“costumes”suchasa1920’s“flappergirl”andthe1960’s“hippie.”With

deeperconsideration,however,thesedifferingfashionstylescanbeviewedas

representativeoftherelatedsocialconditionsoccurringatthetime.As

statedbyPasacoe,“Thefashionofthe1920’sreflectedtheJazzAgeperfectly.

ItwasmadeforfastautomobilesandCharlestondance.Forthefirsttimein

westernfashionthekneewassociallyacceptable.”Althoughtherearemany

theoriesregardingwhatcausesfashiontochange,thefactthatsocialclimateis

reflectedinstylesofdresshasagreatdealofsupport.Perhapsthereasonwhy

somuchchangeoccurredinwomen’sdressintheearlydecadesofthecenturyis

thatsomanychangesoccurredregardingwomen’srolesandfightswithinthat

sametimeframe.Anotherdecadeinwhichfashionwasstronglyindicativeof

theunderlyingsocialconditionsistheturbulent1960’s.Oneofthemostnoted

developmentsaccreditedtothisdecadeistheintroductionoftheminiskirt.Many

socialhistoriansrelatetheintroductionoftheminiskirttotheintroductionof

thebirthcontrolpill.Womenbecamesexuallyliberatedandthe“freelove”era

began.Theseminiskirtscametosymbolizethenewliberationforwomenandthe

socialclimateofthedecade.AsstatedinVogueattheendofthedecade,“The

lengthofyourskirtishowyoufeelthismoment.”Towardstheendofthe

1960's,youngergenerationswererejectingtheestablishmentandrejectingthe

ideaofhighfashionalongwithit.Studentsworelonghair,fadeddenimjeans,

andflamboyantpatterns.Manyworecombatjacketsandsurplusshirtstoanti-war

rallies.AsHoeymakerstated,“Bytheendofthedecade,cheap,flamboyant

clothesbecameexpensivedesignerlabels.Thehippiestylebecamehighfashion;
