PeoplewhoclaimtohaveseenUFOsareconfidentthatwhatthey'veseenisreal.TheysaythesealienbeingshavecometoEarthtostudythehumanraceorsimplytocommunicatewithhumans.ButskepticssaythereisastartlinglackofrealscientificevidencetoproveordisprovetheUFOphenomenon.TheyarguethatthemajorityofUFOsturnouttobeidentifiablephenomena—everythingfromweatherballoonstometeorshowerstohoaxes.

TheDrakeEquation

Doesintelligentlifeexistonotherplanets?In1961,Dr.FrankDrake,presidentoftheSETI(SearchforExtraterrestrialIntelligence)Institute,developedamathematicalequationtodeterminetheprobability.Hisequationisbasedonsevenvariables,includingthenumberofstarsinourgalaxyandthepercentageofstarsthathaveplanetarysystems.Whenallsevenvariablesaremultiplied,theansweristhepotentialnumberofcivilizationsouttherethatmightbeabletocommunicatewithus.

AlienEncounters

Havealiensreallytakenpeopleintotheirspacecraftandexperimentedonthem?Manysaytheyhave.ProbablythefirstaccountofanalienabductioncamefromaNewHampshirecouplenamedBarneyandBettyHill.OnSeptember19,1961,thecouplewasdrivingthrougharuralareaincentralNewHampshirewhentheynoticedamovinglightinthesky.Astheobjectcamecloser,theysawthatitwaslargeandflatwithmulticoloredlightsandmanyrowsofwindows.WhenBarneylookedatthecraftthroughhisbinoculars(雙筒望遠鏡),hereportedlysawcreaturesinsideit,oneofwhichappearedtobetheleader.Frightened,thecoupledrovehome.Severaldaysaftertheirsighting,Bettybegantohavenightmaresaboutbeinginsidethecraft.Later,underhypnosis(催眼狀態(tài)),thecouplerecalledhavingbeentakenintotheUFOandexperimentedupon.

WeretheHills,andthethousandsofotherpeoplewhosaytheyhavebeenabductedsincethen,tellingthetruth?SkepticsclaimthealienswithwraparoundeyesthatBarneydescribedairedonanepisodeof"OuterLimits"just12daysbeforethehypnosissessioninwhichhedescribedthem.

Butthestoriesofabducteesareremarkablysimilar.Manypeopledescribeanexaminationroominwhichtheirbodiesarepoked,proddedandstudiedinvariousways.

Thesememoriesmaysoundlikethestuffofimagination,butsomeresearcherssayalienabducteessharemanyofthesamestressdisordersymptomsaswarveterans.Whentheylistentoaudiotapesofsoundsthatmirrortheirexperiences,theyexhibitphysicalsymptoms—theirpalmssweat,theirmusclescontractandtheirheartrateincreases,HarvardUniversityresearcherRichardMcNallyreportedintheJuly2004issueofthejournalPsychologicalScience.

ProbablythefirstmoderncloseencounterwithalienspacecraftoccurredonJune24,1947.AprivatepilotnamedKennethArnoldwasflyingnearMr.RainierinWashingtonstatewhenhespottednine,crescent-shapedflyingobjects.Heobservedtheobjectstobemovingatwellover1,000milesperhour,farfasterthananyman-madeaircraftcouldflyatthetime.Onereporterwritinguptheeventreferredtotheobjectsas"flyingsaucers(飛碟)",andthedescriptionstuck.
