PAGEPAGE8AStylisticsAnalysisof“SonsandLovers”1.AbstractInthisessay,Imainlytalkaboutthestylisticsfeathersof“SonsandLovers”whichwrotebyD.H.Lawrence.Iwillanalysisthisnovelfromthreedifferentpoints,whichincludethethirdpersonusing,symbolismchoosing,thevarioustenseandotherstylisticsfeathersusing.2.Keywords:sonsandlovers,stylistics,analysis3.Body3.1Introductionoftheauthor:D.H.Lawrenceisoneofthemostoriginalandcontroversialmolderofthe20thcenturyfiction.“Sonsandlovers”isoneofhisrepresentatives.HewasbornatEastwood,Hismajorworksinclude:TheWhitePeacockpublishedin1911;lovepoemsandSonsandLoverspublishedin1915;Womeninlovein1920;MorningsinMexicoin1927etc.HediedofTBatVence,Lawrencebecameapowerfulinfluenceinliteratureduringthe1920s.Duringthelastyearofthehislife,therewasgreatcontroversyandclamorregardingthemeritofhiswritings,andevenafterhisdeath,therewasaliterary“wars”ofthereviews,inpraiseandabuseofLawrence.3.2.Introductionofthisstory:ThegrowthofPaulisthemaincluesinthisstory.TheauthordescribesthecomplexrelationshipsbetweenPaulandothertherewomen,includinghismother.4.Analysisthestylisticsfeathersaboutthisnovel:4.1.Usingthethirdpersontonarratethisstorytocoversomeviewsoftheauthor’s.Theauthorusesthethirdpersontotellthestorythroughoutthenovel.Itisabetterwaytohidetheauthorhimselfopinions.Muchmorespaceisgiventothereaders.Theycanspendmuchtimeonittothinkandimagine.Fromthispoint,itcanattractivepeople’sattentionandinterest.Thereadercanjudgewhatisrightandwhatiswrongbyhimselfinsteadofpushingtheviewsoftheauthorstothem.Wecansayitcanincreasetheobjectivenessofthisnoveltosomeextent.Somepeoplemayask“whydoestheauthorusethefirstpersonorsecondpersontowritethisstory?”WeshouldknowPaulandhismothercannotbethenarrator.BecausePaulisnotbornwhenthestorybeginsandhismotherisdeadveryearlywhentherearestillmanythingstosay.Forthisreasons,theauthorusethethirdpersontonarratethisstory.4.2.Choosingthesymbolicwaytoprescribethepsychologyandpersonalitiesofthecharacters4.2.1.TheauthordescribethenaturalscenesIfyouwanttoreflectaperson’spsychology,thesymbolismisthebestwaytotake.Sothereismuchsymbolicdescriptioninthisnovel.Hereisanexamplewhichselectedfromchapter1,“Shebecameawareofsomethingabouther.Withaneffortsherousedherselftoseewhatitwasthatpenetratedherconsciousness.Thetallwhitelilieswerereelinginthemoonlight,andtheairwaschargedwiththeirperfume,aswithapresence.Mrs.Morelgaspedslightlyinfear.Shetouchedthebig,pallidflowersontheirpetals,andthenshivered.Theyseemedtobestretchinginthemoonlight.Sheputherhandintoonewhitebin:thegoldscarcelyshowedonherfingersbymoonlight.Shebentdowntolookatthebanefulyellowpollen;butitonlyappeareddusky.Thenshedrankadeepdraughtofthescent.Italmostmadeherdizzy.”Thisparagraphdescribesthenaturalscenesvividly.ThevaguemoonlighthasacloserelationshipwithMrs.Morel’sfeeling.Thereissomepsychologicalmeaninginthisrealisticwriting.ThebeautifullilyswaysinthewindsuggestsMrs.Morel’scomplexheart.Atthesametime,thelilyalsocanletpeoplethinkofthepuregoddess.TheentiredescriptionsofthesignalsindicatethestrongspiritualandphysicaldependencebetweenPaulandhismother.Thecoldmoonlightspreadonhismother’sbodyandinherheartshefeelsangrysothatthebabyPaulbecomesactiveinhisbody.Fromthispoint,itindicatesthefateofthePaul.ThewholeofPaul’slifeisinthestateofunsteadily.Hehascomplexrelationshipswiththreedifferentwomen.Hedonotknowhowtosolvethisproblems.4.2.2.UsingthedifferentcolorwordtoprescribeInthisnovel,theauthoralwaysusesthecolorworldtodescribethecharacter.Hereisanexamplewhichselectedfromchapter1,“Whenshewastwenty-threeyearsold,shemet,ataChristmasparty,ayoungmanfromtheEyewashValley.Morelwasthentwenty-sevenyearsold.Hewaswellset-up,erect,andverysmart.Hehadwavyblackhairthatshoneagain,andavigorousblackbeardthathadneverbeenshaved.Hischeekswereruddy,andhisred,moistmouthwasnoticeablebecausehelaughedsooftenandsoheartily.Hehadthatrarething,arich,ringinglaugh.GertrudeCopperedhadwatchedhim,fascinated.Hewassofulloff-colorandanimation,hisvoiceransoeasilyintocomicgrotesque,hewassoreadyandsopleasantwitheverybody.Herownfatherhadarichfundofhumor,butitwassatiric.ThismanThecolorofredoftensymbolizestheenergetic.SowhenthewritertodescribeMr.morel,healwaysusethiscolorword.Comparingwiththecolorofred,thecolorofblackoftensymbolizesthedeath.Mr.Moreljustlikeamachineworksinthemine.Whenhegoestohomeafteratriedworkday,hiswifeandhischildrenignorehim.Hecannotfindhappyfromhisfamily,sohechoosestodrinkeveryday.Atlast,hisfateendsofdeath.Inashort,Lawrencealwaysusesthecolortodescribethecharacters,toprescribethepersonalities.Fromthesecolorwords,thereaderscanguessthefateofthecharacters.Itcanoffermorespace,sothereaderscanimagineandthinkwhatwillhappentothemaincharacters.Itwillgivedeepimpressiontothem.4.3.Talkingaboutdifferentstylisticsfeathers,Hereisanexamplewhichmainlytalksaboutchapter8,4.3.1InSonsandLovers,Lawrencemainlyusespasttenseverbsinhisgeneralnarration.Itseemsthattheauthoristellingastorytothereaders4.3.2Verbs:Verbsaremorefrequentinthetwoparagraphs,andmostofthemaredynamic.Theyareexult,cried,gone,absorb,sockup,battled,brought,move,breaking.Pronouns:Therearemanypronounsinthetwoparagraphs.“She”occurstentimes,“he”foreleventimes,“him”forninetimes.Besides,“me”,“his”,“her”and“himself”occur,too.Thehighfrequencyindicatesthattheauthorsharestheknowledgewiththereaders.4.3.3.SentencecomplexityLawrenceusesverysimpleandshortsentences.Thereare272wordsintotalinthetwoparagraphsand21sentences.Theaveragesentencelengthisonlyabout13words.Thelongestsentencehas31words,andtheshortestonehasonly4words.Moreover,thelasttwosentencesareshortsentences,oneforfourwordsandotherforninewords.Theyareexclamatorysentences,whichexpressesPaul’scontradictiousemotions.InterrogativesentenceInthesecondparagraph,therearefiveinterrogativesentenceswith“why”.TherewordsarefromPaul’sheart.ItshowsPaulisfullofinnerconflict―tohateMiriamortoshowtendernesstoher.Heisinaparadoxicalstate.PsychologicaldescriptionThetwoparagraphsarefullofpsychologicaldescriptionthefirstparagraphdescribesMrs.Morel’spsychologicalactivities.ItshowshowshehatesMiriamandhowsheworriedaboutPaul’sleavingawayfromher.AndtheseconddescribesPaul’spsychologicalactivities.ItindicatesPaulisverytornanddoesn’twanthermother’storture,sohehatesMiriam.4.InParagraphOne,theauthoru
