s5AmessagefromMatsGranryd,GSMADirectorGeneralSixyearshavepassedsincethemobileindustrysteppedforwardandcommittedtoall17SustainableDevelopmentGoals(SDGs).Everyyearsince,wehaveproducedthisreporttoupdateonprogress,highlightsuccessesandidentifyareasthatrequireevenmoreconsiderableeffort.Astheworldadaptstoandemergesfromtheglobalpandemic,keepingthepromiseoftheSDGshasneverbeenmorecritical.BeforetheCovid-19outbreak,theworldwasnotontracktomeetthe2030goals.Althoughtherehadbeensigni?cantimprovementsinareassuchasreducingpovertyandgenderequality,progressonothergoalshadstalledand,insomecases,reversed.Whilethefulleffectofthepandemicisnotyetknown,itisclearthatCovid-19hassetusevenfurtherbackonachievingthe“world’sto-dolist.”billionsofpeoplereliedonmobiletechnologyforeveryaspectoftheirday-to-daylives.Mobileconnectivitybecamethelifelinekeepingsocietiesmovingaswesuddenlyturnedonlineforeverythingfromeducationtohealthcare.Thankstocontinuedinvestmentininfrastructureandtheresilienceofnetworks,themobileindustrycontinuestoachieveitshighestimpactonSDG9:Industry,InnovationandImpact.Despitethisachievement,thepandemicexposedandincreasedsomeofthegreatestinequalities.Ourdigitaldividesarestillthere:peoplelackingdigitalskills,unconnectedruralcommunities,SMEsnotbeingabletotransformdigitally.RecentreportingbytheUNandtheWorldBankshowthatmorepeoplehavebeenpushedintoextremepoverty,genderinequalitieshavebeenexacerbatedandtheclimatecrisiscontinuestoworsen.TheSDGshaveneverbeenmoreimportant.Theworldhasshowntheingenuityanddrivethatitiscapableofoverthepasttwoyears.Aswepausetore?ectonourprogresssofar,wemustlooktothemammothtasksahead.Asanindustry,wemustcontinuetoconnecttheunconnectedandwemustenableotherindustriestorealisetheirmaximumeffectontheSDGs.Wecallonworldleaders,thepublicandprivatesectortoworktogethertoIn2020,theglobalaverageSDGindexscoredecreasedforthe?rsttimesincetheadoptionoftheSDGsin2015.IfwewanttoachievetheSDGtargetsby2030,anextraordinaryglobaleffortwillberequiredbyeveryone–includinggovernments,theprivatesectorandindividuals.TheglobalefforttodevelopvaccinesforCovid-19atunprecedentedspeedshowswhathumanbeingsarecapableofwhenweworktogethertowardacommongoal.accelerateourprogresstowardsachievingtheSDGs.Despitethedif?cultiesofthelast18months,themobileindustryhascontinuedtoincreaseitsimpactacrosseverySDGand,althoughtheindustry’sprogresssloweddownduetothecrisis,thepandemichighlightedthevitalrolethatmobileplaysinpeople’slives.Aroundtheworld,MatsGranrydGSMADirectorGeneral6AmessagefromStephaneRichard,CEOOrange,ChairmanGSMAAsaleaderofthemobileindustry,I?rmlybelievethatoursectorisattheheartofthesolutionsthatwillandmustbedesignedtotacklesomeofsociety’sgreatestchallengesinthecomingyears.Wearefacinganumberofnewissues:Howcanwecontributetoequalityandsocialprogress,whentrustinoursocietyisofteneroded?Overcomingourdigitaldividesremainapriority.Mobileoperatorscontinuetodeploy,extendandupgradenetworks.Therearenowlessthan500millionpeoplewithno3Gor4Gnetworkcoverage.However,3billionpeopleareleftbehind.Thismeansthattheyhavethecoverage,butdonotbene?tfromit–whetherthroughalackofdigitalskills,?nancialmeansorlocallyadaptedservices.Howdoweensureourservicesdonotexcludethemostvulnerable,butinsteadcanbeusedtoreducesocialandgeographicalinequalities?Howdowecollectivelyacttoreduceclimatechange?Wehavethechancetobeanindustrythathassupporteddevelopmentandhasbuilttrustforoveracentury.Thebene?tsoftechnologicalprogressforhumanitydependnotonthetechnology,butonwhatwedowithit.ThisiswhyeachyearweareproudtoreviewourcollectivecorporateprogressontheSDGsandtosharewhatactionsareneededtodeliverthe2030agenda.Yet,whenwesucceedinconnectingpeople,weincreaseequality,prosperityandwell-being.With30millionemployees,2.7trillionCAPEXsince2000,morethan5billionpeopleusingamobilephoneand25billionIoTconnectionsacrosstheworld,themobileindustryhasshownthatithasthepowerandthescaletomakeameaningfuldifference.Wewereoneofthe?rstindustriestojointheUnitedNationsSustainableDevelopmentGoalsandtodaywecontinuetodeliveronthispromise.Duringthepandemicwelearnthowessentialmobileconnectivityisforourresilienceandhowmuchweareabletopushtheboundaries,usingourabilitiesandresourcestokeeptheworldconnected.Throughournetworks,peoplecanaccesseducationevenwhentheycan’tgotoschool.Throughournetworks,peopleareinformedabouthealth,protectionmeasuresandemergencysituations.StèphaneRichardChairmanandCEOOrange,Throughournetworks,peoplecancontinuetoaccesscountlessservices,fromretailorpublicservicestomobilebanking.Theycanalsocontinuetoworkandearnanincome.GSMAChairman7801Introductionandkey?ndings92021MobileIndustryImpactReport:SustainableDevelopmentGoals01.Introductionandkey?ndings10Acrosstheworld,manycountriesarerecoveringfromadevastatingpublichealthandeconomiccrisis,whileothersarestillexperiencingit.Asof8September2021,therehadbeenover220millioncon?rmedCovid-19casesgloballyandmorethan4.5?millioncon?rmeddeaths.1Tomitigatethespreadofthevirusandavoidoverwhelmingpublichealthsystems,lockdownrestrictionsandsocialdistancingmeasureshavebeenputinplace.However,thesubsequenteconomicandsocialimpactshavebeensevere.In2020,255millionfull-timejobswerelost,anadditional119–124?millionpeoplewerepushedintoextremepovertyand101millionchildrenfellbelowtheminimumreadingpro?ciencylevelamidwidespreadschoolclosures.2Furthermore,despitetheslowdownineconomicactivityandglobaltravelrestrictions,thepandemichasdonelittletomitigatetheongoingclimatecrisis.3Lookingforward,theglobaleconomyissettoexpandby5.6%in2021—itsstrongestpost-recessionpacein80years.4However,therecoveryissettobeunevenandlargelyre?ectssharpreboundsinsomemajoreconomies.Inmanylow-andmiddle-incomecountries(LMICs)theoutlookislesspositive,asobstaclestovaccinationcontinuetoweighonsocialandeconomicactivity.Asaresult,theserioushealth,economicandsocialconsequencesofthepandemicarelikelytocontinue,underminingdecadesofdevelopmentefforts.1JohnsHopkinsCSSE.Note:TheCSSEstatesthatitsnumbersrelyuponpubliclyavailabledatafrommultiplesources,whichdonotalwaysagree.234TheSustainableDevelopmentGoalsReport,UnitedNations,2021TheStateofGlobalClimate2020,WorldMeteorologicalOrganisationGlobalEconomicProspects,WorldBank,20212021MobileIndustryImpactReport:SustainableDevelopmentGoals1101.Introductionandkey?ndingsThroughoutthecrisis,digitaltechnologieshaveplayedapivotalroleinenablingsocialandeconomicactivitiestocontinue.Peoplearoundtheworldhavereliedontheinternettostayconnectedtofriendsandfamily,accesseducationandhealthservices,andworkremotely.Thisunderscorestheimportanceofconnectivityinourdailylivesand,inparticular,thevalueofmobilenetworks,whichremaintheonlyformofinternetaccessformanypeople.However,thepandemichasalsoshonealightontheneedtobridgethedigitaldivide.Peoplewithoutinternetaccessaremostvulnerabletotheeconomicandsocialdisruptionscausedbythepandemic.Thishasincreasedtheurgencyofidentifyingsolutionstoacceleratemobileinternetadoptionanduse.ThissixthannualSDGimpactreportdemonstratesthemobileindustry’scontinuedcommitmenttotheSDGs.Itshowsthat,despitethesigni?cantchallengesposedbythepandemic,themobileindustryincreaseditscontributiontoall17SDGsin2020.Thisre?ectstheeffortsofmobileoperatorsandtheirpartnersinrespondingquicklyandeffectivelytotheCovid-19crisis.Operatorsineveryregionhavebeenproactiveinreachingouttotheircustomers,workingwithpublicauthoritiesandthirdpartiestoprovidearangeofvitalservices,andsupportingthecommunitiesinwhichtheyoperate.However,whilethemobileindustry’sSDGimpactincreasedin2020,progressslowedamidthepandemic.Thishighlightstheimportanceoftakingdecisiveactionoverthenextdecadeanddrivingtheaccelerationofdigitaltransformation.2021MobileIndustryImpactReport:SustainableDevelopmentGoals01.Introductionandkey?ndings12Key?ndingsThemobileindustryishalfwaytomaximisingitspotentialimpactontheSDGs.TheaverageSDGimpactscoreimprovementslowedin2020amidtheCovid-19crisis.33%48%50%201520192020In2020,themobileindustryincreaseditsimpactforeachofthe17SDGs,achievinganaverageSDGimpactscoreof50.Thismeanstheindustryisachieving50%ofitspotentialcontributiontotheSDGs–upfrom48%in2019and33%in2015.Progresscannotbetakenforgranted,especiallywiththepandemicunderminingdecadesofdevelopmentefforts.Therearelessthan10yearslefttoachievethe2030SDGtargetsandthereismoretobedonetoacceleratethemobileindustry’simpact.Mobileadoptioncontinuedtoincreasein2020,despitetheeconomicrecession,supportingtheindustry’scontributiontomultipleSDGs.5.2billionpeople(67%oftheglobalpopulation)3.3billionpeople(64%ofmobilesubscribers)…Bytheendof2020,5.2billionpeople(67%oftheglobalpopulation)wereusingamobilephone,representinganincreaseof90millionpeoplesince2019.Inaddition,fourbillionpeople(51%oftheglobalpopulation)werealsousingthemobileinternet,whichisanincreaseof220millionsince2019.…usedmobiletomakevideocalls,aidingseveralonlineactivities,includinge-learning,telehealthandremoteworking.Thisrepresentsanadditional440millionpeoplesince2019.Thissupportsthemobileindustry’scontributiontoSDG3:GoodHealth,SDG4:QualityEducationandSDG8:DecentWorkandEconomicGrowth.2.6billionpeople2.3billionpeople(50%ofmobilesubscribers)…(45%ofmobilesubscribers)……usedmobile?nancialservices(suchasmobilebankingandmobilemoney).Thisrepresentsanincreaseof270millionpeoplesince2019.Usingmobile?nancialserviceshelpstocreateemploymentopportunities,raiseproductivityandformalisetheeconomy,contributingtoSDG1:NoPovertyandSDG8:DecentWorkandEconomicGrowth.…usedtheirphonetopurchasegoodsandservices,representinganincreaseof300millionsince2019.Duringthepandemic,morepeopleusedmobiletopurchasefoodandotheressentialproductsandservicesastheybecamelesscomfortablehandlingcash.2021MobileIndustryImpactReport:SustainableDevelopmentGoals1301.Introductionandkey?ndingsThemobileindustryismakingcontinuedprogressondisclosingclimatedata(ratherthanperformance)andsettingtargetsforemissionsreductions.Netzeroby2050Attheendof2020,69%ofoperatorsbyconnectionsand80%byrevenuedisclosedtheirclimateimpacts,while31%ofoperatorsbyconnectionsand36%byrevenuehadsetcarbonreductiontargetstobenetzeroby2050.ThemobileindustryachievesitshighestimpactonSDG9:Industry,InnovationandInfrastructure,
