and2022,Accenture’sGlobalDisruption
Index(GDI)scoretripledoverthepreviousfiveyears,risingfrom30to89outof100
(seeFigure1).Thisincreaseisespecially
significantwhencomparedtothemere4%riseseenfrom2011to2016.Companies
nowfaceapermanentstateofchangeatanunprecedentedpace.Inparticular,technology,consumerpreferencesandclimatechangearedrivingmassive
structuralshiftsinhowtheworldoperates.

Theincreasinguncertaintyoftheglobal
businesslandscapepresentsnew
challengestocompaniesworldwide.In
recentyears,thespeedoftransformation
hasrapidlyincreased,frequentlyappearingindiscussionswithintheglobalbusiness
community.Basedonanaturallanguageprocessing(NLP)analysisoftheearningsconferencecallsofnearly2,000ofthe
world’slargestcompaniesbymarket
capitalization,Accenturefoundthat
approximately80%ofthesecompanies
consistentlymentionedacceleration-relatedtermsbetweenthefirstquarterof2019
tothatof2023.Thistrendbecomeseven
moreprominentduringtimesofexternal
uncertainties.Forexample,therewasa
noticeableincreaseinthepercentageof
companiesmentioningacceleration-relatedtermsintheirearningsmeetingsduring
Q12020,whentheglobalspreadofthe
COVID-19pandemicbegan,andinQ12022,whentheRussia-Ukraineconflictbrokeout(seeFigure2).

Moreover,thetopicofsustainabilityin
digitaltransformationhasbecomemuch
moreprominent.Comparedtofiveyears
agowhendiscussionsmainlycentered
onunresolvedenvironmentalissuesand
compliancerequirementsforresource-
basedenterprises,thefocusofdiscussionshasshiftedtosustainabilityasanewsourceofgrowththatenterprisesareactively
exploring.Managingandcultivatingtalent,aswellasfosteringacultureofchange
havealsoemergedasnewtopicsunderdigitalization.
Mostimportantly,Chinesecompanies
recognizethatdigitizationisnotjusta
simpletechnologicalconceptorchoice,but
ratheralife-or-deathstrategy.
Overthepastfiveyears,thediscussion
arounddigitaltransformationhasshifted
fromlocalizedsingle-pointapplicationstoa
moresystematicapproachofconstruction

Companiesarestartingtounderstandthat

withfreshchallengesintheformofTotal
EnterpriseReinvention.Companiesmust
re-evaluatetheirtransformationstrategies,takeaholisticviewtomaximizethebenefitsoftechnology,andtransformdiversified
challengesintomultipleformsofvalue,
reinventingtheorganizationfromabroaderanddeeperperspective.
TotalEnterpriseReinventionisadeliberatestrategythataimstosetanewperformancefrontierforcompanies
andinmostcases,theindustriesinwhichtheyoperate.

Only2%ofChinesecompanieshavebeguntheirjourneyofreinvention
AccordingtoAccenture’sChinaDigital
TransformationIndex2023,2%ofChinese
companiesaremovingtoadoptastrategyofTotalEnterpriseReinvention.Theseforward-thinkingcompanies,or“Reinventors”,are
ambitiousinthattheyrefusetorestontheirlaurelsbutaimatsettingnewperformancefrontiers;theyarepowerfulinaction,
reinventingbusinessesandfunctionswithastrongdigitalcore;andtheychampionmultidimensionalperformance,working
hardtogenerate360°value(seeFigure5).
However,Chinesecompaniesarefalling
behindintheglobalracetoreinvention.
Atthegloballevel,8%ofcompaniesare
Reinventors.Incomparison,thepercentageofReinventorsinNorthAmericanand
Europeancompaniesis8%and6%,
respectively.1

ThevalueReinventorsgenerateisfarmorethanfinancial,however,theyareactively
managingandachievingnon-financial
outcomestocreate360°value.Accenture’s

peersinbothfinancialand360ovalue.

Reinventionsaysettingnon-financialtargetsisveryimportant,comparedwith30%of
theothers.2Beyondthesurvey,Accenture’sanalysisrevealsthatcomparedwithindustrypeers,Reinventorsperform32%betteron
sustainabilityand11%betteron“netbetteroff”outcomesfortalent.3
Globalresearchhasdemonstratedthat
businessesthatembraceTotalEnterprise
Reinventionhavestrongerfinancial
performance.Infact,Reinventorsreport
generating10%higherincrementalrevenue
growthand13%highercost-reduction
improvementscomparedwiththerest.
Additionally,Reinventorsreportdelivering
1.3timesfinancialvalueinthefirstsix
monthsthanothercompanies—areflection
ofthespeedatwhichsuchcompanies
executeanddeliverincreasedvalue.
Specifically,Reinventorsachieved11.4%
oftheirtargetvalue,whileothershave
achieved8.9%inthesameperiod.

Reinventionopensupanewcompetitivelandscape—andgivescompaniesthe
opportunitytoovertaketheirpeers
Overthepastfiveyears,Accenturehas
emphasizedChinesecompaniesmustrotatetothenewandmakeawisepivottothe
secondgrowthcurve.In2018,only7%of
companiessurveyedwereChampions.Thepastfiveyearssawaten-percentagepointincreaseinthedigitalizationofChinese
enterprises,indicatingsubstantialprogress.
However,duetouncertaintiesinthe
macroeconomicenvironment,Chinese
companiesshiftedtheirfocustooperationsandcostoptimizationin2022.Innovation
effortsweresignificantlydented,asreflectedbyamere1%increaseinthepercentageof
Championscomparedto2021.ItisprojectedthattheshareofChampionswillfurther

operationsbuthaveroomtobuildtheirdigitalcoreanddeveloptheirtalent
Accenture’sChinaDigitalTransformation
IndexevaluatestheperformanceofChinesecompanies.Thisyear,theaveragescore
acrossallcompanieswas44.However,uponacloserlook,itbecomesapparentthatthe
reinventioncapabilitiesareimbalanced,withanoveremphasisonoptimizingoperationsattheexpenseofothercapabilities.
Onaverage,Chinesecompaniesscored
thehighestonoptimizingtheiroperations,
whichreceivedascoreof58outof100(seeFigure8).Inparticular,Chinesecompanies
haveemphasizedthedigitalintegrationof
businessandfinancialsystemsaswellas
trackinginformationthroughouttheproductlifecycle.However,Chinesecompanieshave
notyetestablishedasignificantadvantageinbuildingadigitalcoreandbeingpoweredbypeople,astheirscoresinthesedimensions
arebelow40.
