unication,butalsoposenewchallengesandopportunitiesforcross-culturalcommunication.Thepurposeofthisthesisistopromotecross-culturalcommunication,enrichthecontentoflanguageresearch,andpromotelanguageinnovationanddevelopmentbystudyingtheculturalconnotationofInternetbuzzwordsandtheirtranslationstrategies.LiteratureReviewUnderthebackgroundofglobalizationandtherapiddevelopmentofnetworktechnology,ChineseInternetbuzzwords,asanewlanguagephenomenon,notonlyreflectthesocialandculturalchanges,butalsoplayanimportantroleincross-culturalcommunication.ThestudyofitsEnglishtranslationishelpfultopromotethespreadofChineseculturetotheoutsideworldandpromoteinternationalcommunicationandunderstanding.Thefollowingwillfocusonthedomesticandforeignresearchstatusandresearchlimitationstolaunchareview.TheresearchonInternetlanguageandbuzzwordsstartedearlierinforeigncountries.In1997,theUniversityofHartfordintheUnitedStatesheldaInternetlanguageseminar,andin2003,thefirstInternationallanguageConferencewasheldinSpain,focusingonInternetlanguageresearch,markingthatInternetlanguageresearchbegantoattracttheattentionoftheworldlinguisticscommunity.In2001,renownedlinguistDavidCrystalpublishedLanguageandtheInternet,becomingaleadingscholarinthestudyofEnglishInternetlanguage.Foreignstudiesmainlyfocusonthechangesoflanguagenature,thecausesofInternetlanguage,symbolsandtherelationshipbetweenInternetlanguageandculture.Forexample,thestudyofnewwordsgeneratedbyInternetbuzzwordsisoftenaccompaniedbythecompilationofEnglishdictionaries.However,theresearchesontheEnglishtranslationofChineseInternetbuzzwordsarerelativelyfewandlackofsystematicness.DomesticscholarshavestudiedtheEnglishtranslationofChineseInternetbuzzwordsfromavarietyoftheoreticalperspectives.Basedonthetheoryoffunctionalequivalence,thisthesisdiscusseshowtoachievetheequivalencebetweenthetranslatedtextandtheoriginaltextintermsofcontent,styleandculture.BasedonSkopostheory,thisthesisstudieshowtoselecttranslationstrategiesaccordingtothepurposeoftranslation.Intermsoftranslationstrategies,itisgenerallybelievedthatdomesticationandforeignizationareimportantresearchdirections.Domesticationisorientedtowardstargetlanguage,whichmakesthetranslationmoreinlinewiththelanguagehabitsandculturalbackgroundofthetargetlanguagereaders.Alienationemphasizesthepreservationoftheculturalcharacteristicsofthesourcelanguage.SomescholarsbelievethatbecausethedifferencesbetweenChineseandEnglishInternetbuzzwordsaregreaterthanthesimilarities,thetranslationshouldtakedomesticationasthemainstrategyandforeignizationastheauxiliarystrategy.ManystudieshavesummarizedthespecificmethodsoftranslatingChineseInternetbuzzwordsintoEnglish,includingliteraltranslation,freetranslation,annotation,substitution,backtranslationandsoon.Literaltranslationisapplicabletothesituationwherethesourcelanguageandthetargetlanguagearerelativelyequivalentinfunctionandform,andcanretaintheimageandculturalconnotationoftheoriginal.Freetranslationfocusesonconveyingthedeepmeaningoftheoriginaltext,andisusedwhentherearegreatculturaldifferences.Theannotationmethodhelpsthetargetlanguagereadersunderstandthewordswithculturalbackgroundbyaddingexplanatorycontent.SubstitutionistoreplaceChineseInternetbuzzwordswithEnglishwordsorexpressionswithsimilarmeanings;BacktranslationismainlyusedtodealwithInternetbuzzwordsoriginatingfromforeignlanguages.Atpresent,ChineseInternetbuzzwordslackclearandsystematicclassificationstandards,anddifferentscholars'classificationmethodsaredifferentandoftenoverlap,whichbringsdifficultiestotheaccuratetranslationofInternetbuzzwords.Duetotheunclearclassification,itisdifficultfortranslatorstochoosethemostappropriatetranslationmethodfordifferenttypesofInternetbuzzwords,whichaffectsthetranslationqualityandcross-culturalcommunicationeffect.Moreover,existingstudiesmostlyfocusontheanalysisofindividualInternetbuzzwordsorspecifictheories,andlackcomprehensiveandin-depthresearchontheEnglishtranslationofChineseInternetbuzzwords.Somestudiesonlyfocusontranslationmethodsanddonotfullyconsiderthecomprehensiveinfluenceofculturalfactorsontranslation.Somestudiesinvolveculturalfactors,butthediscussionofculturaldifferencesisnotdetailedenoughtodeeplyanalyzethespecificmechanismofculturalbackground,thinkingmode,aestheticconceptandotherfactorsinthetranslationprocess.TheCulturalConnotationandClassificationofChineseInternetBuzzwordsCulturalConnotationSocialValueReflectioninCulturalConnotation“Internetbuzzwordsemergedfromthebasiclanguageexpressionformoftheinternet.Thedevelopmentoftheprovidesanewwayforthetransmissionofinformation,whichgivestheopportunitytothegenerationofnetworklanguage.Asaparticularpartofthenetworklanguage.,Internetbuzzwordscanreflecttheideologicaltendenciesofsociety.Colloquialism,playfulness,culturalinclusiveness,andconventionalismarethecharacteristicsofinternetbuzzwords.”①ChineseInternetbuzzwordsarelikeamirror,vividlyreflectingthevaluesofcontemporarysocietyandopeningauniquewindowforustounderstandthecollectivementalityandculturalchangesofnetizens.Thesebuzzwordsdonotappearinavacuum,theyaredeeplyrootedinthesocial,economicandculturalsoil,encompassingtheresonancesandvaluesofallclasses.Take"打工人"asanexample.ThiswordisnowalltherageontheInternetandhasbecomesynonymouswithworkersinalmostallindustries.Behinditreflectsaspecialsenseofself-identity,aswellastheuniquetacitunderstandingandfriendshipbetweenworkers.Intoday'shyper-competitivejobmarket,longhoursandhighlevelsofstressarecommonplace.Theword"worker"ispreciselytheacceptanceofthisworkingclassidentity.Italsorevealsasenseofhumorandresilience,asiftosay,"Althoughtheworkishard,wecanstilllaugh."Employeesusethewordtoexpresstheirsharedexperiences,whetherit'sstayinguplatetomeetdeadlines,grittingtheirteethunderpressure,orlookingforwardtothefuture.Itembodiesthevaluesofhardworkandperseverance,aswellasthedeep-seatedbeliefthatifyouworkhard,youcanliveabetterlife.Moreinterestingly,"worker"alsoimpliesasubtleshiftinpeople'sattitudestowardwork.Inthepast,workmayhavebeenseenmerelyasameanstoearnaliving,butnowitisseenmoreaspartofanindividual'sidentityandasacontributiontosociety.Thischangeinconceptactuallyreflectstheprogressofsocietyandtheimprovementofpeople'sself-cognition.Whenitcomestovaluesinthefieldofsocialrelations,wehavetomentiontheword"Buddhasystem".It'sinspiredbyBuddhistphilosophy,andit'sverypopularrightnow.Itisaperfectdescriptionofalaid-back,uncompetitive,andspontaneousattitudetolife.Inthissocietythatemphasizesgettingaheadandstrivinghardeveryday,the"Buddhasystem"islikeaclearcurrent,representingadifferentvalueorientation.Behinditisthedeepdesireofsomepeopletofreethemselvesfromthepressureofcompetition,payattentiontotheirownsmalldays,andenjoythepeaceofmind.Justlikethose"佛系青年"aroundus,theydonotcaremuchabouttheeyesofothers,nordotheydeliberatelypursuethoseworldlysuccess.Theyaremorelikelytospendtimeonhobbies,suchascalmingdownwithagoodbookorgoingforawalkinthecountryonweekends.Thiswayoflifeisactuallythepursuitofamorebalancedandharmoniousstate.Here,therelationshipbetweenpeopleisnolongerasimplecomparisonandcompetition,butmoremutualunderstanding,acceptance,andthatkindofwarmthbasedoncommonhumanity.OntheChineseInternet,valuesrelatedto"socialjustice"and"equality"canbeseeneverywhere.Whenitcomestodiscrimination,inequalityorunfairtreatment,theInternetcanimmediatelystirupastorm.Thesebuzzwords,like"weapons"inthehandsofnetizens,haverushedtotheforefrontasaformofonlineactivism.Forexample,genderequality.TherearemanybuzzwordsontheInternetthatemphasizeequalpayforequalwork,equalopportunityineducation,andfairemployment,andcalloneveryonetostopgenderdiscrimination.Thesewordsarenotsimplyslogans,theyreflectthenetizens'growingconcernforsocialjustice.Thesebuzzwordsarereallyamagicalthing,andtheyarenotsmall.Theymaybesimplewords,butwhattheydoisnot.Ontheonehand,theyarelikeasmallloudspeaker,Shoutingoutthoseproblemsthatwouldotherwisebeignored,sothatmorepeopleknow.Ontheotherhand,it'slikethey'resoundingarallyingcall,pullingalltheirforcestogetherandsaying,"We'vegottodosomethingtogether!"Behindthesebuzzwords,thereisactuallyacommon"smallflame"inourhearts-weallhopetohaveafairerandmoreequalsociety.TheenthusiasmofChineseInternetuserswaspalpableassoonasthewordsappeared.Theyarenotjusttalkingaboutit,butactuallyparticipatinginthediscussionofsocialissues.Theyuselanguageasatool,likeahammer,hammeringawayatold,irrationalnotionsoffairness,equalityandrespectthateveryoneisbornwith.ChineseInternetbuzzwordshidethepasswordofthecurrentsociety,especiallythoserelatedtodigitallifeandconsumerculture,reflectingthevariouscharacteristicsofthedevelopmentofourrapidlydevelopingera.Forexample,thenetworkbuzzword"種草"meanstorecommendproducts,ortomakepeople"wanttobuy"impulse.Withtherapiddevelopmentofmodernsocialnetworks,onlineshoppinghasbecomeverycommon.Inmodernsociety,shoppingisbasicallyonlineshopping.Whenpeopleopentheirmobilephones,browsesocialmedia,friends'sharing,andbloggers'recommendation,theyareveryexcited.Behindthis,infact,reflectsthestronginfluenceofsocialmediaonconsumerbehavior.Inmodernsociety,mostpeoplerelyononlinerecommendationsandreviewstobuythings,becauseeveryonewantstobuygoodproductsatlowprices.Thedigitalspacehaslongbecomea"bigstage"forproductpromotionandconsumption,andvariousbrandsandbloggersare"showingtheirtalents"onittoattractconsumers.Moreover,theword"grass"hidesadeepermeaning.Itreflectsachangeintherelationshipbetweenconsumersandbrands.Now,consumersaremorelikelytotrustpeoplearoundthemorbloggerswho"knowwhatthey'redoing"online.Thisconsumerculture,basedontrust,hasbecomeaparticularlyimportantpartofthevaluesofmodernsociety.Thistrust-basedconsumptionnotonlymakesshoppingmoreinteresting,butalsodriveschangesintheentireconsumermarket.Inconclusion,thesocialvaluereflectionintheculturalconnotationofChineseInternetbuzzwordsisacomplexandmulti-facetedphenomenon.Thesebuzzwordsnotonlycapturethespiritofthetimesbutalsoplayanactiveroleinshapingandinfluencingsocialvalues.Theyareatestamenttothepoweroflanguageinreflecting,andsometimesdriving,socialchangeincontemporaryChinesesociety.HistoricalandCulturalHeritageinInternetBuzzwordsChinesenetwo
