurprise,impatienceormockery;nevercorrectacandidate.RecordingofCentresshouldensurewellinadvanceofthetestthatasuitablyquiet–and,ifpossible,small–roomwillbeavailableandthattheirrecordingequipmentisingoodorder.Roomswhicharetooclosetoayground,recreationroomornoisyclassroomaretobeavoided.Itisessentialthatunnecessarybackgroundnoiseshouldbeexcluded.CassetterecordersmustbeusedandCentresareresponsibleforensuringthegoodqualityofrecordings.Thecassetterecorderandthecassette(s)tobeusedshouldbetestedinsitusometimebeforetheactualtest,ideallywithoneofthecandidates.Itisessentialthatnewunrecordedcassettesareused.ThesewillbedbyCIE.Wherepossible,itisadvisabletouseacassetterecorderwithexternalmicrophonessothatseparatemicrophonescanbeusedforthecandidateandtheteacher/examiner.Ifonlyonemicrophoneisbeingused,itshouldbecedfacingthecandidate.Withasoftly-spokencandidatethemicrophoneshouldbecednearertothecandidatebeforethestartofthetest.Adjustmentstothevolumecontrolduringanexaminationshouldnormallybeavoided.TherecordingshouldbeginatthestartofSide1andcareshouldbetakentoavoidlonggapsandextraneousnoise.Bothsidesofeachcassetteshouldbeusedbeforebeginninganewcassette.Itishelpfulif,attheendofexaminingoneachsideofacassette,theteacher/examinerstates“Nofurtherrecordingsonthisside”.Eachcassetteshouldbeintroducedbytheteacher/examiner,asfollows:“CentreNumberegHK215CentreNameegKing’sExaminationNumber0547ExaminationNameIGCSEMandarinNameofExamineregMrRPetersDateegMarch2nd2009”Eachcandidateshouldbeintroducedbytheteacher/examiner,asfollows:“CandidateNumbereg047CandidateNameegWilliam yCardegNumberAttheendofthesample,pleasestate“EndofOnceatesthasbegun,thecassetteshouldrunwithoutinterruption.Onnoaccountshouldyoustopandre-startthecassetteduringatest.Thecontentsofeachcassetteshouldbeclearlylabelled.Beforethecassetteisdespatched,spotchecksmustbemadetoensurethateverycandidateisclearlyaudible.CassettesshouldthenberewoundtothestartofSide1.STRUCTUREOFTHETest1: ys(about5minutes)30Eachcandidatewillbeexaminedintworoleysituationsselectedatrandombytheteacher/examinerfromthecardsd.Eachcardwillcontaintwosituations,bothofwhichwillbeAnumberofalternativecardsared,andtheseshouldbeusedatrandomduringeachsessionofexamining.Havinggiventhefirstcandidate15minutestopreparehis/hertwosituations,youshouldhandadifferentcardtothesecondcandidatetopreparewhileyouexaminethefirstcandidate.Candidatesmaynotmakewrittennotesduringtheirpreparationtime.Theymaytaketheroleycardtheyhavepreparedintotheexaminationroom.However,theymaynottaketheroleycardawaywiththemoncetheexaminationisover.Unlessthereareexceptionalcircumstances(egspeechimpediments),eachsituationshouldbecarriedoutinfull.Ifthecandidatecannothandleoneofthetasksset,theteacher/examinershouldnotleavetoolongapausebutshouldleadthecandidateontothenexttask.Shouldacandidatemissoutatask,thentrytoguidehim/herbacktoit,inasnaturalawayaspossible.ItdoesnotmattertoModeratorsthatthismayleadtotasksoccurringinadifferentorder,aslongastheyareallattempted.Therolesofthecandidateandteacher/examinerareindicatedonthecards.Teacher/examinersareaskedtopreparethesituationscarefullysothatthecandidate’stasksfollowonnaturallyfromtheteacher/examiner’sresponse.Usually,theteacher/examinerhastoinitiatethedialogue.Theteacher/examineristoassumetheroleofawell-disposednativespeakerwithnoknowledgeofthecandidate’sfirstlanguage.Formarkscheme,seeTableAoftheMarkingTest2:Topic(prepared)Conversation(about5minutes)30Thissectionisintendedtobeaconversationbetweentheteacher/examinerandthecandidateononetopicofthecandidate’schoice.Suitablesubjectsmightbe,forexample:‘Schoollife’,‘Hobbiesandpastimes’(generalorspecific),‘Mycountry’,‘Lifeinanothercountry’,‘Myambitions’,‘Holidays’.Theseareonlyexamples:candidatesshouldbeencouragedtochooseatopicinwhichtheyhave