Thestudy,publishedinthejournalPLOSONE,involved1,261Americanswhoparticipatedonline.They
weresplitintothreegroupswhoreadanarticleaboutafictionalschoolthatlackedadequatewater.Onegroupread
anarticlethatonlygavereasonswhytheschoolshouldmergewithanotherthathadadequatewater;asecondgroup9
sarticleonlygavereasonsforstayingseparateandhopingforothersolutions;andthethirdgroupreadallthe
argumentsfortheschoolsmergingandforstayingseparate.
Thefindingsshowedthatthetwogroupswhoreadhalfthestory-eitherjustthepro-mergingorjustthe
anti-mergingarguments-stillbelievedtheyhadenoughinformationtomakeagooddecision."'Thosewithhalf
theinformationactuallyshowgreatercertaintyintheirdecisiontomergeorremainseparatethanthosewhohadthe
completestory,Fletchersaid.
Thesediscoveriesenhanceourunderstandingofnaiverealism,whereindividualsperceivetheirpersonal
viewpointsasthefactualreality,asFletchernoted.Researchonnaiverealismoftenfocusesonhowpeoplehave
