Abstract:
Socialmediahasbecomeanintegralpartofourdailylives,withbillionsofusersworldwide.Whileitprovidesnumerousbenefitslikeinstantcommunicationandaccesstoinformation,itcanalsohavenegativeeffectsonmentalhealth.Thisliteraturereviewexaminestheimpactofsocialmediaonmentalhealth,focusingontherisksassociatedwithsocialmediause.Tothisend,areviewoftheexistingliteratureonsocialmediaandmentalhealthwasconducted.Thepaperconsidersthevariouswaysinwhichsocialmediausecanleadtomentalhealthissuessuchasanxiety,depression,andsocialisolation.Wealsoexploredhowsocialmediausecanexacerbateexistingmentalhealthproblems.Ourreviewalsodiscussesthepotentialwaystomitigatethenegativeeffectsofsocialmediaonmentalhealth,includingtheneedforpoliciesandguidelinestoregulatesocialmediause.Inconclusion,thefindingssuggestthatsocialmediausecanhaveadetrimentalimpactonmentalhealth,andtherefore,socialmediausersshouldbeawareoftherisksandtakestepstomitigatethem.Oneareawheresocialmediaiscapableofimpactingmentalhealthisthroughsocialcomparison.Socialmediaplatformsgiveuserstheabilitytocomparetheirliveswithothersthroughpostsandpictures.Thiscanleadtofeelingsofinadequacyandevendepression,particularlywhenusersfeelliketheyarenotachievingasmuchastheirsocialmediacontacts.
Anothersignificantriskassociatedwithsocialmediauseiscyberbullying.Cyberbullyingistheuseofelectroniccommunicationtobully,intimidateorharasssomeone.Socialmediaprovidesaplatformforbulliestoharassothersanonymously,andthiscanhaveseriousnegativeeffectsonthementalhealthofindividualswhoaresubjectedtoit.
Furthermore,socialmediausecanleadtoaddictionandcompulsivebehavior.Socialmediaplatformsaredesignedtobeengagingandaddictive,andusersmayfindthemselvesspendingmoreandmoretimeonthesesites,whichcanleadtoanxietyandothermentalhealthproblems.
However,socialmediaalsohasthepotentialtopromotementalhealthbyprovidingaccesstosupportgroupsandeducationalresources.Forexample,socialmediaplatformscanconnectindividualstomentalhealthsupportcommunities,whichcanprovidevaluableemotionalsupport.
Tomitigatetherisksassociatedwithsocialmediause,individualscantrytolimittheirsocialmediause,particularlybeforebedtime,andparticipateinotherleisureactivitiesthatpromotepositivementalhealth.Moreover,technologycompaniesandpolicymakersshoulddevelopguidelinesandregulationstoaddressthenegativeeffectsofsocialmediause.
Inconclusion,socialmediahasbecomeanintegralpartofmodernlife,andwhileitprovidesmanybenefits,italsoposessignificantriskstomentalhealth.Therefore,itisessentialtoraiseawarenessaroundthepotentialnegativeimpactsofsocialmediauseandtakestepstominimizetheserisks.Anotherwaysocialmediacanaffectmentalhealthisthroughthepressuretopresentaperfectself-image.Onsocialmedia,peopletendtoshowonlythe"highlightreel"oftheirlives,embellishingtheirachievementsoreditingtheirphotostolookflawless,whichcancreateunrealisticexpectationsandleadtoself-comparison.Thispressurecancauseanxiety,depression,andothermentalhealthproblems,particularlyinvulnerablepopulationssuchasteensandyoungadults.
Moreover,socialmediacancauseFOMO(fearofmissingout),whichcanalsohavenegativeeffectsonmentalhealth.Peoplemayfeelleftoutandisolatedfromsocialeventsandactivitiesthattheyseeonsocialmedia,leadingtofeelingsofinsecurityanddepression.
Thelackofprivacyonsocialmediaisalsoariskfactorformentalhealth.Peoplemayfeelvulnerabletocyberstalking,hacking,oridentitytheft,leadingtoanxietyandparanoia,whichcouldleadtonegativementalhealthoutcomes.
Ontheotherhand,socialmediacanalsopromotepositivementalhealthbyprovidingaplatformtoconnectwithothers,reducesocialisolation,andaccessonlinementalhealthservices.Socialmediacanalsoprovideachanneltoexpressoneself,seeksupport,andconnectwithotherswhosharesimilarinterestsandexperiences.

Socialmediacanalsobeaddictive,leadingtoexcessiveuseandneglectofotherimportantareasoflife,suchaswork,school,andrelationships.Thisaddictioncanleadtosocialmediaburnout,aconditioncharacterizedbyexhaustion,anxiety,stress,anddepression.Excessiveuseofsocialmediacanalsoleadtodisruptedsleeppatterns,resultinginfatigueandreducedproductivity.
Anothernegativeimpactofsocialmediaisthespreadoffalseinformation,leadingtomisconceptionsandanxiety.Socialmediaplatformsoftenhavealackoffact-checking,enablingthespreadofinaccurateinformation.Socialmediausersmayalsoencounteronlinescamsandfraud,causingfinancialstrainandanxiety.
Finally,socialmediacanalsoleadtoprivacyconcerns.Socialmediaplatformsmaygatheruserdataformarketingpurposes,whichcouldleadtoabreachofprivacy.Itmayresultinanxietyandmistrustofsocialmediaplatformsandcompanies.
