Theirstudyof2,279girlsaged10to14showedthatwhilethevastmajorityhadhealthyweights,nearlyathirdfelttheywereoverweightandweretryingtolosepounds.Evenatthetenderageof10,nearly32percentofgirlsfelt“toofat”and31percentsaidtheyweretryingtodiet.

McVey,aresearcherattheHospitalforSickChildreninToronto,andhercolleaguesanalyzeddatacollectedinanumberofsurveysofsouthernOntarioschoolgirlsbetween1993and2022,reportingtheirfindingsinTuesday’sissueoftheCanadianMedicalAssociationJournal.

Nearly80percentofthegirlshadhealthybodyweightandonly7.2percentwereconsideredoverweightusingstandardweight-to-heightratios.Mostresearcherssuggesttherateofoverweightchildreninthiscountryisseveraltimeshigherthanthatfigure.

Nearly30percentofthegirlsreportedtheywerecurrentlytryingtoloseweight,thoughfewadmittedtodangerousbehaviorsuchasself-inducedvomiting.

Still,atestthatmeasuredattitudestowardseatingshowed10.5percentofsurveyparticipantswerealreadyatriskofdevelopinganeatingdisorder.

“We’renottalkingaboutkidswho’vebeenprescribedadietbecausethey’reaboveaverageweightoroverweight,We’retalkingaboutchildrenwhoarewithinahealthyweightrange.Andtheyhavetakenituponthemselvestodiettoloseweight,”McVeysaid,acknowledgingshefoundtheratesdisturbing.Shesaidstrikingabalancebetweenhealthyweightsandhealthyattitudestowardsfoodandbodyimageisacomplextask,withnoeasysolutions.
