Asdayswentby,adeepfriendshipbegantodevelopbetweenthem.

EveryafternoonwhenJackcouldsitup,hewouldpassthetimebydescribingtoBenall

thethingshecouldseeoutsidethewindow.AndBenbegantoliveforthoseone-hourperiods

wherehisworldwouldbebroadenedandenlivenedbyalltheactivityandcoloroftheworld

outside.

Thewindowoverlookedaparkwithalovelylake.Ducksandswansplayedonthewaterwhile

childrensailedtheirmodelboats.Youngloverswalkedarminarmamidflowersofeverycolor

oftherainbow.Grandoldtreesbeautifiedthelandscape,andafineviewofthecityskyline

couldbeseeninthedistance.

AsJackdescribedallthisinexquisitedetail,Benwouldclosehiseyesandimaginethe

picturesquescenes.

OnewarmafternoonJackdescribedaparadepassingby.AlthoughBencouldn,thearthe

band--hecouldseeitinhismind,seyeasJackportrayeditwithdescriptivewords.

Daysandweekspassed.Onemorningthedaynursearrivedtobringwaterfortheirbaths

onlytofindthelifelessbodyofJack,whohaddiedpeacefullyinhissleep.Shewassaddened

andcalledthehospitalattendantstotakethebodyaway.

Benwasheartbroken.LifewithoutJackwasevenmoreunbearable.Howhelongedtohear

Jack,svoiceandhismelodiousdescriptionsoftheoutsideworld!Ashelookedatthewindow,

anideasuddenlyoccurredtohim.Perhapshecouldseeforhimselfwhatitwaslikeoutside.

Assoonasitseemedappropriate,Benaskedifhecouldbemovednexttothewindow.Thenurse

washappytomaketheswitch,andaftermakingsurehewascomfortable,shelefthimalone.
