Suchstoriessetusthinking,wonderingwhatweshoulddounder

similarcircumstances.Whatevents,whatexperiences,what

associationsshouldwecrowdintothoselasthoursasmortal

beings,whatregrets?

SometimesIhavethoughtitwouldbeanexcellentruletolive

eachdayasifweshoulddietomorrow.Suchanattitudewould

emphasizesharplythevaluesoflife.Weshouldliveeachday

withgentleness,vigorandakeennessofappreciationwhichare

oftenlostwhentimestretchesbeforeusintheconstant

panoramaofmoredaysandmonthsandyearstocome.There

arethose,ofcourse,whowouldadopttheEpicureanmottoof

“Eat,drink,andbemerry”.Butmostpeoplewouldbechastened

bythecertaintyofimpendingdeath.

Instoriesthedoomedheroisusuallysavedatthelastminuteby

somestrokeoffortune,butalmostalwayshissenseofvaluesis

changed.Hebecomesmoreappreciativeofthemeaningoflife

anditspermanentspiritualvalues.Ithasoftenbeennotedthat

thosewholive,orhavelived,intheshadowofdeathbringa

mellowsweetnesstoeverythingtheydo.

Mostofus,however,takelifeforgranted.Weknowthatoneday

wemustdie,butusuallywepicturethatdayasfarinthefuture.

Whenweareinbuoyanthealth,deathisallbutunimaginable.

Weseldomthinkofit.Thedaysstretchoutinanendlessvista.

Sowegoaboutourpettytasks,hardlyawareofourlistless

attitudetowardlife.

Thesamelethargy,Iamafraid,characterizestheuseofallour

facultiesandsenses.Onlythedeafappreciatehearing,onlythe

blindrealizethemanifoldblessingsthatlieinsight.Particularly

doesthisobservationapplytothosewhohavelostsightand

hearinginadultlife.Butthosewhohaveneversuffered

impairmentofsightorhearingseldommakethefullestuseof

decay,butbookssurvive.Timeisofnoaccountwithgreat

thoughts,whichareasfreshtodayaswhentheyfirstpassed

throughtheirauthor'sminds,agesago.Whatwasthensaidand

thoughtstillspeakstousasvividlyaseverfromtheprintedpage.

Theonlyeffectoftimehavebeentosiftoutthebadproducts;for

nothinginliteraturecanlongsurviveebutwhatisreallygood.

Booksintroduceusintothebestsociety;theybringusintothe

Thereisastrongviewthatholdsthatsuccessisamyth,and

ambitionthereforeasham.Doesthismeanthatsuccessdoesnot

reallyexist?Thatachievementisatbottomempty?Thatthe

effortsofmenandwomenareofnosignificancealongsidethe

forceofmovementsandeventsnownotallsuccess,obviously,is

worthesteeming,norallambitionworthcultivating.Whichare

andwhicharenotissomethingonesoonenoughlearnsonone's

own.Buteventhemostcynicalsecretlyadmitthatsuccessexists;

thatachievementcountsforagreatdeal;andthatthetruemyth

isthattheactionsofmenandwomenareuseless.Tobelieve

otherwiseistotakeonapointofviewthatislikelytobe

deranging.Itis,initsimplications,toremoveallmotivesfor

competence,interestinattainment,andregardforposterity.

Wedonotchoosetobeborn.Wedonotchooseourparents.We

donotchooseourhistoricalepoch,thecountryofourbirth,or

theimmediatecircumstancesofourupbringing.Wedonot,most

ofus,choosetodie;nordowechoosethetimeorconditionsof

ourdeath.Butwithinallthisrealmofchoicelessness,wedo
