TWENTIETHCENTURYLookingback,thetwentiethcenturyhasseen
numerousscientificandtechnologicachievements,andwhatstandouthigh
aboveothersareadvancesinmedicalscience.Theirresultshaveclearlybeen
showninthreeareas,developmentofvaccinesandantibiotics,discoveriesof
newdiagnosismethods,andtheadventofgeneticengineeringasanew
branchoflearning.Eversincemedicalresearchersstartedtodevisewaysof
preventinggermsinvadingthebody,andoffightingthemoncetheydid,the
qualityoflifeforpeopleintheworldhasremarkablyimproved.Today
smallpoxisaforgottendisease,andvaccinationsarenolongerrequired.Polio
isundercontrolandthevaccineiswidelyavailable.Thedevelopmentofsuch
antibioticsaspenicillinhashelpedmanypeoplerecoverfromseriousillness.
Overthepastdecadesmoreandmoredoctorshavecometorealizethe
importanceofdetectingchangesinthebodyatanearlystage.Modem
diagnosisbeganintheearly1900swiththediscoveryofX-rays.Withthe