alinterest.Topicsdealingwithpoliticsorsocialandeconomicissuesareambitiousforthislevelofachievementandmaydisadvantagecandidatesiftheydonotpossessthelinguisticskillsandmaturityofideaswhichsuchtopicsnecessitate.CandidatesshouldbeencouragedtopreparedifferenttopicswithinaCentreandshouldnotbeallowedtopresent‘Myself’or‘Mylife’astopicsasthesecanetoogeneralandcanoftenpre-empttheGeneral(unprepared)ConversationThetopicmustbepreparedbycandidatesinadvance,butmustnotbepre-learntanddeliveredasamonologue.Theteacher/examinershouldallowthecandidatetospeakontheirchoiceoftopicforonetotwominutesuninterruptedandthenfollowthisupwithspecificquestionsonthetopic.Whereacandidatehasbeentalkingfortwominutesandshowsnosignoffinishingtheirinitialexposition,theteacher/examinermustinterruptandaskspecificquestions.Candidateswillhavepreparedtheirtopic,butmustnotbeallowedtodeliveraseriesofobviouslypreparedrepliesinthediscussionthatfollowstheirpresentation.Itistheextenttowhichcandidatescanmanipulatetheirpreparedmaterialaccordingtotheneedsoftheteacher/examinerthatdeterminestheirmarks.Inordertoextendthecandidateasfaraspossible,theteacherexaminershouldprobe,explore,askforexnations,enlargements,descriptions(how?when?why?lmeabitmoreabout...etc).Candidatesmayuseillustrativematerial,egphotographs,ifthisseemsappropriatetotheirtopic,butarenotallowedtousewrittennotesofanykind.Formarkscheme,seeTableBoftheMarkingTest3:General(unprepared)Conversation(about5minutes)30Youshouldnormallyallowthestipulatedlengthoftimeforeachcandidate.Whilstsomecandidatesmaydryupafterafewminutes,youshouldperseverewiththeconversation(egbycompletechangesofsubject),sothatcandidatesaregiveneveryopportunitytodothemselvesjustice.Thediscussionofthetopicwillhavepavedthewayfortheunpreparedconversation.Youshouldstartoutfromanypointofinterestnotedearlier,oraskgeneralquestionsrelatingtothecandidate’severydaylife,school(subjects,numberofperiods,times,games,etc),home,town,journeytoandfromschool,time(evenings,weekends),holidays,hobbies.Allcandidatescanreasonablybeexpectedtohavethecommandofvocabularyandidiomnecessaryforthis.YoushouldaimtocoveratleasttwoorthreeoftheDefinedContentTopicsinthissectionofthetest(thesearelistedintheCurriculumContentsectionofthesyllabus).Precisefactualinformationorknowledgeisnotrequired,andcandidatesshouldnotbepenalisedforlackofsuchknowledge.Bereadytopassonquicklytoanothersubjectifcandidatesareobviouslyoutoftheirdepth.Takecaretoavoidquestionswhichmightcauseembarrassment,egwhereacandidatehasonlyoneparent.(Centresarerequestedtosupplysuchinformationtotheteacher/examinerinadvance.)Candidatesshouldbeexpectedtogivenaturalrepliestoquestions;theiranswersneednotthereforebeintheformofcompletesentences.Youshouldtakecaretoavoidquestionsinvitingsimply“yes”or“no”byusingavarietyofinterrogatives,egwhen?how?why?howmany?howlong?withwhom?withwhat?etc.Questionsshouldbeadjustedtothecandidate’sability.Candidatesshouldbepromptedandencouragedwherenecessaryandlongsilencesshouldbeavoided.Ontheotherhand,donotinterruptacandidateunlessyouaresurethatheorshecannotcompletetheanswer.Incorrectanswersshouldneverbecorrected,noranswersdwhennonearegiven.Questionsshouldberephrased(ratherthanrepeated)inanattempttomaintainthedialogue.Theuseofvocabularyorphrasesfromthecandidate’sfirstlanguageshouldbeavoided,