Abstract:

Socialmediahasbecomeanintegralpartofourdailylives,withbillionsofusersworldwide.Whileitprovidesnumerousbenefitslikeinstantcommunicationandaccesstoinformation,itcanalsohavenegativeeffectsonmentalhealth.Thisliteraturereviewexaminestheimpactofsocialmediaonmentalhealth,focusingontherisksassociatedwithsocialmediause.Tothisend,areviewoftheexistingliteratureonsocialmediaandmentalhealthwasconducted.Thepaperconsidersthevariouswaysinwhichsocialmediausecanleadtomentalhealthissuessuchasanxiety,depression,andsocialisolation.Wealsoexploredhowsocialmediausecanexacerbateexistingmentalhealthproblems.Ourreviewalsodiscussesthepotentialwaystomitigatethenegativeeffectsofsocialmediaonmentalhealth,includingtheneedforpoliciesandguidelinestoregulatesocialmediause.Inconclusion,thefindingssuggestthatsocialmediausecanhaveadetrimentalimpactonmentalhealth,andtherefore,socialmediausersshouldbeawareoftherisksandtakestepstomitigatethem.Oneareawheresocialmediaiscapableofimpactingmentalhealthisthroughsocialcomparison.Socialmediaplatformsgiveuserstheabilitytocomparetheirliveswithothersthroughpostsandpictures.Thiscanleadtofeelingsofinadequacyandevendepression,particularlywhenusersfeelliketheyarenotachievingasmuchastheirsocialmediacontacts.
