Thistermisusedtoincludedishonestuseofanotherindividual'saidinpreparationofwrittenassignments

aswellasduringaclassroom-testingperiod.Thestandardproceduresforthepreparationoftermpapersandthelike,asestablishedbytheEnglishDepartment,formthebasisfordecisionsincasesofplagiarism(SeeDefinitionofPlagiarism).

Thestudentmustbefamiliarwiththoseregulations.Disciplinaryactionwillbeimposed,notonlyincasesofdetectedcheating,butalsoforviolationsofsuchregulationsmentionedabove.

Inthelatter,aviolationoftheregulationwithoutconsiderationofthemotiveinvolvedwillbedeemedsufficientcauseforaction.

Instructorshavetherighttodeterminetheappropriatepenaltyforacademicdishonestyintheirownclasses;generally,however,suchactswillresultinafailinggradefortheassignmentand/orthecourseasawhole.Thepenaltyforsubsequentactsofacademicdishonestymayincludeexpulsion.DefinitionofCheatingTheterm“cheating”includes,butisnotlimitedto:1)useofanyunauthorizedassistanceintakingquizzes,testsorexaminations,2)useofsourcesbeyondthoseauthorizedbytheinstructorinwritingpapers,preparingreports,solvingproblems,orcarryingoutotherassignments,3)theacquisition,withoutpermission,oftestsorotheracademicmaterialbelongingtoamemberoftheUniversityfacultyorstaff,4)engaginginanybehaviorspecificallyprohibitedbyafacultymemberinthecoursesyllabusorclassdiscussion,or5)byuseofelectronicmeans(calculator,mobilephone,tablet,camera,etc.…)copyingortransmittinganswers,questions,orpartsofteststootherstudents.DefinitionofPlagiarism: INTENTIONALASWELLASUNINTENTIONALFAILURETOACKNOWLEDGESOURCESASWELLASTHEUSEOFCOMMERCIALLYAVAILABLESO-CALLED"RESEARCHPAPERS"WITHOUTFULLRECOGNITIONOFTHESOURCE.Studentsareresponsiblefordistinguishingclearlybetweentheir

ownfacts,ideasandconclusionsandthoseofothersources.

Tousesomeoneelse'swords,opinions,orconclusionswithoutgivingthemcreditisplagiarism.

Studentsmust

beabletodistinguishtheirownideas,conclusions,discoveries,etc.,fromthosereadorheard.
