Beforethe1830s,mostnewspapersweresoldthroughannual

subscriptionsinAmerica,usually$8to$10ayear.Today$8or$10

seemsasmallamountofmoney,butatthattimetheseamountswere

forbiddingtomostcitizens.Accordingly,newspaperswereread

almostonlybyrichpeopleinpoliticsorthetrades.In

addition,mostnewspapershadlittleinthemthatwouldappealto

amassaudience.Theyweredullandvisuallyforbidding.Butthe

revolutionthatwastakingplaceinthe1830swouldchangeallthat.

Thetrend,then,wastowardtheupennypaper“一aterm

referringtopapersmadewidelyavailabletothepublic.Itmeant

anyineoreimportantlyitmeantnewspapersthatcouldbeboughtin

singlecopiesonthestreet.

Thisdevelopmentdidnottakeplaceovernight.Ithadbeen

possible(butnoteasy)tobuysinglecopiesofnewspapersbefore

1830,butthisusuallymeantthereaderhadtogodowntothe

printer'sofficetopurchaseacopy.Streetsaleswerealmost

unknown.However,withinafewyears,streetsalesofnewspapers

wouldbecommonplaceineasterncities.Atfirstthepriceofsingle

copieswasseldomapenny一usuallytwoorthreecentswas

charged—andsomeoftheolderwell-knownpaperschargedfiveor

sixcents.Butthephrase“pennypaper”caughtthepublic's

fancy,andsoontherewouldbepapersthatdidindeedsellforonly

apenny.

Thisnewtrendofnewspapersfor“themanonthestreet”did
