Itwasn’tthatshewantedustoavoidtakingafranklookatournation’spastandpresentlife—quitethecontrary.Wespentalotoftimelearningaboutthemistakesandinjusticescommittedoverthegenerations.Everyday,wesangournationalanthem,andeveryday,weproudlysalutedournation’sflag.

Everyday,too,wehadahistorylessonrightafterthatexerciseinloyalty.Itwasthenthatathoughtfulandboldlyindependent-mindedteachermadeusturnfromaglibrecitalofloyaltytosomethingelse.

Irespectholdingaskepticismofunblinkingavowals.Childrendoneedencouragementtosiftandsort,tobewaryofwhatstrikesthemasfakeortwo-faced.Butchildrenalsoneedconvictions—somethingandsomeonetotrust,toholdupasworthyofadmiration.
