comparetheeconomicwelfareofcitizensoftheU.S.andFrancein2005.
In2005,astheauthorsobserve:realconsumptionperpersoninFrancewasonly60%ashighas
theU.S..makingitappearthatAmericanswereeconomicallymuchbetteroffthantheFrenchon
average.However,thatcomparisonomitsotherrelevantfactors:leisuretimejifeexpectancy,and
economicinequality.TheFrenchtakelongervacationsandretireearlier,sotypicallyworkfewer
hours;theyenjoyahigherlifeexpectancy,presumablyreflectingadvantageswithrespectto
healthcare,diet,lifestyle,andthelike;andincomeandconsumptionaresomewhatmoreequally
distributedtherethanintheU.S.Becauseofthesedifferences,comparingFrance'sconsumption
withtheU.S.'soverstatesthegapineconomicwelfare.
SimilarcalculationscanbeusedtocomparetheU.S.andothercountries.Forexample,this
calculationputseconomicwelfareintheUnitedKingdomat97%ofU.S.levels,butestimates
Mexicanwell-beingat22%.
TheJones-Klenowmeasurecanalsoassessaneconomy'sperformanceovertime.Accordingto
thismeasurersoftheearly-to-mid^OOOsAheU.S.hadthehighesteconomicwelfareofanylarge
country.Since2007,economicwelfareintheU.S.hascontinuedtoimprove.Howevecthepaceof
improvementhasslowedmarkedly.
Methodologically,thelessonfromtheJones-Klenowresearchisthateconomicwelfareis