exceptinthecaseofparticularinstitutions,egnamesofexaminations,typesofschool,etc.Bewareoftalkingtoomuchandgivingthecandidatecreditforwhatyouhaveinfactsaidyourself.Theonusisonthecandidatetoshowthatheorshecanconverseadequayinthelanguage,butatthesametimeitisuptoyoutomakesurethatthecandidateisgiveneveryopportunitytodosobyfollowingupanyopeninggiven.Formarkscheme,seeTableBoftheMarkingTest4:Impression10Attheendofthetestyoushouldmakeanassessmentofthecandidate’spronunciation,accentandfluency,followingtheguidelinesgivenintheMarkingInstructions.Whileyoumayusetheopportunityofthecandidate’sintroductiontothetopictoassessthesefactors,yourfinalassessmentmustbebasedonthecandidate’soverallperformance.Exceptionalperformanceintheroleysituations(ieoneinwhichafluidandnaturalconversationdevelops)shouldberewardedbyahighimpressionmark.Formarkscheme,seeTableCoftheMarkingMARKINGUsetheOralExaminationSummaryMarkTest1 ummarkswithinanysingleThegeneralapproachisapositiveoneandyoushouldawardmarksbasedonwhatthecandidatecandoratherthandeductingmarksforerrors.Aboveallelse,pleasebeconsistentinyourmarking.Ifyouareunsureofthemarktoaward,erronthesideofgenerosity.Themoderationprocessallowsforadjustmentstobemadetoconsistentlyharshorconsistentlygenerousmarking.TABLEA–Test1:Roleys(30Thispartoftheexaminationisprimarilyatestofthecandidate’sabilitytocommunicateneeds,information,requests,etc,inusiblylife-likesituations.Inligibilityisthereforeofgreaterimportancethangrticalorsyntacticaccuracy.However,verbalcommunicationonlywillbeassessed:creditwillnotbegivenforgestures,facialexpressionsorothernon-verbalformsofcommunication.Theuseofappropriateregisterandcorrectidiomwillberewarded.Theteacher/examinerwillythepartofapatientandwell-disposedforeignerwithnoknowledgeofthecandidate’sfirstlanguage.Eachofthetentaskstobeperformedintheexaminationwillbeassessedonthescalebelow.Candidateswillberequiredtogivenaturalresponses,notnecessarilyintheformof“sentences”:shortanswers,ifappropriatetothetask,canbeawarded3marks.MarksareawardedasAnaccurateutncewhichnotonlyconveysthemeaningbutwhichisexpressedinnativeidiomandappropriateregister.Minorerrorsaretolerated.Theutnceisinligibleandthetaskofcommunicationisachieved.3Thelanguageusedisnotnecessarilythemostappropriatetothesituationandmaycontaininaccuracieswhichdonotobscurethemeaning.2Communicationofsomemeaningisachieved,butthenativespeakerwouldfindthemessageambiguousor 1Theutnceisuninligibletothenative0NB1 Teacher/examinersareremindedthatiftherearetwoelementsinataskandonlyoneiscompleted,thena umofonemarkonlymaybeawarded.Whenawardingmarks,teacher/examinersshouldstartatthebottomofthemarkschemeandworkupwards:0=nothingofworth1=partial2=allpointscommunicated–butwithsomelinguisticinaccuracies–meaning3=meaningclearand yShortutnces,ifappropriate,canbeworththreemarks–especiallytruein yScale(a)Comprehension/responsiveness.Thisassessesthecandidate’sresponseintermsofcomprehensionoftheteacher/examiner,immediacyofreaction/response,fluencyofresponse,presentationofmaterialinthetopic.Scale(b)Thisassessesthelinguisticcontentofthecandidate’sanswersintermsofthecomplexity,accuracyandrangeofstructures,vocabularyandidiom.NBThistableisusedforTests2ANDNotnecessarilyofnativespeakerThehighestleveltobeexpectedofthebestIGCSE14-VeryGenerallyunderstandsquestionsfirsttime,butmayrequireoccasionalre-phrasing.Canrespondsatisfactorilytobothstraightforwardandunexpectedquestions.Widerangeofmostlyaccuratestructures,vocabularyand12-Hasnodifficultywithstraightforwardquestionsandrespondsfairlywelltounexpe
