InvestigatorsfromBellLabsMurrayHill,NewJerseyhavefoundthatclaimsmadebysomescientistsatthelaboratorywerenotbasedonfact.Theinvestigatorsdismissedresultsfromanumberofstudiespublishedbetween1998and2023.BellLabsappointedacommitteetoinvestigatethewrongdoingafterotherscientistsraisedquestionsabouttheclaims.Someoftheclaimswereoncesaidtobemajordevelopmentsinthestudyofphysics.Theyincludedaclaimthatscientistshadcreatedthesmallestdevicetocarryelectriccurrentevermade.

Thecommitteeidentifiedatleastsixteenexamplesofscientificwrongdoing.ItplacedtheblameononeBellLabsphysicist,JanHendrikSchon.Mr.Schontoldthecommitteethathehadnowrittenrecordsofthelaboratoryexperiments.Healsosaidmuchoftheinformationinhiscomputerhadbeendestroyed.

TheinvestigatorsfoundthatMr.Schonusedinformationfromearlierworktosupporthisfindings.Theysaidhisdidthiswithouttheknowledgeoftheotherscientistsinvolvedintheexperiments.TheinvestigatorsnotedthatMr.Schonandhisgroupproducedanaverageofonescientificpapereveryeightdays.Formostscientists,afewpapersayearisconsideredproductive.

Afterthecommittee’sreportwasreleased,BellLabsimmediatelydismissedJanHendrikSchonfromhisposition.HewasoncethoughttobeafutureNobelPrizewinner.Afterhisdismissal,Mr.Schonadmittedhehadmademistakesinhisscientificwork.Hesaidheregrettedthosemistakes.
