Hedid,butIremainedwide-awake.Iwaiteduntilhisbreathingevened,andthenslowlycreptout

ofbedandintothekitchen.Itwas6:00a.m.,andIhadtobeupinanhouranyway,soIputonsome

coffee.

Asitbrewed,Ithoughtaboutwhathadawokenme.Thefirsttimeithappened,Iimmediately

consultedthedreambookthatIkeptonmynighttable,butitonlygavemeanambiguous

interpretationofthedifferentimagesIwasabletoremember.

Itmadenosense.Iwastwenty-one,marriedayear,andwehadnochildren.Norwerewe

planningtobecomeparentsanytimesoon,ifatall.Welikedkids,butwewerehappythewaywe

were—freetogowherewewantedatamomenfsnotice.Weenjoyedotherpeople'schildren,but

wereinnohurrytohaveourown.Maybewe'dchangeourmindsoneday,butrightthentherewas

noreasonforanyonetocallme“Mummy"-letaloneanapparitionthatcametomeinmysleep.

Thatlittleboyinvadedmydreamsseveralmoretimesoverthenextfewyears,alwayswearing

identicalclothes.Nothingeverchanged-includingthathorrificaccident.EverytimeIwokeup

fromit,Iwasequallypuzzledanddisturbed,butforsomeinexplicablereasonIkeptittomyself,

perhapsinthehopethatitmightenddifferentlyonedayorstopaltogether.

Eventually,likemostcouples,myhusbandandImatured.Wesettleddownandbeganthinking

aboutourfutureinsteadoflivingeverydayasifitwasourlast.Attheageoftwenty-seven,Ifound

myselfyearningforababy.Luckily,Donfeltthesameway,andaboutayearlater,Davidcompleted

ourlittlefamily.

Ienjoyedeverysecondofmotherhood,marvelingathowIcouldhaveeverthoughtmylifewas

completewithoutachild.Ireveledinallmyson'sstages,frombeinghelplessandreliantonmefor

everything,tohisfirststepsandtheindependencethatmilestonebroughtwithit.Ashebeganto
