Americansthisyearwillswallow15,000tonsofaspirin,one
ofthesafestandmosteffectivedrugsinventedbyman.Asthe
mostpopularmedicineintheworldtoday,itisaneffectivepain
reliever.Itsbadeffectsarerelativelymildzanditischeap.
AlthoughaspirinwasfirstsoldbyaGermancompanyin
1899,ithasbeenaroundmuchlongerthanthat.Hippocrates,in
ancientGreece,understoodthemedicalvalueoftheleavesand
treebarkwhichtodayareknowntocontainsalicylates,the
chemicalinaspirin.Duringthe19thcenturytherewasagreat
dealofexperimentationinEuropewiththischemicalanditled
totheintroductionofaspirin.By1915,aspirintablets(片齊[J)were
availableintheUnitedStates.
Formillionsofpeoplesufferingfromarthritis,aspirinisthe
onlythingthatworks.
Asmallquantityofaspirin(twofive-graintablets)relieves
painandinflammation.Italsoreducesfeverbyinterferingwith
someofthebody'sreactions.Aspirin,inshort,istrulythe20th-
CAnturywonderdrug.Ontheotherhand,itisalsothesecond
largestsuicidedrugandistheleadingcauseofpoisoning
amongchildren.Ithassideeffectsthat,althoughrelativelymild,
arelargelyunrecognizedamongusers.
