HowMuchTrashIsGenerated?

Ofthe210milliontonsoftrash,orsolidwaste,generatedintheUnitedStatesannually,about56

milliontons,or27percent,iseitherrecycled(glass,paperproducts,plastic,metals)orcomposted

HowIsaLandfillOperated?

Alandfill,suchastheNorthWakeCountyLandfill,mustbeopenandavailableeveryday.

Customersaretypicallymunicipalitiesandconstructioncompanies,althoughresidentsmayalso

use(helandfill.

Neartheentranceofthelandfillisarecyclingcenterwhereresidentscandropoffrecyclable

materials(aluminumcans,glassbottles,newspapersandpaperproducts).Thishelpstoreducethe

amountofmaterialinthelandfill.Someofthesematerialsarebannedfromlandfillsbylaw

becausetheycanberecycled.

Ascustomersenterthesite,theirtrucksareweighedatthescalehouse.Customersarecharged

lippingfeesforusing(hesite.Thetippingfeesvaryfrom$10to$40perton.Thesefeesareused

topayforoperationcosts.TheNorthWakeCountyLandfillhasanoperatingbudgetof

approximatelyS4.5million,andpartofthatconiesfromtippingfees.

Alongthesite,therearedrop-offstationsformaterialsthatarenotwantedorlegallybannedby

thelandfill.Amulti-materialdrop-offstationisusedfortires,motoroil,lead-acidbatteries.Some

Inaddition,thereisahouseholdhazardouswastedrop-offstationforchemicals(paints,

pesticides,otherchemicals)thatarebannedfrom(helandfill.Thesechemicalsaredisposedofby

privatecompanies.Somepaintscanberecycledandsomeorganicchemicalscanbeburnedin

furnacesorpowerplants.

Otherstructuresalongsidethelandfillaretheborrowedareathatsuppliesthesoilforthelandfill,
